I think this song is better live than on the album. Plus Brian's guitar solo ROCKS!!

Queen is perfect on stage. Their collaboration and chemistry is amazing. 1982 - No auto-tune... it didn't exist then. It was a natural live performance - just pure talent. Brian's guitar "Red Special" was made with the help of his father from wood and other things found at home when Brian was a teenager. He plays it with an old silver sixpence. John Deacon designed the "Deaky Amp" which gives the Red Special a wide range of unique sounds it can produce. Thank You!

Love me a John Deacon song! So did Freddie, it's so bouncy. & yeah, even tho rumor has it that the lyrics are John dissing Brian (!), Brian insisted on a guitar solo and created an awesome one.

Glad you were in the groove on this one! Agree on the behind the scene tension (comments below) btwn John & Brian on the disco funk sound John & Freddie liked. Ever the peacemaker, Freddie penned SOUL BROTHER for Brian. You know enough Queen songs now so the references will click.

I love this album and this tour, they were on fire at the time. This rendition of the song is pretty much close to the album track itself. I really feel the Hot Space album is very underrated. Great reaction, that guitar is sublime. Such a great funky track.

WOWWWWW!😻 Suggestions from this same Milton Keynes Bowl concert: “Fat Bottomed Girls” “Somebody To Love” “Staying Power” “Action This Day” “Play The Game” “Save Me” AND The concert”s INTRO “The Hero” with “We Will Rock You” Fast Version” played altogether THERE’S ALSO a really cool segment where Fred sits down at the front of the stage and gives the audience lessons in “how to sing like Aretha Franklin”!

Not my favorite Queen song but it has grown on me over the years. John wrote this one so it is kind of a funk number. I like the live version better than the official version. Very bass forward song though Brian does kick it up with his guitar solos as well.

This live version is far much better than the recorded one. John wrote it to the Hot Space album, but the band's rock fans didn't like the album very much. 😁 Pls, check out the Flick Of The Wrist at Rainbow 74.

I still have a soft spot for the studio video - specifically for the exchanged look of complete admiration from John towards Freddie. Plus Freddie's dance moves in the video are very "disco days" and a fun look back.

John, who wrote this song, was heavily into disco, R&B, and funk music. Freddie enjoyed all types of music including disco, R&B, and funk but both Roger and Brian hated disco and funk. "Back Chat" is definitely a funk-influenced song. It was from the "Hot Space" album which marked a notable shift in direction from Queen's earlier work. They employed many elements of disco, funk, rhythm and blues, and dance and pop music on the album. The album was so different that Queen fans did not take to the new sound. This made the album the least popular Queen album to the fans who preferred the traditional rock style they had come to associate with the band. The truth is that neither Brian nor Roger liked most of the songs on the album and did not perform on many of the tracks. On the recording of "Back Chat", John actually played almost all of the instruments including the LM-Drum machine, keyboard, electric guitar, and bass guitar. Roger did play his drums in a small section (he hated the song) and Brian only appears on the track very briefly during the guitar solo (he, too, did not like the song). Freddie sang not only the lead but all of the backups (neither Roger nor Brian sang on it). The title of the song, “Back Chat,” is an English idiom referring to “impertinent or impudent replies, especially to a superior.” Queen performed the song live only during the Hot Space Tour. The song was played at a faster tempo, live giving it a more rock-oriented arrangement

Hey good reactions. There are still performances from this show I believe are must watch... Somebody to Love Fat Bottom Girls Play The Game All Must Watches in my opinion Queen in their live show prime in 1982.

A little tidbit....John wrote this about Brian due to Brian being argumentative and like the song says, always get the last word in!! I just wonder when Brian found out it was written around him and he then had to play his own being dissed at song!!! 🤔😅😅

Back Chat - To reply in a sarcastic or derogatory manner to someone in authority!! Hint: Brian & Roger were against taking their music into a funk disco vibe! This is John’s response 😂
@sharonallforloveandpositiv5497
Yes, I heard it was about Brian due to his arguing back and how he alway had to get the last word!!! But, the fact Brian and Roger did not like disco funk...would have dumped Another One Bites the Dust had they gotten their way...! So just goes to show that just because that music is not their thing, it makes it rubbish? Look now how famous and anthemic ABTD has become!!! Same as Your my best Freind, written by John again. Roger argued that he was not going to sing the lyrics "Still come back to you (still come back to you) In rain or shine, you've stood by me girl I'm happy at home (happy at home) You're my best friend... " Roger refused to sing I'm happy at home, citing they were an f'ing rock n roll band!! 🤔😅😅😅😅 Besides the point that pop etc was not a fave genre of Roger's too, he did actually write and sing Fun it...
