Section 3 of the Basin and Range Trail thru-hike vlog series documents a 116-mile hike from HWY 6 to Carvers. In this section, the BRT thru-hiker will walk Big Sand Springs Valley, Morey Peak Wilderness Study Area, the Hot Creek Range, Fandango Wilderness Study Area, Little Fish Lake Valley, the Monitor Range, Table Mountain Wilderness, Monitor Valley, Alta Toquima Wilderness, the Toquima Range, and Big Smokey Valley.
The Basin and Range Trail is a spectacular 1090 mile thru-thru-hiking route across central Nevada’s Basin and Range country, better known as the Great Basin. The Basin and Range Trail showcases some of the best hiking Nevada has to offer, along with some of the toughest. Nevada is the driest state in the country, as well as the most mountainous. There are over 310 named mountain ranges in Nevada, and many see little to no hiker traffic. The Basin and Range Trail, or BRT, connects 22 Nevada mountain ranges, 21 valleys (basins), 11 wilderness areas, 5 wilderness study areas, a national wildlife management area and 1 national park. A thru-hike of the BRT immerses the hiker into the vast and lonely Nevada wilderness for roughly 2 months, making for an unforgetting long distance hiking adventure.
Section 3 of the Basin and Range Trail hikes Big Sand Springs Valley, and visits Project Faultless nuclear test site. Pass abandoned mining camps in Morey Canyon as the route enters the Hot Creek Range and the Morey Peak Wilderness Study Area. Summit the spectacular Morey Peak, descend into Six Mile Canyon and the Fandango Wilderness Study Area. Cross Little Fish Lake Valley and enter the Monitor Range via Clover Creek. Then, it’s a 2000ft bushwhack up to the crest of the Monitor Range. Hike the crest north across the Table Mountain Wilderness, exit via North Fork Mosquito Creek. Cross Monitor Valley and hike up Pine Creek into the Alta Toquima Wilderness. The Toquima Range has multiple streams, some with trout. Bag South Summit Mt Jefferson and follow Jefferson Canyon down into Big Smoky Valley into the town of Carvers to resupply.

This section was very memorable, with 3 large mountain ranges, and their high points, to traverse. Beautiful and downright remote country, right in the heart of central Nevada!

Your videos inspire me to continue filling my calendar with multi day hikes as much as possible. Loved watching your entire CDT series too. Incredible content. I'm missing the great instrumental metal a bit in this series so far.

I love to hear that about the metal music, I wish more people were into it, but sadly, it scares them away. Hope you have some great multi-day hikes lined up!

@@SeekingLost Several section hikes of the AZ Trail in coming months for me. And artists like Modern Day Babylon and Andromeda stood out to me in the CDT series. That sound is how it feels to grind out a steep climb, anticipating the reward.

This is my second time through this video, and I really enjoyed this section of your trip. I've always wanted to hike in the Table Mountain Wilderness and was doing some research on it this last fall, when I came across your channel. Really nice. Thanks for posting the BRT hike in these longer segments. - Mike

Stunning. Just stunning. And surprisingly beautiful. A different surprise: almost no rattlesnakes. I expected they were crawling all over the place: we saw quite a few on the highway to Ely.
@SeekingLost
@SeekingLost 2 года назад
That is a bit surprising to hear about all the snakes near Ely. Besides one person who told me about a bunch of snakes in the Toiyabes, most locals I spoke with seem to say central Nevada isn't very snake dense. In episode 8, a rancher took me in for a night and then hiked with me for a couple of days. He said in 30 years, he'd only seen 4 near his property.
@horizontaal
@horizontaal 2 года назад
@@SeekingLost we saw them on the Great Basin Hwy, four, more than anywhere else. Dead. From the car they looked like rattlesnakes, but some were quite big, ‘imposters’ maybe, bullsnakes perhaps. We were a little too impressed by this to go for even a small hike - we’re from The Netherlands, the most dangerous wild animal we know is a rabbit. So that’s why I sometimes shout ‘watch out!’ at your videos, when I see you walking through the dessert ;-)

Those puffy white clouds you talk about at 1:13:22 and mentioned it had just been clear bluebird skies most of the hike so far. The area of Nevada I live in those clear cloudless blue skies are referred to as "Severe Clear!"

2 things I learned about hiking in Nevada. 1) wear long hiking pants. 2) wear tactical gloves. Excellent video work.
@SeekingLost
@SeekingLost 2 года назад
No kidding. I used to carry some fingerless gloves, but wore them out and never replaced them. For the Mojave-Sonoran Trail though, I picked up some gloves. Hands get tore up pretty quickly on those bushwhacks. Glad you can relate!

Excellent quality video and love the music too. I admire your adventuresome spirit. Very brave of you to go deep in caves. Was expecting you to have more problems with scorpions, rattlesnakes snd mountain lions. Do you have plans to hike the pct?
@SeekingLost
@SeekingLost 2 года назад
Thanks Christine! Funny thing is, I picked up a UV light for rockhounding over the summer and would scan the ground outside my van at night for fluorescent rocks. I couldn't believe how many scorpions I saw! Made me think about all those nights I cowboy camped while hiking this route, but still never even saw a scorpion on this hike. Anyhow. No immediate plans for the PCT but not ruling it out for the future. I'm just on this kick right now where I'm mapping out new routes, and enjoying the idea of more "exploring".

Would carrying a small axe or machete been worthwhile for the bushwacking?
@SeekingLost
@SeekingLost 2 года назад
Both would have been helpful, but it's just a matter of carrying them. In the end, the one thing I wish I had that was light and practical enough, was gloves. I used to carry some, but fell out of practice. I will be bringing a pair of fingerless gloves again for the next bushwhacking adventure.
