In this episode, we cross the border into Croatia, and rides backroads (for the most part) south. We ride through the Velebit National Park, and through mountains with wild horses.
As a Croat, living in Istra - Poreč, it is amazing when hearing that foreigner is so happy with my country and praises her so much. Roads are more rocky because they are probably build during ruling of Maria Theresa and her son, so 300 years old roads (she invested a lot in Croatia during her reign), altough there is possibility that some roads are from Roman times (so lot lot older). Interesting thing is that there are stil remenants of Homeland War in Croatia on Velebit, so there are still places that aren't cleared of mines (5.4km2 to be correct) but there is no harm for people walking, hiking, riding or mountaineering as there are signs of danger and so on. I read a story couple of years ago about a guy that's living on Velebit that has a lot of horses (50-60) and they are free to rule that mountain and he just feeds them and brings them water so it could be that those horses are his, altough there is possibility that they are also remenants of war because during winters in 1991-1995, Croatian soldiers were on positions on Velebit (unfortunately a lot of them lost their lives there), and You just saw what kind of big and powerfull mountain that is, and during winters it was only possible to go up there with mules, horses or helicopters. So I also read a story that when war ended in 1995, people couldn't take care of those horses so they just released them into the wild to be free so those horses could be descendants of those.... Such a shame that You didn't visit more of coast in Istra, you would have wonderfull time seing old towns, beautifull roads because Istra is just full of history, so be sure next time to visit us here :) Again, thank You for beautifull video, greetings from Croatia from a fellow biker and can't wait for part 4!!!!! :)
