Basic Manners Everyone Should Have | Jamila Musayeva
Over the years of working as an etiquette consultant, I have written down a good checklist of most commonly broken etiquette rules. These rules are very simple, at first glance, yet most often overlooked. Based on my observations, I have noted some of the most basic good manners that everyone should have. So here are the simplest rules that create the biggest impact on the way we present ourselves to the world.
Enjoy the video and let me know what you think of it. As always, your feedback and video suggestions are always welcomed!
Sincerely yours,
Jamila Musayeva

Other basic manners everyone should apply in their daily habit, please put your phone away when talking or in the presence of other people it’s quite disrespectful and also learn to be a good listener everyone wants to be heard but they don’t want to take time to listen. Thank you Jamila for sharing this video.

And do not talk on the phone when you are at the register/cashier paying for something. It’s extremely rude. Go to self check out if you want to talk on your phone.

This video really goes in line with "debunking elegance myths" one. A great lesson is that etiquette, manners and politeness is for everyone, not only a certain "elite", but also for everywhere, not only in high end restaurants. I love that you are making etiquette accessible and relevant to our everyday life!

People starting to eat without everyone seating at the table especially the hostess who cooked for them gets me everytime. I have lived in the UK for 30 years and most people don't hold the door. I really don't uderstand how they are labelled as very polite. The great thing about your list is that these are very easy tweacks to make so achievable for anyone who wants to "upgrade". Thank you for the reminder ♥

Since my childhood mostly I have been the only one doing all these good acts.My whole life people normally just want to grab first, reach first, leave first, leave everything because they think why should they bother about others...endless cruelty. Finally after watching this video I am very glad to know I was not a naive or someone who can be easily stepped over but I am actually a person with naturally many etiquettes.😊

I wish people would follow this old etiquette rule: if someone declines an invitation please don’t ask them why they can’t come. Just say you’re sorry they won’t be able to attend and/or suggest another time. Demanding an explanation may force someone to lie. One friend did this so much, I stopped being her friend.

Fun fact about elevator manner in Japanese. When riding escalators, in the Kanto region, people typically stand on the left side and leave the right side open for those who want to walk. In Kansai region, it's often the opposite, with people standing on the right side. This is a common etiquette practice in Japan. Something good to know if any of you are visiting Japan :) hope this was helpful 😊

As a New Yorker, I’ve seen a lot of these basic rules broken and it’s very irksome when it happens. I can’t tell you the amount of times someone stands on the left side of an escalator, or enters an elevator or train before exiting passengers can get off. Sometimes individuals also struggle with waiting in line when boarding a bus or doesn’t hold the door open for someone close behind them. Thank you for this latest recap on the most basic of manners, Jamila.

It’s outrageous that I saw a woman curse someone out who asked to pass when her and another were blocking the path to get up the escalator 😢 I heard her say she was tired from working on her feet but that didn’t give her the right to be rude.

I live in Toronto and rarely do people hold the door, let others exit before entering, have good table manners, know the rules of walking (often people won't even pull their dogs to one side of a sidewalk to let others pass!) or show patience in a queue. I would like to add giving up a seat on public transit for the elderly, pregnant women, people with visible disabilities or parents with babies.

Thank you for this amazing video!❤ I am a college student, i can very proudly say that i follow most of these, except the elevator one and classroom ones. Me and my friends usually walk on the escalator but i didnt know that there were particular sides for that and there is just no energy left after all the classes and extracurriculars in college but i do hope one day i will be able to follow them too!!! It really is annoying how some people dont treat vendors and other service providers nicely, like it doesn't take much from you but might make them feel well, so why not just say ! By the way, the flowers are really pretty and your top kind of match with them❤

Do Not Be On Your Phone When Hanging Out With Friends! - I can’t believe how many people check their messages, or emails, or even reply WHILE being at a dinner table, or grabbing a coffee with a friend. Simply sad. 😢 I am usually setting up an alarm for 10 minutes before I have to leave. That way, I never worry about the time going by too fast, while having 10 minutes to say good bye.

The touching/personal space is my nemesis. I'm quite reserved in that regard, I have to know a person really well and have a close relationship with them to feel comfortable with more than a handshake. So whenever I'm at a social event with aquaintances, I have to fight with myself to accept hugs or kisses upon greeting. It's even worse when someone tries to come too close on our first meeting. I offended a friend's boyfriend once: we were just introduced and he came in for a hug or a kiss, and I reared back like a spooked horse. It was an incredibly awkward situation.

I understand. I have had people cross my personal space to touch my jewelry. They like the pendant and have no regard to touch something on my chest. It’s so strange to me. I had an incident where a guy my friend was dating came in for a hug. I extended my hand for a handshake. I feel women are more accommodating in allowing men to cross our boundaries to be the “good girl”. Shouldn’t they be considered the rude boy for pressuring a lady to go against her comfort zone?

One thing I struggle with is how to tell people that they should fix something on themselves. For instance if they have food on their face, lipstick on their teeth, or if their zipper is down. It's a quick fix, and if it were me I would want to know, but I never know how to bring it up without embarrassing them, especially if we are in a group setting.
@thandosdance1504

I would appreciate you have something on your face. I had my zip open at the office and after walking around and no one told me and when a colleague told me I actually went back to the other side of the office and told them how nasty of them not to tell me that my zip was open😊. I asked them if tables were turned would they appreciate it if I did the same and the answer was no so I told them that at least it would have been one or two people n not more. We laughed about it and now everyone knows to approach me if something is not appropriate with me.😂😂

Thank you so much for sharing these basic manners! I especially agree with the last one, thinking before you speak. It's not just people the public who will find these comments later, but your family, friends, work colleagues and significant other. I would be so horrified if a close friend of mine made nasty comments to people all the time. These days I buy flowers almost every week and I have purple tulips and pink roses. ♥

thank you for doing helpful and valuable content like this. i personally need reminders like these because it really is a challenge to navigate social life with different kinds of people of different cultures and perceptions. as an introvert who is so comfortable with solitude, ensuring that good manners are observed when i’m outside is crucial for me- especially i’m seen as academically educated. we also love people who respects each’s privacy without being misinterpreted as snobbish. introverts need to decompress once in a while. Can we add to move your buggy to the side in the supermarket when you stop to browse. Almost everybody leaves their buggy in the center of the aisle making it impossible to pass. The same goes for standing in the middle of the aisle or doorway to look on your phone or chat with someone. Be mindful and step to the side.

Amazing tips, Jamila. Thank you for continuing to share your wisdom with us! I have a question. I live in America in the South where people are often “touchy,” so to speak. Oftentimes when meeting someone new, they’ll come straight for you, even going so far as to say, “I’m a hugger!” As if to excuse what is likely not the best etiquette when meeting someone for the first time. What would you suggest as an appropriate reaction if someone is opening their arms to you, expecting an embrace?

In my language (German) there is a politeness form (Sie, Ihnen, Ihr…). Young people tend to override this and use the colloquial form even form perfect strangers. I don‘t like that. The politeness form may sound a bitt stiff, but it gives a respectful distance between you and the other person. Conversely, when you get to know a person better and you change to the coloquial form, it creates a heartwarming feeling of familiarity and friendship.

I would be interested in a video that talks about etiquette rules are that important for men. Obviously most of your viewers are women, but I could imagine that there are certain etiquette rules specific to men as well.

Hello, Jamila. Could you please make a video on how to behave/respond in situations where a toxic ex or a friend who betrayed us and didn't treat us well in the past tries to come back in our life? how to deal with negative people/comments in general?

Even though good manners sometimes should be a given, it still helps to show your appreciation and acknowledge them when you are on the receiving end.

It is important to be mindful of others time, so when performing actions that require lines make sure you are pointed with the task and not wasting the time of others.

would love a video about hats/caps/beret ettiquette and when/how to remove them. I understand you are to remove them when eating/entering a place? And what if you are on a terrace dining? only wear them outside? Is it indifferent whether you dine indoors or outdoors? Does it make a difference the type of hat (like a beret)? if you take if off, where do you lay it? should you caress your hair to make sure it is neat? What about wearing a hat to church? What about inside a church wedding? I would love to know what would be the correct etiquette. What about hat/cap and gloves also? Umbrella? Thanks so much. I believe it is important to know how to properly behave with all the 'extras'.

I was completely unaware of this escalator rule--I actually had been under the impression that it was rude to try and walk up an escalator past others. That being said. Where I live, most escalators only fit one person.
