You are right. I went to Liberia 1989 to live there. I was Peace Corps Volunteer there in the 70s. I got there just in time for their first ever civil war and stayed as long as I could. As a young teenager in the late 70's, the "Breakfast In America" album was one of those lps that I'd hear while chilling round girls houses & although I'm a blues,funk,ska & reggae beats guy this album has always been a guilty pleasure - the first thoughts I had of this record as a youth was "wow what a perfectly put together album & so brilliantly produced" - that thought is still with me to this day. Just a friendly 'warning' (although that sounds too serious, LOL), I've seen people entirely misread the meaning of the song, thinking it's being critical of 'wasting time' and wandering around aimlessly. I've seen Roger H say his point was along the lines of "we get where we get one way or another, and it may not be as we expected or even where we expected, but don't weigh yourself down with expectations to the point you forget to enjoy what you did, let alone flogging yourself over not 'being perfect' ". So he's NOT being critical of not doing things the 'right' way, or as soon as may have been technically possible, because sometimes we simply get there going "the long way home". Cheers

Supertramp is one of those hidden gem bands that people know a few songs, but don't know the group. I feel like most of the younger generation only knows them if their parents were fans growing up. They are one of the most unique sounds of that era IMO and deserve more love than they get today.

Lyrics: "Take The Long Way Home" So you think you're a Romeo playing a part in a picture-show Take the long way home Take the long way home Cos you're the joke of the neighborhood Why should you care if you're feeling good Take the long way home Take the long way home But there are times that you feel you're part of the scenery all the greenery is comin' down, boy And then your wife seems to think you're part of the furniture oh, it's peculiar, she used to be so nice. When lonely days turn to lonely nights you take a trip to the city lights And take the long way home Take the long way home You never see what you want to see Forever playing to the gallery You take the long way home Take the long way home And when you're up on the stage, it's so unbelievable, unforgettable, how they adore you, But then your wife seems to think you're losing your sanity, oh, calamity, is there no way out? Does it feel that you life's become a catastrophe? Oh, it has to be for you to grow, boy. When you look through the years and see what you could have been oh, what might have been, if you'd had more time. So, when the day comes to settle down, Who's to blame if you're not around? You took the long way home You took the long way home...........

It's a shame that album never got the recognition out deserves. It's as good as anything Floyd or Yes did in the 70s.

Disagree. Their masterpiece is Crime of the Century. This album is good, but they wanted to be more commercial and more airplay, so they produced this album.

I believe this album was one of my 13 for a penny when I joined the Columbia House record club. It was the first thing I did when I started my first real job when I was 16 in 1982. I knew all the lyrics and every note to every song on this album, "Breakfast in America". Thank you for this. I haven't listened to this in 30+ years.

This song is by Roger Hodgson and he's singing about the struggle of being a rock star and the reality of life as just Roger at home...Great reaction guys ! You must do School ! It's their best !!! Please ??? Ha !
@christianman73
@christianman73 2 года назад
The lyrics say that the person in the song is looking back on his life, and thinking about what he could have been, if he had only had more time. Unless Rodger Hodgson was looking back and regretting becoming a rock star, it doesn't seem like the lyrics are about him. He seems to be singing about the struggles, hopes, and dreams of an everyday, non-famous person.

My favourite group of all time. They have a unique sound. The music is often upbeat although the lyrics are often sad or dark. Any song from any of their five consecutive albums beginning with the all-time classic Crime of the Century followed by Crisis? What Crisis? (so underrated), Even In the Quietest Moments (sublime), Breakfast In America (most successful commercial LP), and Famous Last Words (underrated). These guys wrote about loneliness, social commentary, love, love lost, spirituality and more. Superb lyricists and musicians with great production. Very few pop/rock groups can meld organ and electric piano with regular doses of Harmonica (School is the classic example), saxophone and clarinet and make it sound great.

My favorite Supertramp memory is from a concert that they didn’t even play in. It was the Texxas Jam in the summer of ‘79 in Dallas and man was it hot. We were on the field (as we were for all Texxas Jams!) and really couldn’t move much because it was wall to wall people. Van Halen had just finished their set and wore everyone out. The break between sets was taking forever because Boston wanted the sun to go down before playing and we were just trying to survive the heat. Then a dude breaks out his harmonica and does the Long Way Home intro. Everyone started singing and partying and it just got us all revved up for the next band. Love me some Supertramp!

Thank you guys so much for( at least for me )one of those forgotten songs from the late seventies, when for a very few short years back then, it seemed like an extra special vibe had emerged, almost in unison, from virtually every song released during that time. 1979 seemed to be ground zero in that particular musical genre's timeline.
