B6543 Wrap Dress Sew Along Part 1: Fitting and Pattern Adjustments

It’s time for another sew along! Today we are starting on the classic wrap dress. I have chosen a pattern that uses a woven fabric for the wrap as I find these are a bit less common and just as elegant as their knit counterparts. I’ve made a few changes to the pattern for personal preference, but I think this is going to go the distance in my wardrobe this summer! As always, leave comments below.

Someone, somewhere said that one way to get rid of the pucker at the dart tip is to sew up to the dart tip, then instead of backstitching, do a 180 and sew back into the fabric of the dart tip. Did I learn that here? Apparently that will smush down that pucker. The bodice looks awesome on you. So beautiful. At first the camera angle felt like looking down and beneath the balcony a person was standing on. But, after you got into the pattern adjustment, I forgot all about it. All your videos are such fun and I learn so much. This is the home economics we never learned in school.
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 4 года назад
😂 sorry about the camera angle! I’m still getting that worked out. I promise to make it better for next time, though! Yes, I normally stitch to the point and then turn and sew back into the dart bulk for my darts. These darts were sewn hastily so I could just assess the fit. I won’t leave pointy darts on the final!

I've done an fba on all my patterns for years but it wasn't until I watched you go through this method on today's episode that I had my "ah hah" moment. I sew to get a custom fit for my figure. Off the rack tops made to fit my bust are almost always too short in length. I can see why this is as I watched you go through the steps to do a full-bust adjustment on this pattern. The garment manufacturers are missing a step. They do not finish adjusting their pattern to go over the full bust and down the length of the garment thereby creating a length that is as accommodating (even for petite's) as was the adjusted bust. I hope that makes sense! I can't thank you enough for this tutorial, Whitney. Now, that being said, I must agree with other viewers...zooming in so we could actually see you marking up the pattern would be helpful. You'll get it...practice, practice, practice on your video-taping skills. It'll will come!

What a great video! You were so fortunate to have a great mentor. I am self taught. I would have help here and there if I asked people. I find I am learning so much more now than I ever did. I never was taught to alter patterns. I always just made them the way they said and of course nothing fit correctly. If you can believe it, my daughter actually sent me a photo of a dress she likes the day before you said you were going to make this. It is the exact dress. I had a difficult time finding the pattern though. I got the last one Minerva had so it won’t be here for a few weeks.

Thank you so much this is so helpful! Yes Whitney I have a question... I am very petite ( 5ft.) and large busted and high waisted. so I need a shoulder adjustment to make them shorter majority of the time a bust adjustment and of course shortening the length and let’s not forget the sway back and square shoulders!😝. So my question is could you please direct me to your you tube videos on how shorten the shoulders and if you have a sway back adjustment as well. Thank you so mush again for your Hard Work 😓 !
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 4 года назад
When you say shorten the shoulders do you mean do a narrow shoulder adjustment or a petite adjustment? I do have a narrow shoulder adjustment (this brings the shoulder in from the arm) under tutorials in the playlist section of my channel. If you are needing to make the bodice shorter from the bust to the top of the shoulder (a petite adjustment), I don’t have a dedicated video on that (although I’ve talked about it quite a bit in the daily vlogs). I do plan, however on filming that adjustment separately so it can be easily accessed later on down the road. Unfortunately, I don’t have a sway back adjustment filmed. Let me know if you have issues finding any of those!

TomKat Stitchery I was thinking maybe the camera moved a little after you set it up? Because that black thing at the top of the frame looks like it might be part of the camera stand. But yes, it would be helpful to zoom in a bit. My sewing teacher has taped around an area on her work surface so she can see exactly what’s inside the frame while she’s working - that helps to zoom in as far as possible without losing any of the action in the shot! Hope that helps, Whitney!

Oh Whitney thank you for your petite adjustment videos! I am making better adjustments. I have never tackled a wrap dress (or bought one because they never fit...) I need to raise the depth of the V, I usually take an inch out of the upper bust for everything, Im 5"1. With this adjustment the V is still too low for a church going dress! Is there something I should know about raising a wrap dress neckline? Thanks so much!
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 2 года назад
Wrap dresses can be tricky with raising the neckline because the under lap has to go underneath the opposite breast. What I do to keep things modest, is sew a clear snap on the wrap. This keeps everything in place and helps it from getting too low cut!

Good info once again, and I’m excited about the woven wrap dress!! I was wondering if you ever have to make the back pattern piece narrower? (I don’t mean shorter as in a sway back, just narrower around the bra strap area?) The reason I ask is that when I choose a size based on my upper bust measurement, the back is usually still too wide - and I still have to do a small fba. I have fairly broad shoulders, but am narrower through the ribs - I wear a 34H or 32I bra - so my waist and underbust area end up swimming in fabric. My upper back is very flat, almost concave (!), and I have a slight sway back, but I have a fairly pronounced pot belly plus the boobs... I’m finding it very hard to fit for that combo! I think I may have to size down a bit more to get the fit in the back right and just do a larger fba to accommodate the larger bust and belly. Does that make sense? Or would I run into trouble with the shoulder or arm scye? 🤯
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 4 года назад
I actually have the opposite problem in that my back is wide in comparison to my shoulders and upper chest. However, I think it’s most important to pick a size that fits the upper back and chest and then adjust from there. If you have wider shoulders, that’s an easy adjustment to make. I would pick a smaller size based on your upper bust (and upper back) measurements. From there you could easily do an FBA, which would give you room in the boobs and subsequently room in the waist/belly. There is also a full tummy adjustment that might come in handy.

When making a muslin, do you have to use the same type of fabric as your final garment ?
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 2 года назад
It doesn't have to be the same, but it should be very similar. For instance, using muslin (toile or calico) fabric for a dress that has a lot of drape can be very misleading. I usually try and find something as close to the final fabric as possible.

I'm surprised that you cut up your original pattern and did not make a separate paper pattern. This is especially since you say you have differences in your body measurements due to health issues. Do you teach about making a separate working patterns? If so, sorry new to following your channel? Do you teach about changing up the sleeves fit the different body's? And do you have a video teaching how to take your body measurements to then adjust patterns to fit each person's body better? tia
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 4 года назад
Hi, Pam! I do cut up my commercial patterns. I honestly hate tracing them and only do it if I know I can’t easily get the pattern again. I’m pretty familiar now with the big 4 and how they fit my body so I have very few situations where I can’t go back and fix the pattern pattern if need be. I do have fluctuating body measurements due to some autoimmune issues, but depending on where I am with that issue, it’s usually my waist that will vary the most, which is easy to adjust (in other words my size rarely changes, just the waistline). As far as making a separate working pattern, it would just be a matter of tracing off your pattern before you start cutting! I do talk about measurements and picking sizes in other sew alongs, but I can talk more about that during this one!
@pamm2230

@@TomKatStitchery Thanks for your reply. Good to know how your body is compared to the different pattern companies. Learning how to adjust patterns is one of the best sewing skills I've learned to date. Having all the sizes printed on the same pattern helps in seeing the outline needed to process changes. TomKat Stitchery I learnt from Cashmerette that for larger busts, it’s better to stay a bit further away from the apex. Up to 2 inches is okay, according to Jenny. (At least I *think* it was 2”. Or was it 2cm?? 🤔 I’ll have to go rewatch the course now... 😂). But yeah, I do think they look a little too close to the apex. But I trust your experience regarding the final fabric. I love the fit of the toile other than that, though! Also, the info on the arm scye was very helpful. My sewing teacher is great, but I fear she does *not* understand fitting outsize busts. 😂

I'm a real novice with FBA. So, how did you know how much to add? You added 1.5 in. Is that added onto your known full bust measurement amount, or what? The dart point on your right, to me clearly looks about 1-2 inches lower than the dart point on the other side. Thx.
@billiev8705
@billiev8705 4 года назад
Anne in STX Harrison If I remember correctly, you add up your bust circumference + wearing ease and compare that to the final garment measurements. The difference is what you add in total, but because you’re normally working on a pattern piece that covers one half of the front, you divide that difference in half. So if you need 3” of extra bust room, you add 1 ½” in width to the front bodice piece. (The length slides out automatically.) I hope I explained this correctly, @tomkatstitchery !
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 4 года назад
Billie is correct. I picked the size 14 because it was for a bust of 36 and that’s my upper bust measurement. I decided how much of an FBA to do based on the finished bust measurement for my size. My full bust is 40 and you want at least 2” of ease at the bust. The finished bust measurement for the pattern was 39 and I wanted 42 so that’s how I came up with the 1 1/2” to add to each side! Does that make sense?

Great video! How did you decide on the initial bodice size (size 14) to then do an fba on? Did you use you high bust as the starting measurement? Thank you!

I should have talked about that! Sorry! Yes, I pick the size that has a bust measurement that matches my upper bust measurement and then I go from there!

Do you have a small bust adjustment video? I think I could attempt it watching your videos. You just get on with it!

I don’t, but I should do one! It’s really the same process, but in reverse. I can do an actual video on it, though!

Oh Whitney, I love you and your vlogs, but just couldn’t watch this one with the camera angle. Sorry xx

I know. I’m getting things fixed for next time. Sorry about that. I’m getting very frustrated with the film angles in my head not matching with the ones that are coming out of the camera! Rest assured, I am working on it and hope that it’s much better next time!
