Up next, an interview with one of the most prolific songwriters in history… JD Souther...He co-wrote many hits for the biggest-selling American band ever, the Eagles. Today he tells the first-hand account of the Eagles' #1 hit sung by Glenn Frey and Don Henley that was a full-on brawl. The 1980 classic, Heartache Tonight. Coming from the multi-million-selling 1976 classic Hotel California, this hit was Written and recorded when the band was at each other’s throats and about to break up…this song came out of a jam session with Glenn Frey and JD Souther but they couldn’t nail down the chorus so later Glenn called a famous buddy, Bob Seger and he sang the song over the phone…amazingly the Seger sang back exactly what they needed to finish it. It became the band’s last #1 hit from their album The Long Run… Also, the story of the fight that ended the band between Glen and Don Felder Get the story straight from the legend next on Professor of Rock.

I’ve been waiting a long time to interview today’s artist. I’ve admired his career for many years. He has written so many modern-day standards and he’s a helluva singer in his own right. He is likely most famous for co-writing some of the biggest hits for America’s biggest-selling band ever… Eagles. I’m talking about Songwriter Hall of Famer J.D. Souther.
In fact, the combined writing & vocal talent of my guest has helped to sell more than 120 million albums around the world. He’s been nominated multiple times for a Grammy, CMA and ACM awards and is the recipient of the prestigious ASCAP Golden Note Award. He’s also a very fine actor. With a role in the movie Postcards from the Edge- starring Meryl Streep. He also appeared in Thirtysomething, and most recently, a recurring role on the series Nashville.
He’s co-written some of the Eagles' most beloved songs including the number one hits Best of My Love, New Kid in Town, as well as James Dean, Doolin Dalton, How Long, and then he’s written some great ones for and with others including Her Town Too with James Taylor, the Heart of the Matter by Don Henley as well as his own solo #1 hit You’re Only Lonely and then there’s todays #1 hit… Heartache tonight! You’ll love this story it’s a perfect fit for our revelations where artists go deep on their greats songs and albums. So today we head back to the end of the 70s.
Eagles had just dominated radio for most of the decade and were coming off one of the biggest-selling albums and title tracks ever with Hotel California. They were so big some were calling them the American Beatles. but the band was starting to come apart at the seams. Tempers were flaring and members were leaving or getting ousted… Bernie Leadon was gone much earlier in 1975 and then Randy Meisner was gone by the time they started up sessions for The Long Run.

I think what made the Eagles so special was just how many mazing singers they had in the band. Frey, Henely, Schmit, Meisner, Leadon, Walsh, and Felder. All could sing and when they harmonized it was amazing. No other band has ever had that much talent at the lead vocal slot. They had a singer for every style of music.

I was 11 in '79 - I use to turn the radio on at night when I went to bed and fall asleep listening to all of the songs of that time. I can't say I was a big Eagles fan but the songs off The Long Run album were definitely in the air, everywhere. Disco had pretty much seen it's day, the 80s were coming, my life was changing, there was a kind of electricity in the air... so much to look forward as well as big changes that had me a little nervous. The world has changed so much since then - I feel fortunate to have lived those years... and I feel fortunate to be here now... so many of my friends have passed on already. We get the days we get - enjoy them as much as you can and be kind when you can - and enjoy the music while you're here.

Souther is one of the most under-appreciated and unknown songwriting giants. Fanatics like you, and fans of this channel know him. But if you asked the average person on the street they just say, "Who?" I never understood why he didn't ever become a household name as a vocalist, but I'm glad you mentioned the duet with James Taylor. I thought that might put him more squarely on the map, but even though people loved the song they mostly sort of skipped over his part in it. He was big buddies with Warren Zevon, too.

*Henley & Frey never forgave Felder for writing their most popular song.* Their egos simply couldn't stand it. When Felder rejected their politics as well - that was the end. And sadly, thanks to Henley's obsessive blocking of all Eagles content online, they will be all but forgotten in another 10 years. Even the _Blockmeister Extraordinaire,_ Robert Fripp of King Crimson, has finally realized this, and appears to have stopped chasing Crimson music off of RU-vid and other such places. Solid episode, as always, Professor. I am a music trivia junkie like you, so I know a lot of this stuff, but thanks to your great research and interviews, I almost always learn something new.

I believe that is happening now the Eagles being forgotten. With the exception of Hotel California their most played song by far the band is slowly falling off the airwaves K-Earth in Los Angeles is the only station that plays other songs. Since Henley refuses to let music streaming services or movies to use his music the youth today have almost no knowledge or interest in the Eagles today. I still like the majority of their stuff including Frey and Henely's solo music my daughter's and the kids I work come off with indifference. Really it's kinda sad the Eagle's could still be top tier but Henely's ego just won't let that be.

@@ProfessorofRock - That's a very difficult question to answer. I'm tempted to say it's every song on their greatest hits 71-75 album. Every song on that album is #1 in my heart. However, if had to pick one song, it would be a three way tie. I just can't choose one over the others. If I'm driving, it's definitely "Take it Easy." If I'm in a romantic mood it's "Best of my Love." If I'm in a spiritual mood it's "Peaceful, Easy Feeling." It has a spiritual quality to it. @@ProfessorofRock Every person that left had left due to Glen Frey. Randy Meisner, Bernie Leadon then the two gods foolishly fired Don Felder. Glen Frey threw his usual temper tantrum if someone did something he didn't like. I agree with Felder if they were going to do a benefit they should have done it for St. Judges or for animals. Not politics. Because Felder said I guess Frey threw a temper tantrum. This guy they have to replace Felder in no way can match up to Felder. Timothy B. Schmidt is a good singer. But he can not match up to Randy Meisner. That's why they could never sing Take It To The Limit not until Vince Gill came in. Only Randy can sing that song ( his song) like it should be sung. Shame on this group ( whoever they are) for not retiring that song. They treated Randy horrible. After him and Glen got into it Felder and Walsh totally left Randy out to dry. They refused to talk to him and hang out with him. I don't blame Randy for quitting. They no way are as good as they were after Meisner, Felder, Leadon left. They refused to let Randy do the documentary. Maybe that's because of the garbage they said about Randy. Saying he refused to sing his song because he was out drinking Vodka with a couple of girls in a motel room. Knowing Randy's kids would maybe be watching that documentary. How pathetic for the two gods to say that garbage. I quit listening after Randy left.

The Eagles were part of the soundtrack of my high school years in the late 70s. I started playing guitar in 1973 and by the time the Eagles released their "greatest hits" album (71-75) I went down to the music store downtown and bought the SONGBOOK for that album and enjoyed playing and singing those songs on guitar. From that collection I think I enjoyed playing "Best of My Love" and "Desperado" the most. "Desperado" was harder to sing and play, plus it had one weird dissonant chord in it, as I recall. I don't think the songbook represented that chord accurately and I wasn't experienced on guitar enough to figure out what it was supposed to be. I have two university degrees in music now! LOL! Knowing music theory, as I do now, helps immensely! I don't know where my Eagles songbook is now. It may be on a shelf somewhere. I remember I wore it out!

I've always loved the Eagles ever since I heard Hotel California as a young kid. I picked up the Long Run album and I immediately fell in love with the song "Those Shoes" and "I Can't Tell You Why". I go back to them on a regular basis and usually hit repeat a few times. Great band.

So great hearing THE story from someone that was in the room. There are a small handful of people that are still with us that artists can go to when they need that extra spark. Souther is one. Jeff Lynne is one. Rick Rubin. Nile Rodgers. They understand how music works.

The Eagles ✨🌟✨ The first song of theirs that I remember is Hotel California. Momma had to bring us to the bowling alley on her league night. We were just running amok 😂 Someone played it on the jukebox and I was mesmerized... We scrounged up a couple more quarters and played it few more times in a row. First off, I can't believe you mixed up "The Long Run" and "How Long." Bro, you should know better. We forgive you, of course. Now, as far as JD goes, he's a master songwriter and performer. One of the best ever. I was blessed to see him a few years ago in a small theatre by himself and he was spellbinding. I would recommend that folks pick up his 2011 album, "Natural History", in which he presents scaled-down versions of his greatest songs. It's one you can listen to any time and be reminded of just how gifted an artist he is. You should bring him back on often!

Professor, I have been waiting my entire life for this interview. I am dead serious. I have been a JD Souther fan forever. Growing up in the 60s, where AM radio ruled the airwaves, and the car radio was where you heard your favorite songs riding in your mom and dad‘s car, they sounded bigger because they were recorded with the car radio in mind. This is kind of a sad thing, because FM stereo, as amazing as it is, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world, was a downfall for so many of those old recordings. It’s like watching standard movies in high definition. They are all pixelated and look blurry. I’m getting off track here but what a fantastic interview. Once again, you have outdone yourself.
