Hello, it’s 2022 and I finally made part 2! Watch it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V2Fpk-Th3WY.html Remember: just because I don’t think they ever beat their debut...it does NOT mean I automatically think they got awful after that
Did you know that when you achieve nirvana and ascend in to enlightenment, you can no longer hear Adam Levine sing? Also, Kurt Cobain shows up, along with Elvis Presley, Jimmy Hoffa, Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster and Archbishop Leferbve.
that was actually their second album. Their first album is called “the fourth world“ and was released under the band name Kara’s flowers. when they got dropped from their record label they changed their name to maroon and then Maroon 5 when their new label signed them because of a British band named Maroon. so they had already been a Bandan touring for five years when they wrote the material that became “songs for jane”. and they spent a long time honing that second batch of songs. I don’t know if they’re available on the Internet but in the tape trading circles back in the late 90s there were tons of early versions of those songs on old Kara’s Flowers demo tapes.
I feel like Third Eye Blind’s debut album would fit very well on this list. Despite having a few great singles in some of their later work nothing compares to their self-titled debut. Classic.
Would agree completely. 3EB's debut is in my top-10 of all time. An absolute classic. The fact that Jenkins torpedoed the group after this album didn't help.
Is This It is arguably the most important rock album of this century. It laid out such a massive musical footprint for every other band after. I kinda prefer some of their other albums tbh tho
Room on Fire is actually my favorite! (The moodiness of it is actually very different than Is This It, which is what I would call a very happy album, bar Trying Your Luck and Hard to Explain (the latter which would fit in Room on Fire))
Their 1st and 3rd albums are pretty much as good as each other to me. It just depends on my mood. Their 2nd album probably comes 3rd but not not really into anything else they have done.
Honestly I'd argue that Sam's Town outdoes Hot Fuss. Their debut is my favourite album of all time, yes, but I think that Sam's Town is definitely a more mature, coherent, and better crafted album from a technical and creative standpoint, with just as many incredible songs but with more thought and consideration given to each of them. I love how raw Hot Fuss is but nobody can deny that Sam's Town has it beat in being an emotional rollercoaster. It's especially creatively successful when you remember that it sounds absolutely nothing like Hot Fuss; doing a 180 in terms of sound, style, and influence between your first and second album is always a big risk, made even more challenging when your first is as commercially and critically successful and iconic as Hot Fuss, but The Killers really pulled it out of the bag when they made Sam's Town and it deserves just as much attention and appreciation as Hot Fuss gets. I'd argue the same for Day & Age, and Battle Born and Wonderful Wonderful also don't deserve the unfair hate they get either but to each their own.
As I said in the video, The Killers are one of my favorite bands, and I don't dislike any of their albums. It just means I believe that their debut is their best, although their other albums also have a lot of greatness about them (especially Sam's Town and Wonderful Wonderful)
Huge Jacked Man thank you for saving me the time of composing my own comment with this exact same opinion. I saw “The Killers” in the thumb nail and got instantly worried. Each to their own, I get it, but when an album is fronting songs like Read My Mind, When You Were Young (which was nominated for best rock song), and For Reasons Unknown, it’s hard to put the album in any other place than best.
I feel like Pearl Jam is the textbook example of this. I like their other albums to varying degrees, but Ten is just on a whole different level of excellence.
Ten is a top 3 album of all time to me. If you took the best songs off of all their other albums and compiled them all into one “best of compilation,” it wouldn’t be a quarter as good as Ten.
@@williamroberts3719 That compilation would honestly be pretty fire imo, but you're right. Ten would still be better. And Ten is probably my favorite album of all time, or certainly at least in my top 5.
The Darkness with Permission to Land. I remember when that album first came out it was huge. The band felt like a breath of fresh air with their daft but fun glam inspired hard rock, and I Believe in a Thing Called Love was all over the radio stations. Heck, they even headlined Reading and Leeds in 2004. Safe to say they never quite captured that lightning in a bottle again.
Their second album overdid the humourous side of the music to Spinal Tap-esque levels, plus Justin Hawkins' problems around that time (drugs, ego etc) didn't help either
Vann McCann had said on various occasions that they have a sound, and that they intend on sticking to that sound. In all fairness, I believe this is a great way to go, they know what they want to be, have good consistency and they know what they have works.
I agree, I find them to be pretty generic, they kind of sound like a mashup of all eras of Arctic Monkeys but not in a good way. Also the singer's voice is kind of annoyung
Evanescence could be on this list as well imo. Don't get me wrong, I love every single thing they've put out and it almost breaks my heart to see how the other albums didn't get nearly as much attention as Fallen did.
TooTsaka I personally think Fallen is their best album but Self Titled and The Open Door are no slouches. Don’t sleep on the Self Titled album it has some really good songs on it. Lost Whispers (a B-sides album) has some great songs on it too and the two original songs on Synthesis are different but pretty good songs too.
I disagree. A lot of people have said that The Open Door is better and I actually believe that their self-titled album is the best. While I agree that Fallen is the most commercially viable album, it was their intention to steer away from the more mainstream stuff anyway. They still had hits with The Open Door and Evanescence so they still kept up their sound post-Fallen in my opinion.
@@corbinm5237 I know, I love The Open Door as well and it's definitely an evolution for the band! I just think the general public will most likely know them for Fallen or at least the singles off of that album which is why I think it could be on this list as well. Not because the other albums are worse but because Fallen is their most popular and successful album to date
Thank you for mentioning Maroon 5! People forget that hidden beneath their shit-fest of a later catalog is a really great pop rock album as their debut.
Appetite For Destruction is all killer and no filler. Sweet Child O Mine was probably the weakest song on the album. This is the only album that the Gunners’ concert crowd will sing every song to.
Use Your Illusion 2 was just as good as their debut album in my opinion maybe even better. Had some really great songs on it...Knocking on Heavens Door, Dont Cry, You Could Be Mine( used in one of the best movies of all time ), Civil War...I'd listen to those songs before those super played out ones like Welcome to the Jungle or Paradise City...Pearl Jam I'd probably agree their debut was the best.
I completely agree. I remember listening to Hopes &Fears nonstop when it came out. It has such a eerie coolness. All the tracks sound like there supposed to be together. It is truly a perfect album.
Their second album Under the Iron Sea (2006) is my personal favorite, but I agree. The only song I've heard here in the United States on the radio is "Somewhere Only We Know" and after that I haven't heard any other songs from them here.
Wu-Tang Forever is an epic album. 36 Chambers may be more important/ significant/ (better?), but their sophomore double album is still amazing; it was still very well received critically and commercially.
I feel like The Arctic Monkeys debut was their best as to me it is one of the most British albums ever made, follow up albums have been pretty damn great but to me nothing beats their debut
AM don't have one bad album. Humbug is my favourite but they're possibly the only artist with over five albums where I think that not a single album is below an 8. In fact, bar AM (which is an 8 for me), every album is pretty much a strong 9/10.
Definitely Panic!, They definitely went downhill from there. It just got more, and more pop with each album. I’m sad that they didn’t continue with that sound a little bit
always wanted to hear your take on some great debut albums. would you consider continuing this with bands whos sophmore record was their best? would be very interested in that too
We straight up call these "The Boston Effect" in our family. We love them, even Third Stage has some catchy tunes in the form of Amanda, but the facts are the facts.
Man that Bloc Party album changed my life back then. It was electric. I went from being a metal head to suddenly interpol’s album and a few years later Silent Alarm? What a change up to my taste
EVANESCENCE!!! They was the first band I thought of when I read your headline. Their first album Fallen is amazing, and even stands out among the neo-rock-pop-punk revival of the early & mid 2000s. But intra-band turmoil struck, guitarist and co-songwriter Ben Moody flew the coop, and even though Amy Lee soldiered on and made a pretty good sophomore effort with The Open Door, the band never made anything even approaching the same universe as Fallen.
The only contest my dad ever won was a radio contest where he won the second Boston album. He gave it a listen, then gave it away. He told his friend "I've already heard this album," referring to how the second, in many ways, felt like a halfhearted attempt to recapture the sound of the first
I prefer pinkerton to blue, and I've heard quite a few people say they like white album the most. Weezer just never got back to sounding *_exactly_* like blue album
Loved that you mentioned Butnout Revenge, that’s where I first heard them too as well as billy talent. A 7 games with great soundtracks video would be good.
Third Eye Blind is another band that their debut album was such a masterpiece, and never lived up to their potential. Matchbox 20 would be another one that also had an incredible debut, and although the rest of their albums are not terrible, they were never as great as YOSLY
Maybe you're right. Maybe I hold their debut album in a higher regard than I should, but even if that's the case, I still believe it was a solid record, and they were never able to replicate it.
There's no way Boston could have come up with another great album, their first was so amazing and original sounding.I was in HS when it came out and that's all everyone was talking about in class.
It’s because Tom Scholz took forever to put the tracks together by himself before he even hired Delp. In old 70s contracts, you have almost forever to make your 1st and 6 months for the 2nd- while touring
Don’t Look Back was perfectly decent, minus a couple obvious filler tracks, ‘Party’ and ‘Don’t Be Afraid’, and I would say half of Third Stage is alright. I really liked ‘We’re Ready’. The guitar work is killer in that song! I have no use for anything after that. But yea, main point being, they were never able to match the debut album!
This is an old video, but I've got a big one. The Toadies. Rubberneck is a masterpiece, and while Hell Below/Stars Above, which came out seven years later, is also a banger, they've never been able to top their debut.
Kitty_ Screamz I agree that I certainly loved Deuce as a vocalist, the HU album didn’t age well. MySpace references dated a few songs on the album. Imma say this though, American Tragedy was a LOT more successful imo, making HU a guilty pleasure band from time to time :)
I just wanted to say thanks for bringing Franz Ferdinand to my attention! I had heard Take Me Out before and finally decided to listen to more of their music. Now they're my favourite band.
@@TheEclecticSinger it reminds me of Pantera's situation, they had 4 albums before Cowboys from Hell, but CFH is widely considered their ¨true debut¨, as the band had a different frontman and a very different musical style before CFH, even the band disowned those first 4 albums and never re-released them
Great video I love the killers, Bloc Party and Franz Ferdinand, Trying to get into Interpol at the moment. I think these bands could’ve made the list Vampire Weekend- Vampire Weekend (Although Modern Vampires Of The City is fantastic) Foals- Antidotes (Love Foals they’re my favourite band but antidotes has not been beaten) The Kooks- Inside In Inside Out Two Door Cinema Club- Tourist History The Wombats- A Guide To Love, Loss and desperation
King Crimson falls into this category too imo. Even though I enjoy a lot of their later work, especially Red, In the Court of the Crimson King is their best and most influenential work.
Uh no? Many other albums were far greater in terms of consistency and quality, also balancing progginess/experimentation with """accessible""" structures on their music. Court is astonishing, but a few others were stellar
I think a lot of KC fans would disagree. “Red” and “Larks Tongues in Aspic” (especially “Red”) are favourites for a LOT of fans. Quite a few like the trio of albums from the 1980s Adrian Belew/Bill Bruford/Tony Levin lineup more, also
Great debut album indeed! Personally, I would say their first 3 albums, which also was A Rush of Blood to the Head and X&Y are great. Started kind of tipping with Viva la Vida onward. Although, almost every album has some decent songs in them, they just dont have that spunk from their earlier stuff.
Lol, basically any band that was massive in the UK ca. 2002 - 2007: Bloc Party, The Killers, Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, The Darkness, The Fratellis, Interpol, Enter Shikari, Klaxons... the list is endless
Third Eye Blind never topped their debut and you could argue Arcade Fire but the suburbs is pretty close, kinda like the strokes with It This It and Room on Fire
Love all of 3eb records, and I personally think ootv was the best one, but with the loss of Cadogan and the label collapse, they had no chance at another hit.
Sams Town deserves much more credit as an album it had some masterpieces on it like Read My Mind/When You Were Young this was some of The Killers strongest material to date.
This list covers so much space. I was in 5th grade when Boston came out. They really never did live up to it. The band wanted to tour more but Scholz would never quit his job with Polaroid. Decades later Kara's Flowers used to open for one of my bands. A ton of memories in this one.
Big band that pops into my head for something like this: Bullet For My Valentine. I enjoy bits and pieces of their later discography, but I don't think anything they put out will ever top The Poison. Some other bands I feel never really topped their debut, but is really up for debate: ~Circa Survive ~Hollywood Undead ~La Dispute ~Seether ~Weezer
I Like Trains That makes no sense. First off, all music is noise so what you’re really trying to say is that it doesn’t sound pleasant to you. Just because it sounds like noise to you doesn’t mean it is actually noise. I’m not even a fan of any of their music, but their debut definitely has more artistic value than the commercialized rock they’re making today.
Ah yes the smartarse metalhead who uses the "aLl mUsIc is nOIsE" comeback. Well music is meant to have an artistic value and honestly, early BMTH has none of that. Even though Amo is dodgy in places, Sempiternal and That's The Spirit are far better than their debut in almost all areas
I Like Trains You said their debut was noise. That is a very ignorant thing to say. If it was noise it would be considered noise music (which technically still is music) not metal. Their debut has more artistic value because they were closer to making something they wanted to make than making sellout music.
What It Is to Burn by Finch. Their debut had a bunch of bangers. Their follow-up, Say Hello to the Sunshine, only had one or two. Either Ink or Bitemarks and Bloodstains.
Coming back to this comment three years later… I don’t know why I thought Say Hello to Sunshine was a subpar album. That was old me. I think the follow up is as good as the debut.
Though I personally think Sacred Hearts Club is their best album, Torches is definitely their most successful in regards to sales and critical reception.
One of the greatest debut albums of all-time is the self-titled... VIOLENT FEMMES!!! Those guys are terrific, yet incredibly underrated! The ONLY band I've seen more than once. FIVE TIMES to be exact! NEVER disappointed!
Pretty surprised Weezer's Blue Album wasn't on here. Granted, my knowledge of their discography is mainly limited to their singles and haven't given Pinkerton, the hipster darling, a full listen to say it's better than Blue album. But the debut album has their standout singles.
Weezer never topped or equaled the Blue Album. If you ever feel like giving another Weezer album a listen, I suggest the White Album; it's very good, but still doesn't reach the heights of the Blue Album.
Pinkerton (imo and the opinion of many other weezer fans) definitely equalled blue. They're both great albums and classics, but weezer imo should not be on the list
Mutemath’s self-titled debut album is one of my favorite albums of all time, and I don’t think their later entries really ever came close to it, although I enjoy their full discography.
I would include Two Door Cinema Club here. They've yet to release an outright stinker, but Tourist History was their magnum opus, and they've never been able to get better than that album thus far.
Living Colour- Vivid Jane’s Addiction- Nothing’s Shocking Both bands have released solid follow ups that I enjoy very much, but the debuts were legendary.
Personally, I prefer “Pride” to “Vivid”. And there’s really no comparison between “Nothing’s Shocking” and “Ritual De Lo Habitual” “Ritual” is one of the greatest albums of the 90s, and set the scene for the whole Grunge/Alternative explosion in the 90s
KILLERS, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, Arcade Fire, Tinashe, Oceansize...The Strokes, because I cannot easily think of a 7th, but I can hardly tell their first two albums apart...
Silent Alarm and Franz Ferdinand were two of some of my favorite albums when I was in Elementary school. I agree that those bands haven’t topped those albums since released.
Bullet for my Valentine could easily go on this list as well. Albums after their debut have been mixed to damn near unlistenable. It sucks because they’re one of my favorite bands of all time. But The Poison is just such an amazing album and they’ve never come close to that level since.
I Like Trains oh quite the contrary lol there’s stuff I like on every BFMV album. The first 4 songs on Scream, Aim, Fire are AMAZING. Fever has quite a few jams on it. Temper Temper...only has one good song on it (Not Invincible) and it’s a damn bonus track lol Venom has a few good songs as well and I’ll have the unpopular opinion here and say that the entire B side to Gravity, I actually really like. The point I was trying to get across is that, as a whole, Bullet haven’t put out a record that was as solid and consistent as their first.
@@semipilot925 I wouldn’t call their albums after poison mixed tho, Scream was awesome even if it’s more thrash, Fevers pretty good, Temper sucks no good song at all, Venoms mad underrated, hot take I like Gravity especially when they play the songs live, then their new album was actually insane, felt like a mix of Venom and Gravity.
Let's not forget the strokes either! Love their discography, and maybe they'll top 'Is This It' with their return, but I don't know if they ever will. Room On Fire came close I'd happily argue, but damn their debut is just perfection
Adema's, self-titled record Vaux's, There Must Be Some Way to Stop Them Zedd's Clarity The Used's, self-titled record Papa Roach's, Infest Saosin's, self-titled record Also, even though all their albums have the greatest output among tracks and singles, The Lonely Position of Neutral by TrustCompany stands out as an album they can't top. Seriously, that's the only album I've heard that doesn't have one bad track.
I personally love all Trust Company’s albums, there’s not a bad song on any of them. I actually really love Dreaming in Black and White, not a bad song on there either.
I love The Killers I do think Hot Fuss is the best debut album to date, I mean that sound that waw totally new to the 2000's at the time you have tracks such as "Mr Brightside", "Jenny was a friend of mine", "Somebody told me". My personal favourite was Hot Fuss until I listened to Sam's Town, as someone else said they did a totally 180 on this track. The sound is so different and I love it, you have tracks like "Read my mind", "When you where young", "The River is wild" and Bones".
