"There's a reason you separate military and the police. One fights the enemies of the state, the other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people." Yes, this line has taken on a life of its own well beyond the series, for obvious reasons.

The showrunners definately seemed to have learned from their Star Trek times that stretching the writers to 26 Episodes a Season is not the best idea. With just half of that you constantly get them at their A-Game.

@@TroyConvers5000I’ve been enjoying For All Mankind recently and it made me realise I wish Moore had been a writer for any of the new Trek. Or, at least allowed to write the sequel to DS9 as they did in What We Left Behind documentary with the hypothetical episode. I love all the stuff he’s been involved in writing. I do miss seasons having more episodes though I know it’s very likely gone for good. I mean one season of BSG had about 20 episodes and managed to maintain a high quality throughout.
@neilbiggs1353
@neilbiggs1353 5 месяцев назад
@@Quotenwagnerianer I'm not convinced. Babylon 5 was consistently high quality for 3 22 episode seasons, mostly written by a single person. The point is the show needs to have the depth to justify the number of episodes, BSG is 20 episodes a season for the remainder of the show, it's only 13 eps for season 1

Roslin can be a soft touch. But she's also the one who looked at Apollo's analysis of "Sorry this is for the *species.* We have to leave the sublight ships behind.", and agreed in moments, even though it had to go against everything she wanted to do. There's steel in her when there needs to be.

Not giving any spoilers nor hinting at anything beyond this episode. I always got the impression that, this early on in the series, shipping of Adama and The President, had nothing to do with the writing or season planning. Put two other performers in those roles with the same scenes and lines and you wouldn't get any impressions of the sort. But these two performers together just have such phenomenal deliveries and chemistry that it becomes palpable.

The thing you need to remember about Starbuck is that she is a deeply flawed and complex person. She has amazing talents, she is brilliant, a genius pilot, an unconventional thinker and beautiful. However she is also self destructive, short tempered and arrogant (although to be fair her arrogance is usually justified). She is taken with Gaius because she can sense that he is bad for her, and deep down doesn't think she deserves to be with a good person like Lee.

Instead of “remembering” that after the 2nd episode, the thing to do is to gradually discover it as you watch the whole series. Please don’t give character analysis to reactors undoubtedly based on your general knowledge about them, that is informed by having already watched all seasons of the show. Let them form their own impressions.

Loving your reactions to this incredible show. it really does have one of the best casts in television history, top to bottom. Regarding Baltar's interaction with Starbuck in this episode, one thing to keep in mind is that although Baltar's obviously a very intelligent person, he's not much of an advance planner, as we've seen throughout the miniseries and the first two episodes. Instead, he's really good at bullshitting on the fly. So it's actually not usually the case that Gaius is acting with some sort of secret plan or purpose in mind. He's generally way too impulsive for that. Instead, most of the time, he's just scared or desperate (or, as with Starbuck here, horny), and he's just very good at making up a web of lies in the moment. Like the whole mess with the fake Cylon detector - that was a lie he made up in the spur of the moment during the miniseries to deal with an immediate problem, and now, in true pathological liar fashion, he's having to come up with more and more lies to fix the problems he created with his earlier lies. So in this episode, I don't think he went to play the card game because he had some clever plan or long game in mind. I think he saw an attractive woman, and being the sleazeball he is, decided to hit on her instead of work on his assigned task. (Especially since he, of course, has no idea how to actually build a functioning Cylon detector anyway.) Also, IMO Baltar's schtick works with Starbuck here because, although she's very smart in her own way (especially in the cockpit), she is also, like Baltar himself, impulsive to a fault. And for all Baltar's underlying sliminess, it's undeniable that he is an extremely good looking guy with charm to spare. They're two horny idiots in a horny idiot pod.

I really love how the actors playing Cylons in this series (Boomer and Six in particular) really get to exercise their acting chops by playing different copies of the same Cylon model that then get shaped in different ways by their individual experiences.

Baltar can't resist a challenge or a conquest...or a blonde, apparently. I think it was Baltar making sure Gaeta wouldn't be immediately looking over his shoulder...and I think Baltar likes to remind himself and everyone around him occasionally that he's the smartest person in the room. As for Starbuck, I saw her throwing it back in his face a little. 'You won the game, but out here I decide if I lose to you, and I don't like to lose.' Showed her control over him by accepting his cigar, and then blowing the smoke in his face. You can be nice to me, but I don't have to be nice to you.

You have a wild, emotional, deeply intense ride ahead of yourselves, full of subverted expectations, unexpected subplots; & characters you never expected to like becoming deeply meaningful for you! At least, that's how it was for me. My favorite character is Sharon-2, the one who's hooked up with Helo on Caprica. Be patient. Hopefully you'll learn why she is. Boomer's at war with herself. This episode started a theory in my head: that the Cylon "woke up" prematurely, & has spent the past few years "going native": falling in love with Boomer's friends, coming to admire the Commander; & wants to be human! I still hold to that head canon.

There was a recent interview with Sam Witwer (who plays crashdown - Boomer's new copilot and on a side note, also does a ton of voice acting for Star Wars) by Katee Sackhoff (Starbucks' actress who runs her own podcast now). Apparently, the producers often encouraged the cast to improvise some of their lines which is very unusual for most shows. Supposedly, Aaron Douglas who plays the Chief, was very good at improvising lines.
@kevenpinder7025
@kevenpinder7025 5 месяцев назад
Much later in the series, Douglas ad libbed a line that everyone loved, but it was a bit too Blue for SyFy, so it had to be cut. "Cally" ad libs a, soon to be iconic, line early in Season 2 that was so good it made Douglas break character.

IIRC, Tyron’s line in the miniseries at the end of his speech to his crew to motivate them as the war started, about hoping it was for actually for real, was improvised.

Well, Madam President is as soft as it gets... she used to be a teacher after all before ministry of education! Less facetiously, i'm loving your reactions, the writing of BSG is so good i have actually zero problems rewatching for the nth time. No spoilers here, but fandom has names for all duplicate characters but as the story progresses sometimes they change. But of course, you do not speak of the secret names to those who are not in the known. So far the names of the characters to not confuse, as far as you know them, are: Sharon: the copy down on Caprica with Helo, who you think "she is acting". Boomer: the sleeper cylon on board the Galactica, who found the water. Head 6: the copy of blonde cylon in the red dress whom only Baltar can see.

With younger people the main viewers now I tend to forget that most are not familiar with the "Monster of the Week" format to TV. Most young people are more familiar with these long arching storylines. I miss the TNG, XFiles and Quantum Leap shows that were "Monster of the Week" style. Having to watch something from show one to show 45 is work. Yet the long storyline gives a much better story and more satisfying. During the time of BSG the long format was becoming more popular and starting to become the standard. You can tell after season one they were struggling a bit with the direction but they keep going. This was a good initial try at making a good long story. This show is the product of Star Trek DS9 and Babylon 5 doing season long story arcs. It is going to be a struggle to get through but worth the view.

The mini-series established Gaius Baltar as an _actual frakking celebrity_ in Colonial society before the Cylons attacked: almost the first thing we saw of him was a televised interview (then immediately bedding the interviewer), and he was famous enough that a normie like Helo recognized him on sight (and believed that saving Baltar was worth his own life). There's no real comparator in modern US society, no public intellectual with that degree of star power - but you might try to imagine Baltar's role on pre-apocalypse Caprica as "Albert Einstein-Kardashian." Some of Baltar's interactions with other characters, especially here in the first season of the show, will just plain make more sense if you keep in mind that he's almost certainly the most famous person to escape the destruction of the Twelve Colonies.

This shows why folks at the level of General and Admiral are required to read a couple dozens books per year, obtain advanced degrees (PhD preferred) and spend LOTS of time analyzing historical events. Adama has the wisdom of that, coupled with decades of real world experience, as his offer to bring to the table. He and the president, AKA “Mom and Dad”, really pull their weight, they ARE the leaders we all deserve. Let’s just say, Starbuck’s got issues. Hell, her issues gots issues. Gaius? Well, um, yea, issues. Can Boomer escape her programming? I don’t know, can any of us? A show about ‘robots’ is really about being human. Or, are they robots?

This is one show where I don't think I could watch just the one episode at once. It's so well done that somehow simultaneously so much happens while also not enough. If it's at all able to fit your schedules I will ever so politely suggest you consider it. Episodes go by so fast and it's almost like you've adjusted to the pace of the show only for it to suddenly be over. I'm not going to pretend it doesn't benefit me if you do double episodes each week so I get to see you unpack two episodes worth of material and use both episodes information to try and answer all the questions the show presents. But this show was made for bingeing before that became a common thing to do. I'll leave that idea in your hands. I won't bring it up again. I've stated my case. Whatever happens I'll be with you for the next however many weeks. Between 35+ and 70+.

Anyone who hasn't *absolutely* needs to watch the Portlandia Battlestar Galactica skit

Looking up episode titles is fine, but looking up any kind of cast listing is really dangerous in terms of spoilers in this show.

Helo saw that copy of Six get shot, however he's only ever seen that one copy of her, so there was no real indication that she was a Cylon, only that she was working with them. As for Boomer, she is a Cylon. She has been programmed too, presumably had her real memories supressed, but that's what she is. As for the version on Caprica, it's probably best to think of her as Caprica-Sharon and the one on the Galactica as Boomer. Caprica-Sharon does seem to know things about Helo and the crew, but as of yet, it isn't clear exactly what her deal is.

I wish the water shortage carried on for a few more episodes before they found a new source. I know they still have to mine it, but it was just instantly solved, similar to an upcoming episode... Which is one of my favourite episodes.

There are a handful of episode titles that I'd consider spoilery if you saw them far enough in advance - maybe six or so. But just looking before each episode? I can only think of two that might be an issue, and I'd consider them pretty mild. You should ask someone you trust, though!

It’s interesting and maybe ironic to see you two enjoy a show by a guy who played a big part of deep space nine. One big reason gave bsg a chance was because I enjoyed what Ronald d Moore did with TNG and DS9. Before this show Ronald D Moore tried to make Star Trek Voyager look like this.

Moore wanted the tension between the Maqui crew and the Voyager crew to go through the entire first season but he was overridden by execs. He wanted to make it bumpy as hell.

So, about getting the stress ball for being able to cope with watching this show? Do I need to ship you some?

I think the acting DS9 and BSG is equally excellent...but the acting of the guest stars on DS9 makes me put it above BSG

Chief Galen Tyrol. Called "Chief" most of the time; Tyrol fairly rarely; Galen almost never.

I think you should watch the beginning of the original. I think you do get something extra from watching. To pick up on all the easter eggs and see all the things they've changed and all the things kept the same. Little things like the smoking or why the computers look so old. Also when you finish, please please, watch the Portlandia take on BSG.

Andor is the best TV scifi since BSG, and the best Star Wars since Empire Strikes Back. I for one second the above motion!

Andor is the BEST. Idk if it will ever make it as a reaction or not (maybe one day 🤞) But it is truly one of the best pieces of SW content to this day. With the GREATEST monologue done by Andy Serkis ever 🫡

@@KatAlysha I'm genuinely at the point where I don't even care if people react to it, as long as everyone who professes to care about SW has at least SEEN it lol. That said, you have some of the greatest TV sci-fi monologues ever coming up on your BSG journey too. Can't wait to see it all unfold for you, although if you don't have someone moderating your comments section, now is the time to start. This show needs zero spoilers and there are a lot of sick puppies out there!

@BaltimoreGunClubUK thankfully we have a couple of wonderful people helping moderate the comments!! I can't wait to see where BSG takes us. But on the topic of Andor? Correct. Just correct on all points. No notes. 10/10
