Balloons in the Clouds Epoxy Resin Cube Paperweight | Ivory Soap Microwave Technique | DIY

Putting Ivory soap in the microwave is a great little science experiment, which results in a mass of fluffy white soap clouds that are great for casting in epoxy resin.
This technique will only work with Ivory soap, which is specially formulated to contain millions of tiny air bubbles that expand rapidly when heated in a microwave to produce the effect.
I will call this an intermediate level tutorial, which requires some basic polymer clay modelling, silicone mould making, and multiple resin pours.

resinAce I love watching your videos and that’s what made me to “play” with resin!! But I need to ask a question. I’ve tried to make a Puerto Rican mold out of silicon, and it doesn’t look right. My question is, can you make me one? I will pay you. 4 inches wide..2 1/2 inches length 🇵🇷. Please help me PLEASE! Thank you so much.

I like the idea, but I would have done it with the balloons on the bottom at different heights and with a small gradient with the blue resin before I added the cloud - upside down from how I wanted it, of course - and then top it off with either a very light blue, or a clear resin.

Wow, I love this video! You used so many different techniques. Someday, I would like to make several different types of clouds. I’ve heard of Ivory soap, I’ve also heard of using cotton balls, and of air dry clay. I need to make more time to experiment! The idea of using the sticky tack to hold the balloons up was wonderful. I’ve been really wanting to make a piece with a boy holding a kite (my five-year-old has always been obsessed with kite flying) and I think I might try using the sticky tack to hold the kite up. What is the ivory soap? And what it's made?
@resinAce
@resinAce 5 лет назад
Ivory soap is a specific brand of soap which is formulated to contain millions of tiny air bubbles (this actually makes the soap float in water). When you microwave it, the moisture vaporises and the air bubbles expand to six times their original size. The resulting 'cloud' of soap is actually very dry, which is why is works well with the resin.

How do you get your resin sooooo clear without using a pressure pot while it cures?
@resinAce
@resinAce 5 лет назад
Stir slowly with a thin mixing stick (I use bamboo skewers cut in half) and keep the mixing stick in contact with the base of the mixing cup. This will help to prevent bubbles being introduced to begin with. Let the resin sit for 5 minutes, as it heats up it will get more fluid (lower viscosity) and any bubbles in the resin should rise to the surface. If they don't, try standing the resin in water from the hot tap (about 60C) for a few minutes, and that should help. Just be aware that warming up the resin like this reduces the pot life (working time), and some resins that are designed to cure slowly (such as Alumilite Amazing Clear Cast) can cure instantly in the mixing cup if they are heated up too much.
