"Sliding feet" has training purposes. It's one of a number of stepping methods in Bagua.
@Astaraa
@Astaraa 7 лет назад
+DasGroßeWerk Cool there you go! It's also used to train the muscles for "shoveling" so you can shovel into someone's legs. It also has Qigong application. Chicken step is even more odd looking but useful to train the legs.
@chadstratton4926
@chadstratton4926 5 лет назад
@@Astaraa If you are still here- is his upper body form (angle, tension, rotation) generally correct in this video? (There are no teachers in my area- I've only done Okinawa derivative, but the lower spine v neck torsion ideas, waist-thigh angles, arm-shoulder relationships seem compelling esp. In the context of the Circle training idea.)

People new to martial arts and especially to internal martial arts: Lineage is crucial !! Before studying with anyone, find out who taught them, then find out who taught that teacher. Do your homework, or you will be ripped off at the least and possibly injured at the worst. A lot of what you need to know to practice well on your own is taught one on one. Some of these masters can be expensive and you may have to travel a bit, but it will be worth it. There are several styles of Baguazhang and a little research will turn up their known masters. Also, very few people are masters of more than one style, it takes many years to learn one well. I'd be very skeptical of someone teaching 4,5 6 styles that are different from each other.
@Long_Wei
@Long_Wei 9 лет назад
i disagree. lineage matters not, only in the USA do teachers focus so much on *showing off* their lineages. what truly matters is internal skill. two teachers of the same lineage might have a completely different level of neigong...
@kungfuman82
@kungfuman82 9 лет назад
Lynwe Interesting way of putting it, "showing off" their lineages. I agree in a way, especially in the US. It seems that in the USA, the more "pure" your "lineage", the more you can charge for classes. However, do you agree that transmission is important when it comes to neigong skills, and therefore lineage would carry at least some weight in this instance?
@Long_Wei
@Long_Wei 9 лет назад
kungfuman82 I agree, it certainly does help to have a great teacher who can show you how things were practiced 500 years ago, a long way back in the lineage. This is the case of my master in China, but he never even talks about it, never calls himself lineage holder, although he is, in fact. however, most lineages' teachers are like the extremities of very small branches on a gigantic tree. they aren't unique "lineage holders". in China they never mention it, unless you ask. I chose my master because of his insane skill and his awesome and gentle personality! lol so, when I see people claiming to be lineage holders in the west, it automatically turns on my bullshit detector. most of the time, they have to compensate their lack of skill with fancy lineage talk. but in the end, they practice the exact same thing as people of other lineages.
@kungfuman82

Lynwe "so, when I see people claiming to be lineage holders in the west, it automatically turns on my bullshit detector. most of the time, they have to compensate their lack of skill with fancy lineage talk. but in the end, they practice the exact same thing as people of other lineages." That's so amazingly stated that I've transformed into a white girl and I can't even right now.
@Chunda8
@Chunda8 9 лет назад
Of course, but if I was interested in studying with someone, I'd want to know who their teacher(s) is/was. But, that shouldn't be the first thing they say. If I know of some great teacher x, it would be easy to check if someone said they were a student of x. It's also always a good strategy to observe a class before taking one from a new teacher.

Jake steps forth once again, in his own inimitable form and calls it Bagua :). I used to get annoyed at how far off mark he is to the internal arts, but now I actually like watching his vids when I need a good laugh. I also use them as a teaching aid showing how not to approach internal martial and nei gong training.

I studied Liu Ha Ba Gua Hsing-i with Grandmaster Way Lun Choi, who studied in Shanghai. I am old, and not the master my teacher was. I do understand much, and I want to share. Just about any Chi-gung prepares students physically for the martial activity that some hope to master. I want to compliment Jake for helping inspire others to get off their duffs and get healthy, for gosh sake, we can either build each other up and benefit the students and their communities or tear each other down to the point where not much gets done. Give the guy a break! By the way, perhaps I misunderstood GM Choi, but the point of it all isn't really fighting, but developing the WHOLE PERSON in order to help them have other options than just fighting, when appropriate. And, speaking from experience, Nei Jia, including what the southern Chinese call Ba Gua Chang san-so, is a potent defensive/offensive system, but only for people with self-discipline, good character, correct respect for the talent and accomplishments of others, the proper motivation and objectives, excellent coordination, and frankly, at least measurable intelligence. For others, there are other ways.

He still is a master... Been a while since you did that one week introductory course eh? Maybe you are so old that you forget where your "master" came from? Hong Kong I thought...Shanghai Liu He Ba Fa is usually referred to as the Orthodox form, as opposed to the Hong Kong form. And my god man, there is no such thing as "Liu Ha Ba Gua Hsing-i... Normally I just watch these for a joke, but you are dropping a real old fighters name as if ; 1. You know him, and 2. He would condone this travesty. You should apologize.

Tuck in your butt when walking, keep your hands in front of your chest, twist more into the circle using your waist, concave the chest. Don't lock your elbow, keep your feet closer to the ground when walking. More emphasis on your kou bu and Bai bu steps. Walk ALOT more correctly to harness the health and combat benefits of circle turning.

Is the back supposed to be so arched during the walk? Ive been doing zhan zhuang (pole meditation). Ive been told to pull my head (imagine pony tail) upward to stretch out the spine, relax lower back to tuck in tailbone, and hence remove that arch. When i do arch and have my butt out a bit, my root is lost at the hip. I test it by having friend push my chest. Im just assuming the principle should be the same for bagua circle walking which it might not be. Im new to bagua so i wanted to ask.

Ok, Jake! Well the walk, there are three types of steps in Ba gua! These are kinda well some what overall understood, snake step - feet flat on ground, lion step - like one is normally walking, chicken step - raise the knee high to chest and stride out, to mud walk one always pushes into the lead for like slide in all cases. It is not a one type is best but all are to be practiced and taught in a school of Ba gua.

You are missing the single most important fundamental principle of Internal Chinese Martial Arts (Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Ba Gua Zhang, etc.) and that is to keep the spine straight by tilting the pelvis slightly forward and lifting the head up with the chin tucked in; like being held up by a piece of string. This facilitates the correct Qi flow of Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) and Du Mai (Governing Vessel) while the tongue gently presses against the roof of the mouth. You have your arse hanging out dude

This video waters down and makes light of Ba Gua. Ba Gua is a Taoist tradition. And it is not a meditation in the Taoist sense. From an American point of view meditation is seen as anything from contemplation, visualization, to a deep practice that brings one closer to their true nature. Ba Gua is not a type of meditation in the Taoist sense. In Taoism meditation is a technique to open the internal energy blockages in the 8 bodies, including chi, emotion, mind, psychic level and so on. Ba Gua is certainly an amazing art but in itself it is not meditation. To learn the energy movement aspect, one should start with chi gung, nei gung and tai chi. Ba Gua is an advanced Taoist practice. It is not simply a physical movement accompanied by focus. When introducing ba gua the person in the video should say he is only doing the physical movements and that is merely a first stage among dozens in practicing ba gua.

That said the reason one practices the mudd walking and the snake step it is for throwing in a real fight. That is when fighting someone the throw needs to be grounded, some of the schools of Ba gua will have teaching is parallels Shuai Jow practice in throwing and in training. A long with this there are three basins which is the height of the stance Lower, Middle, Upper. Lower would have the person close to the ground as in lower than knee the waist would set,
@pranakhan

This is beginner stepping, but the foundational elements seem over-simplified. Natural stepping focuses on having the knees almost brush together, forcing the thigh and core to evenly distribute weight between the legs. Since you're walking in reverse of Pre-Heaven, Yang stepping, your vision should be focused on the hollow pt. between the thumb & forefinger.. The Mud Wade stepping, traditionally, has a sliding foot. Fight on loose gravel or a sandy floor & you'll understand its purpose.

Mud wading isn't just a parlor trick. It's like the bagua equivalent to the horse stance in shaolin. No shit you wouldn't use it in actual combat. That doesn't change the fact that it is a crucial fundamental practice to maintain correct form and build a strong foundation in bagua

Pretty cool, I like the hand work. I don't look at this from the perspective of a fighter but as an artist, and there is a beauty to it. One of the greatest modern warriors once said "PFW/PFD", which I honestly believe wins fights has little to do with this beauty.

"you would never fight with sliding feet" - tell that to the Japanese styles of martial arts.

If I had never seen Bagua before this I would think its real but the basis of Bagua is circle walking. You slide your feet for a reason. It's for balance and planting. I've been an active martial artist since I was 2 years old. Don't practice this stepping. It's wrong. And honestly it's disrespectful. Have you ever even trained Bagua or did you just look at a few clips on the web? Absolutely ridiculous

This would be so more believable if you didn't say you have been an active martial artist since 2 years old.

imnotyourSAAN I agree with you. Out of all the internal systems Baqua is complex. and guess what the older you get, it's harder. Baqua must be practiced everyday and you need s good master or high level practitioner to correct you! Just an understanding of the terminology and history doesnt quality one to teach. I haven't seen many real Baqua teachers here. Usually American teachers are not very high level though some.may have beneficial knowledge. I'm practicing Baqua and even showed parts of the form to beginners with permission from my shifu. But Everytime I feel like I'm improving, I see people on way higher levels, sometimes frustration sets in but I keep practicing though I'm injured, which flares up a lot. However a strong Tai chi background will prepare one for Baqua. I would advise Mr. Mace not to make videos in things that he wasn't taught. Though I can't attack Mr. Mace in all his arts because he actually looks very good in some of his forms and movements. We should never be arrogant and be humble. These Chinese arts came from China and most of the greatest masters are from China!

I also thought the mud stepping sliding was ridiculous, until I saw a Wu style Bagua Grandmaster explaining how to slide in to the attacker's side and deflect a punch and striking the attacker in the face with a spear hand at the same time. Sifu Jake I am speaking of Dragon Gate Sanctuary Wu Grandmaster Lao Xie Matsuo.
