Welcome to my build series of the Balsa USA Stingray RC plane kit. The Stingray 120 is a great trainer and sport rc plane with an 83-inch wingspan and powered by a DLE-20 RC gas rc plane engine. I will be using a Futaba transmitter system with with Futaba servos and receiver. This plane is designed for .80 to .90 2-stroke glow engines, .90 to 1.20 4-stroke glow engines, and 15cc to 30cc gas engines.
In this video I start construction of the wing which begins with the left wing panel where I lay down the trailing edge, main spars, ribs and part of the leading edge.
All of these videos will be placed on a playlist.
I have been building, flying, crashing, modifying, and repairing radio control planes (RC Planes) for many years and enjoy sharing what I do with the radio control plane community, so I started RC Plane Tech channel for fun. I am not an expert, there are many different techniques when building radio control planes. A good way to learn about flying and building rc planes is to see what others are doing, that's what I do and that's why I like to share what I do.
Thanks for watching my channel. Hopefully you will find my videos a little interesting and perhaps fun to watch.

Great! Good luck with your scratch build. I have been gathering what I need to do a scratch build for my next project. Thanks

I think the shims that were put under the bottom spar should have gone under the rear piece. I know as I made the opposite mistake on a different kit that I built. Love your videos.

Thanks. Ya Im not sure why the want to place them under the spar because the spars actually extend beyond the ribs and have to be sanded down. Usually they have you do that if the spar sits up past the rib.. so you may be right that they should be at the trailing edge or not used . I certainly don’t like the way this wing is instructed to build. Im not happy with it. Thanks for the comment.

Well done. I really enjoy plane building. It gives me great ideas when I build. I use a sheet metal board epoxied to a flat wafer board to build. In addition to regular square magnets, I built several magnetic hold down clamps and 90 degree supports. It gives me that “third” hand you were looking for. Keep up the good work.

Thanks, I have been considering the magnetic set up. I may be tricking that in the future. I know there is also people who use plywood “squares” attached to the magnets for alignment and such. It looks great

For me the wing, at least putting the ribs on the spar, was the part of my first build, the Smoothie you showed me how to build. If I ran into that, the first part of the build I don’t know what I would do, probably call BUSA like you did. Building straight is hard enough without that challenge. It seems as though the spar is undersize, maybe dried out? This seems more likely than the ribs cut oversize.

Thanks, I appreciate your comments regarding the Smoothie build. Ya I got a reply from them today. I post a screenshot in the community post. They said they intentionally oversized the ribs to accommodate different types of spar woods??? That doesn’t make any sense to me. I didn’t realize how bad they were until after I started glueing, I probably should’ve stopped. But I was able to get it built. So Im just gonna move on. I like BUSA, but got a little disappointed with this.

Awesome another build video in this series. I use sheetrock on top of my build bench but have t tried foam. Maybe on the next build I'll try it. By the way i saw you using those 1-2-3 blocks in previvious videos so i got them too. I love those blocks. I keep buying them periodically, seems you cant have too many!😂 oh once I started using cling wrap instead of wax paper I never went back

Thanks again, I have never tried sheetrock, interesting. And the blocks are great, you are right, the more the merrier. They make make great weights also.

I've had my Stingray built for a couple of years now, but only the wing covered (Oratex) so far. I have a DLE-30 mounted on it. Too many projects. Looking forward to your build.

Thanks! And good luck finishing your build. It looks it will be a nice flying plane.

Hopefully they send you a new wing. Even though you started it, that’s expected. You would not have seen this until you started building. I don’t think asking for a new wing is out of line nor do I think BUSA would think it was either. Something is obviously out of spect, the ribs or the spar.

Ya, no real response from them thus far. I don’t expect anything at this point. Oh well.

Bonjour, le longeron aurait il pu etre mal usiné ? J ai acheté des baguettes de balsa 5x5 en paquet de 10 et certaines font moins ou plus de 5mm. C est gênant quand ça arrive. 😔 merci pour la vidéo

Hi, yes i think the spar was the wrong size or they over cut the notches in the ribs.

You didn’t center the 1/4” leading edge strip on the wing ribs. Doesn’t the leading edge sheeting need to but up against it on the top and bottom?
@JamesRCPlaneTech
@JamesRCPlaneTech 8 месяцев назад
Ya, good eye, I should have addressed that, Ill try to remember on the next vid. They didn’t shape the other half of that leading edge piece. They only angled on side of it. I think they just didn’t run it through whatever tool they use to cut parts on the one side, so it’s wider than the tip of the rib. I’ll have to trim it when the time comes. i triple checked to make sure I had the right piece, and was thinking maybe they were the ailerons, but I located the ailerons pieces, so these were the only pieces that matched. I have found a few issues with this kit so far and it’s early in the build. Shockingly I noticed that they completely omitted the instruction steps for the aileron wing mount construction or anything on the ailerons at all! I have an email into BUSA to see if they have an explanation or if they have a supplemental instruction sheet. Hopefully they get back to me. Also there are some pretty significant gaps between the ribs and spar joints, I have had to apply thick CA several times to fill them. The Smoothie had issues also, but I was able to work through them. This kit has me worried. This is clearly an older plane kit because the plans are hand drawn, but the manual looks newly updated, so maybe they just made a mistake in the printing…

Looks like they just threw in some 1/4 stock they had for the leading edge strips. Seeing as it will have to be shaped, it doesn’t make sense to angle the edges. Also, being that this is a laser cut kit, there shouldn’t be that much gap between the main spars and the rib saddles. Makes me wonder about my Smoothie XL kit I have to build…🤔 Good luck with the build!

Ya, Im not have the best feeling about this kit like I had with the Smoothie. The Smoothie had a few quirks but not that bad. This one seems like they have less quality control on it. I think I’ll post a few pictures on the community tab. The spars are also a little tweaked and since the rib joints are too big, the spar isn’t completely straight because its not held snuggly. I tried pushing it all back to the trailing edge, but its hard to bend/shape basswood. I completed the right wing off camera, and they came out fine in the end , but not as nice as the Smoothie or other builds.
