Basic Off Road Tips for Beginners in a Bone Stock Jeep Wrangler JL 2 Door Sport plus Rock Crawling

People new to Jeeps and or to off roading in general have been asking Cindy and I to make a video highlighting the some of the basics, tips and tricks that every newbie should know and for quite some time now. And, I have to say that we've been reluctant to do so if only because we know that we're not professionals or experts in anything and understand full well that the way we choose to do things isn't necessarily the right way, the best way or the only way. With that said, we finally got a chance to take Pippi, our bone stock, Jeep Wrangler JL 2-door Sport and with a stick, out on a trail known as Last Chance Canyon and to test her out on some rocks. And, while we were there, we decided to use the opportunity to film some of the things that we've learned over the years and share them with you. Things like, airing down your tires, disconnecting your front sway bar links, shifting into low range and picking a good line. Of course, the only thing we would ever hope for, is that the information you see might be of help to you someday.
Oh, as an added bonus, you'll also get to see JET testing out his new 38" Nitto Ridge Grapplers out on the rocks. We hope you enjoy.

Seriously, there isn't enough content around like this - what a stock base model can do, and how to do it. Everything is Rubicon's and built up rigs. Thanks for this. It really is going to help a lot of folks just getting started in the wheeling world.

@@wayalife it's a shame the JL forum still holds a grudge and won't allow links to any of your content. This is something most of the members would really get a kick out of seeing...and it answers those ever present forum questions: Do I need lockers? Do I need a lift? Do I need 35's...or 37's? Thank you. I've been wheeling for over 50 years; know all about doing it with manuals and no lockers. Your video economically demonstrates 100% of what must be considered for safe and fun wheeling. Excellent advice and superb attitude. Love the Rubicon demo without ever saying a thing about it. I greatly respect your skill and attitude dealing with minimalism. Moreover, that base Wrangler can be built up, but starting out with a Rubicon is the most economical way to do it. Enjoyed.

My wife and I lived in the Mountain West from 1982 to 2007 during which time we bought three new 4WD vehicles and a few used ones. Each of the three new ones had list prices under $19,000, manual transmissions, standard steel wheels, factory skid plates and recovery points and open differentials. None of them were lifted and we used 235/75R15 tires on all three of the ones we bought new. We drove those three vehicles on about 200 camping and picnic trips to more than 100 different locations, often using primitive (unimproved) or badly neglected and rutted roads to places many miles from the nearest paved roads. In 2008, our daughter totaled the last of those three vehicles so I’ve had to content myself with watching videos of other people driving 4WD vehicles. I think people with little or no 4WD experience would learn more useful information (and perhaps gain more inspiration) from watching this video than from watching any of the other dozens of videos I’ve seen so far - maybe even more than watching ALL of the other videos I’ve seen so far.

20 years ago we drove the “Big Jeep”. Long arm suspension , 35” tire, lockers and low gears. After awhile the fun and challenge of off roading lost its luster. When I stepped into my buddies Manuel TJ Sport on 31/10.5 15”s I had more fun on small simple obstacles than driving the Hammers on my built rig. It’s nice to be able to take the built rig out without limitations, but it’s also enjoyable to go explore and test yourself with the simple things. The real-world demonstrations of the truck’s capabilities, and the techniques you need to use, made it look like it was kind of just a documentary of a day on the trail, but the situations were obviously chosen to demonstrate each point. I run with guys who are constantly paranoid! They worry constantly about needing 37's, a 6 inch lift and a winch...I laugh and tell them they worry too much. What you do need are good skills, a good spotter and sensibility. Just don't do a trail that is beyond the capability of your rig....because no matter how capable your rig is, there's a trail that you won't be able to do. It was refreshing to see a trail run done with just the basics. Thank you.

This goes to show the stock TJ could do the job with tires you can live with on the street and get great gas mileage with too. Plus, just like he got his used "new take-off" rock guard from a Rubicon owner who no doubt took it off to replace it with some gnarly rock rails, you can also buy all those "new take-off" wheel and tire packages from all those Rubicon & Willys owners on Craig's List on the cheap and then Pippy would be unstoppable and have a second set of "hiking shoes" for off-roading. ... Like their dog does. Loved that video clip BTW when the dog tried on his rubber boots!

This has been a great series so far! New Jeep owners would be better served to spend their money on gas and time on the trails than the latest "parking lot hero" accessories. Seen several people spend a few thousand dollars on lift, wheels and tires only to realize a Jeep isn't for them. Always good to see Ripley!

@@wayalife question. We bought a 2020 keep gladiator, and it appears to have a rough country suspension. The truck looks lifted but don’t know how many inches it was. I tried calling rough country but they needed the serial number of the shocks. Would you happen to know how to figure this out. Plus we added 18 inch black rhinos on 35s. Thank you and look forward to your response.
@wayalife
@wayalife 10 месяцев назад
@@coupleinarizona8900 I am sorry but if Rough Country couldn't help out, I'm not sure how I could. If you're just running 35's, I would have to guess a 2-2.5" lift at most.

So good to see how a stock JL and probably Jk, TJ , can rock crawl without lifts, lockers, big tyre's etc.. It's all about driver control and picking the correct line. Well done.

Recognizing that I am a newbie, however I’ve watched lots of Wheeling content and I have to say that’s the most impressive display of skill that I have seen. I’ve heard it say that equipment is a crutch for skill and you certainly demonstrated that.

The most important thing in this video are the repeated stalls. Showing that goes a long way towards helping people get over egos and worry about looking like a fool. Its much more fun for beginners when they aren't worrying about the old hands judging them.

This was one of the best videos I have seen. Love the bone stock manual 2 door and reasonable trail. I really love the looks and amazing capability of the “fully built” jeeps, but to me this showcased just how much a regular wrangler can do with a good team working through the obstacles without lockers, automatic trans, AT tires or even the factory LSD. This is the way.

WOW. I am super impressed with Pippi! This is by far the. Best. Off-road video I can recall ever watching. At least from the perspective of what a stock base Wrangler is capable of. Sorry TFL, the bar has been raised, the gauntlet. Thrown. Down.

One viewer, Fred M. said he would never have tried some of those obstacles himself due to lack of skill. Me too. At one point as you were planning your line for some scary rocks, for a brief second I saw that there was enough room to drive around the obstacle! An even better line? LOL. But, by the end of the vid I saw that most of the obstacles had a convenient bypass. (there is nothing like these trails that is not private land where I live) We are grateful to have Waylife videos to show us what can be done in the stock 2 door TJ instead of the newbie carnage that could happen when we try to answer the question ourselves! But that is fun for many folks that knowingly choose not to use the bypass.They are not on their way to a campsite, I see that those rocks ARE the destination!
@wayalife
@wayalife 2 года назад
We're glad that you enjoyed our video and yes, most of the hardest obstacles all had bypasses. We were purposefully taking them to show people like yourself that it can be done and in a totally bone stock 2-door Sport. 😎

I also noticed that every time you took a less than optimal line it was only because you were fighting the stick/clutch and had less than smooth throttle modulation. (You are definitely an expert and definitely modest about it) You obviously have a lot of Jeep toys with manuals in your stable and I'll bet some of those vintage ones are manuals. I'm wondering why you thought the stick would be better than the "stock" automatic for Pippy? I love manuals for classic road cars & sports cars (& I live in an area with big city traffic issues, where slow, stop & go with my manuals suck) but for low speed and/or off-road driving?? How can the manual be a benefit to you guys for Pippy?
