Hope everyone’s enjoying this episode! There’s probably one little extra nuanced thing that I might not have properly brought up during our discussion that I think is important (and we may have mentioned it in other episodes): AWARDS SEASON. One reason that VFX does not get brought up perhaps more than it should is that the film studio is often ‘backing’ particular members of its crew for awards consideration. And rightly so. The director did an amazing job, as did production design, and cinematography etc. But in my view, sometimes, the film studio fears that ‘highlighting’ the VFX work runs the risk of diminishing the role of certain departments. I don’t think this is ever openly said, but it sometimes feels that way, as if by saying a lot of the environment was 'CG' makes less of the production design or other depts (when of course it's all a wonderful collaboration).

I worked on this film at framestore for the better part of a year and the whole publicity about this having no cgi is completly enraging and an insult to all the artists who worked hard producing the work that is so good that nobody knows it's there

I understand your disappointment. To me, it's the same... in a movie that talks so much about respect and has such strong messages about how unfair life can be for women, and how the industry can glamorize and make things seem perfect when they're not, they go and do the same to an entire community. They disrespect the artists who worked on the film, they disrespect an entire class that, without them, the film wouldn't have had the success it did. The ironic part is that if the effects weren't so good (and congratulations to everyone involved), they could never claim there's no CGI. In the end, it's just hypocrisy, and the movie's message rings hollow to me.

The whole problem is with these marketing guys who spend their time on social media and they picked up this narrative that the people doesn't like CGI, so they desperately want to adhere to that audience now. It's the same we saw a couple of years ago with the political correctness trend to cast only women for head roles to avoid sexism comments.

Shameful? Wow. No. After seeing so much anti VFX nonsense in every corner of film discussion, making the behind the scenes more understandable to ludites is honestly a sensible thing to do.

Ok so you agree with them removing all mentions to VFX and blocking the VFX bourse showreels? How is that sensible?

“More understandable”? What is this? The breakdown of quantum physics? It is no different had they left the original green screen backdrops. There is an obvious marketing motive behind all this vfx silencing nonsense.

Thats the thing! There shouldn't be any such anti VFX nonsense anywhere. Its an essential part of film making and should be treated as such. Everybody wants movies to look good and we work to get that done, but when stuff like this happens its just unfair to artists across the globe who spent probably years perfecting everyframe! They already cut down thee credit list significantly and now to this, its unacceptable to say the least.
