This is my favourite Supertramp song and I am so glad you enjoyed it. Their lead singer Roger Hodgson said no one gets this song like the British but I think it has a universal appeal. The whole song plays up idea of someone unsatisfied with life and striving for the American Dream without really understanding the culture. One obvious line, he wants kippers for breakfast because that's fancy to him but a low class meal in Texas. It's about reaching for fame and celebrity without really knowing what that means. It's a joke but an earnest one.

For people who knew Supertramp before the release of Breakfast in America, the album is considered in many ways as their attempt to really break into the American market and as such, it is a far more watered-down and commercial album than their previous 3, Crime of the Century, Crisis? What Crisis? and Even in the Quietest Moments. The latter of those 3 had been their previous peak, barely breaking top 20 on the album charts in the US, despite being top ten in Canada and throughout Europe. That being said, the Breakfast in America album has stood the test of time and did sound, and still sounds, different than much of the top 40 music of the time and given that it did achieve its intended goal of reaching no 1 in the US, one has to respect that. I'm not a huge fan of the album as, to me, it pales in comparison to Crime of the Century and Even in the Quietest Moments, but I can understand how people do like it and how it can serve as a gateway into their earlier work. School/Bloody Well Right, Hide in Your Shell, Rudy, Give A Little Bit, Fool's Overture, Even in the Quietest Moments - you don't know Supertramp if you don't know these songs.

it is true - and I have always thought this... but listening to them again, I am amazed at the level of production, the layering and usage of instruments is off the charts, even compared to Crime Of The Century. Each track is so cleverly built. But I will take Crime Of The Century over Breakfast In America every time, mainly for the strength of every track on the album. Breakfast has a couple of weak tracks for my tastes and relies upon Take the long way home, Gone Hollywood, Goodbye Stranger, Breakfast In America and Logical Song (which is a high hit rate compared to any other album, just not compared to Crime Of the century, where every track is superb)

I remember when this album came out. I was 13. The boy next door would play the record everyday. I was amazed that I never got sick of listening to it. I hated listening to repetition, but not when its Supertramp. Only band ever to have that effect on me 🔥

This was one of my all time favorite bands. Saw them live 3 times in Edmonton and once in Toronto. The Logical Song was their best from their first album, but Breakfast in America topped the charts right after it's release. I have fond memories of listening to 8-track tapes of the album on perpetual repeat while driving through the Rockies in my Camaro Berlinetta. Thanx you two for the lovely stream of memories concerning my misspent youth.

Blood Sweat and Tears, Earth Wind and Fire, Chicago, Ides of March, Tower of Power. The last two are kinda funky with horns. ENJOY! :)

Monster album. Circus-like sound on this song with the womp-womp of the horn and the killer vocals.

For another Supertramp vibe check out "Fool's Overture". If you want to hear some horns check out "Get It On" by a group called "Chase". Jay will have definitely heard it played by bands at college football games but it is one of those songs you recognize but never find out the title to. The group did not have a long run because the leader died in a plane crash around 1974. If you want 80's vibe with horns, you of course can think of "Huey Lewis and the News" which you already know and love but you can check out Glenn Frey who went on a solo career after The Eagles disbanded. "You Belong To The City" and "The Heat Is On" were 2 massive hits that both feature a lot of saxophone and got a lot of radio air play.

CHICAGO!! YES Please do "Introduction" as I have begged you to do several times. It's the first song on the first Chicago albums and has all the crunchy delicious and gooey parts you love about Chicago. It is their absolute essence in one song. Back me up everyone.

Adam Levine’s group is Maroon 5. For horns I think old school: Blood Sweat and Tears, The Ohio Players, and Sly and the Family Stone. Speaking of funhouse music. The first song that came to mind for me is a short instrumental from the Lost Boys soundtrack, To The Shock of Miss Louise. You could react to every song of that soundtrack.

A number of songs from the album "Crime of the Century" really kicked off Supertramp as a super band. Listen to these songs from that album: "Bloody Well Right" - awesome, "Give a Little Bit" - been remixed by current artists, "Crime of the Century" - this is a masterpiece in my opinion. Another great songs by them is: "Dreamer"
