When Badfinger was trending, there was a lot of talk about them actually being the Beatles playing under a different name. The fact that Badfinger was on Apple Records only added fuel to the fire. This was a great band selling around 14 million albums. The Beatles loved this band and did what they could to promote them. An original vinyl of their album Straight Up in good condition will still cost about $300.00. I loved this band.

Fun facts: Badfinger originally recorded the song" Without You", written by group members Pete Ham and Tom Evans; although Nilsson has the most famous version. This group was formed in 1961, originally called The Iveys and signed with The Beatles' Apple Records in 1968. The next year they changed their name to Badfinger. This group was discovered by Beatles "roadie" Mal Evans. The groups "Beatles-esque" sound is because Paul McCartney and George Harrison and produced two of their biggest hits "Come And Get It", also written by McCartney, and "Day After Day", respectively. George also plays slide guitar on the latter.

@@quinn-tessential3232 That is correct. Pete Ham wrote "Day After Day". He and Harrison both played slide guitar on the song, while legendary pianist Leon Russell tickled the ivories. Harrison produced the song but left the recording unfinished; Harrison basically abandoned Badfinger in midstream while they were recording *Straight Up* (the 1971 album on which "Baby Blue" and "Day After Day" appear) in order to pursue his Concert for Bangladesh project. (Badfinger backed up Harrison in that famous concert, as they had done on Harrison's *All Things Must Pass* album, and Ham duetted with Harrison on an acoustic guitar version of "Here Comes the Sun" in the concert.) Since Harrison was too busy trying to get the film and soundtrack album for the Concert for Bangladesh together to finish producing *Straight Up*, Todd Rundgren came in and finished producing the album (and Todd claims to have tweaked "Day After Day" in the process).

Yes, they did sound a lot like The Beatles. Two other Beatles connections are that Paul McCartney wrote and produced their 1st big hit, "Come and Get It", and George Harrison produced and played guitar on the song that I recommend for your next Badfinger song, "Day After Day". Other trivia: Badfinger wrote and did the original version of "Without You", a song that you know from Nilsson's version. It's on the same album as "No Matter What", which I would be glad to see appear on this channel. If you want to hear another Beatlesque power pop song by a band similar to Badfinger, try "Go All the Way" by The Raspberries.

We're room mates in college and now live within a half-hour of each other. Of the two, I guess I would be the Andy..though I can't play a note. I majored in broadcast production and had my own shows. And I got to program new music and run the record (Nirvana!!) Library! When my friend had a real to real tape recorder, he would play "the first note game" with me. Have a song cued up on the recorder, turn it on and off and I would have to guess. I was right about 70% of the time. Ha!

@LaStarza61
@LaStarza61 Год назад
I don't think it's really accurate to say that Paul McCartney "had a large influence on the band's direction." Paul wrote one song for them to record and co-produced just one of their albums. Beyond that, he didn't really influence the direction the band would take its music. The comparisons of Badfinger to The Beatles gets kind of out-of-hand sometimes. A lot of bands have obviously been influenced by The Beatles to varying degrees... but, if Badfinger had been signed by a different label, I highly doubt that they would have been constantly compared to The Beatles. Just my opinion.

George Harrison, who also produced part of the *Straight Up* album on which "Baby Blue" appears (and who, notably, played the slide guitar on "Day After Day"), is arguably the Beatle who had the biggest influence on Badfinger. And, not to be outdone, John Lennon is the one who came up with the band's name. He had injured his right index finger at the time that he and McCartney were composing "With a Little Help from My Friends", forcing him to plunk out the verse melody using only his right middle finger, so he and McCartney originally called the song "Bad Finger Boogie". They later gave the name to their proteges, because the band's former name, the Iveys, sounded outdated and was too close to the name of another popular British group called the Ivy League (who are best known today as the backing vocalists on the early Who single "I Can't Explain").

George Harison produced so yes they have a Beatles sound but they were fabulous writers, musicians on their own. Day after Day should be next. Breaking Badfinger. When I heard those first guitar notes on the show I said "Badfinger!" it was the first time I'd heard it since I was a kid in the 70's, talk about a nostalgic rush. The way that riff walks up and down, and the tone, unmistakable.

Love this group. Badfinger were a Welsh rock band from the 60's-80's. They became the first group signed by the Beatles' Apple label. Come & Get It" was written & produced by Paul McCartney & "Day After Day" was produced by George Harrison. They had other hits such as "No Matter What", "Baby Blue" & "Without You" (written by Harry Nilsson). This group had quite a sad history. The band had bad mismanagement & lost most of their money, two members committed suicide & one died of a brain aneurysm.
@LaStarza61
@LaStarza61 Год назад
That's not really accurate. Paul McCartney wrote "Come and Get It" and gave it to Badfinger to record. But that's it... Neither Paul or George (or John or Ringo for that matter) wrote any other songs for them and they never recorded a Beatles song. And Paul McCartney and George Harrison co-produced exactly one album each... that's it. Give the band some credit... There were some great songwriters in the band... especially Pete Ham and Tom Evans. Joey Molland wrote some good songs too. Badfinger was an extremely talented guitar-driven band!
@RockinAllDay
@RockinAllDay Год назад
Finally! Watied a while for some Badfinger reactions! Great song! I would like to set the record straight about some wrong info spread by people here: there is NO "lead singer" in the group. All 4 members contributed material. Basically, if 1 member wrote a song, they were the ones to sing lead vocals on it. The only exceptional cases were on some of the drummer's (Mike Gibbins's) songs. Also, this song was written by guitarist Pete Ham, who was (usually) their lead guitarist and principal songwriter along with the other guitarist, Joey Molland. Two of the band members, Ham and the bassist Tom Evans wrote the song "Without You". The Beatles didn't have much to do with Badfinger's music except for Paul writing a song for them ("Come and Get It") and George co-producing and playing guitar on their "Straight Up" album, on which "Baby Blue" is the 2nd track.

The Beatles weren't super involved with them. Paul wrote their first single and George produced part of one of their albums but they wrote their own material . They are the beginning of power pop. I think they sound like them because they have the beautiful harmonies and super catchy melodies.

For me, they only sound like the Beatles when Tom and Joey are singing. Think about those Liverpool accents.. Pete is in his own league and the driving force of the band and I must say an excellent guitarist and singer. Mike always gets left out. His drumming is awesome, consistent and always plays the song! and don’t forget he could write too!

This is one of my top 10 favorite songs of all time, thanks for the reaction guys. Stan Polley, their manager robbed them blind, which led to Pete Ham's and Tom Evans' suicide, Ham even mentioned Polley in his suicide note. Even though their songs were big hits, and always got heavy radio play, they barely had two nickels to rub together. I love Badfinger, and I certainly hope Stan Polley is burning in hell right now for what he did to those guys. 😠

Some very tragic back story with this band, there last album is a hidden rock gem, they're best album I think, its spectacular. Wish You Were Here is what it's called and the production is their best ever. A little history on the band they were on the apple label which the Beatles created and Paul McCartney wrote their first top ten hit (Come And Get It) and there debut album was a soundtrack to a film Magic Christian which Ringo Star played a main role in. Unfortunately one of there managers, Stan Polley robbed them dry and even after they had multiple songs topping the charts they still all lived in one house. Peter (the main singer and songwriter) committed suicide not long after his wife got pregnant in 1974 and hung him self in his garage which was devastating, peter tried calling Stan Polley endless times but he never answered and Peter just wanted to know why his money wasn't coming in because he just got a lease on the house and couldnt pay for it. After Stan Polley found out about Peters suicide, just to show how terrrible and disgusting he is, wanted to get Peters life insurance. And Tom (the bassist and Peter's best friend) committed suicide 8 years after and hung himself on a tree in his yard and his daughter found him. Absolutely tragic, one of rock and rolls history saddest stories truly.
