Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do revolutionized the world of martial arts. By incorporating fencing style foot work into bare knuckle boxing, the style is as flashy as it is powerful. Today, we take a look at some concepts I learned while visiting @jkdcolorado

@@Jspg119 Then your best option is online from someone who can show you the moves so that you can get the form and some basic attack and movements correct, but you'll need a training partner because there are so many things related to positioning that someone needs to correct you on. I'm going to a JKD club and also learn and practice from the online videos and I realise how important it is to attend a club and be corrected by your instructor or senior training partner.

JKD Lead hand= Bladed stance, 3/4 or vertical fist, 'Hammer Principle' ( from fencing, move the hand first, dropping towards target,) Explosive fencing like burst of rear leg, Upper body twirl (Jack Dempsey,) fist lands before the lead foot hits the ground (Jack Dempsey, ) hit with bottom three Knuckles (Jack Dempsey.) These are all the components that make a JKD lead hand powerful. Bruce incorporated Boxing, fencing and specific things form Jack Dempsey into this punch.

Lee was a fan of Jack Dempsey's work. His straight lead was also heavily inspired by the way Dempsey throw his jab with the falling step ( jab with your body weight behind it). The way you throw with the rear hand with the rear leg step forward is called trigger step, basically to increase the range of your rear punch. There's another concept that you left out is the High Low concept. Basically if i attack with the lead hand (eye poke, straight lead) then the follow up won't be the rear hand (most of the time) but the lead leg instead with side kick to the leg or front snap kick to the balls (in self defense) or push kick (if i'm doing combat sport). Of course there's another combination to use the rear hand is jab/eye poke to create flinch reaction and used passing step to switch side, get close and barrage them with hooks and uppercuts

rule of thumb in jkd: start off every encounter with a kick. Bruce's best practice in one of his books. also to make all kinds of crazy sounds to irritate your opponent. the retreating jab is part of a pendulum movement its also to avoid lower kicks

Bruce Lee: This is not a style, jeet kune do is about using only what you need. I only use what i need and works for me People: Ok, i’m gonna make that a style and copying it (? Ok no, to be fair the video is great, and explain a lot of the basics of jeet kune do, but lots of people thinks that jeet kune do has a proper style to learn, but people shouldn’t try to copy bruce lee moves, because what worked for him may not work for you and me. It’s not about you adapting to jeet kune do, it’s about jeet kune do adapting to you, to have your own jeet kune do

When your shoulder is turned against the opponent (3.19) your hit lands him before and he cannot even reach you if you are not dwarf or otherwise short hand (attacker most likely will hit in a box formation, if attacks) but you can. After the first punch comes the back hand. Try it. Basic Silat punch combo. Your first posture is perpendicular to opponent, 1st and 2nd punches comes from the body rotation.

I do CANE-DO--- and have challenged "jeet kune do" guys.. one in particular- challenged me- and without hesitation, I accepted. He took his bladed position and I could easily see the shoulder lift to tighten and throw his jab-- and smacked his ankle rather sharply with my cane and he was down.. and I didn't have to move.. :) I told him- "you need more practice".. and walked away.. (I need to clarify- I have high ranking black belts in 5 arts- plus jeet kune do and just plain hillbilly mean- also a retired ranger- ex fed bodyguard with over 1000 Transactions- which is what I call fights because someone always pays--- and only 2 losses)...
