This battle as well as the attack on the tillium refinery were two of the most realistically done military assault plans I've ever see in film or TV. Perfect blends of deception, action, reaction, strategy and tactics. Whoever wrote these episodes could easily serve as a real-life military planner. Just a "4-D Chess" level of execution.

I don't think anyone from the show has ever confirmed it, but I agree. I've always been of the opinion that she knew it was poisoned. Ellen wasn't stupid, she knew the mob would come for her. And in walks Tigh with one cup, that he doesn't drink from. She offers to drink it rather than making him suggest it. It just felt so deliberate on her part. The Adama Maneuver is a brilliant concept and one of the most incredible moments in all of scifi. Imagine, almost, two Burj Khalifa' falling from the sky right on top of you. Pegasus entering the fight and it's eventual destruction was also a shocking series of events. The night this aired I watched that sequence, literally, 20 times in a row. EDIT: Now that this is listed I'll add a few more of my EP highlights. The look on Col. Tigh's face as he did what he did to Ellen. Shocked and disconnected at the same time. ...delivered with one eye. Hotdogs "Well, this outta be different." said with the calm professionalism you might expect from a real-world naval aviator. The look of fear on the Cylon contingents faces when not-Sharon delivers the news that the the battlestars arrived. Tom's "You sure have a flair for the dramatic". I think it was a fun nod to his portrayal of Apollo in the OG series. They could have easily killed S2 by devoting the entirety of it to New Caprica (see S2 of The Walking Dead). I was so relieved when the wrapped it up in 4 episodes.
@Codametal
@Codametal 7 месяцев назад
I also watched it a dozen times at first viewing. I think Star Wars EP 7 stole this idea for the Falcon leaving lightspeed in an atmosphere. The Falcon would have completely vaporized if it weren't for the scifantasy element of the franchise.

Ronald D. Moore very seriously considered letting the Galactica be destroyed and continuing the show with Lee and the Pegasus. He thought that it would shock the audience, make them feel that no one was safe and up end the entire show. In the original series the Pegasus only lasts 2 episodes and she disapears (seems destroyed but they changed a few lines to hint Pegasus had jumped away in the middle of the final barrage so they could bring her back later) so when Pegasus showed up in the reimagined series everyone asumed she would be destroyed in the Battle of the Resurrection ship.. then survived.. then in some later battle.. then survived, then in the captain hand.. then in the nuke Gina used.. every new episode in the forums and whatnot most people asumed the Pegasus would be destroyed next because "she didnt last long in the original".. Then she survived over a year until next season and this point (where her fate was similar to the original only with the destruction confirmed).. This is one of my favourite episodes of the entire series, so many moments of hope and triumph as well as moments of loss and despair. The "tribe" all being back together being a uplifting moment, while also planting the seeds of resentment with those who have been damaged and broken during the occupation and collaboration. This season is a great exploration of human nature and how we come to terms with ourselves and each other after deeply traumatic events. Every scene with Saul is just so masterful, he barely says anything the entire episode and has the most impact in displaying how broken all of these people are and the sacrifices they have made. As for the really cool space shit, the "Adama maneuver" is still one of the best moments of action in TV history. Just so cool, when they jump away and all the air and particles of dirt and dust get pulled up towards the vacuum left by Galactica. *chef's kiss

I love how Pegasus came in guns firing. One of the best scenes in the show, in my opinion. They had to get rid of Pegasus somehow, and that was a great way to doit! And the Adama Maneuver was quite impressive as well. All in all, this episode is one of my favorites.

What I love about that scene was how it lingers a bit too long on Galactica getting pounded. You start thinking “is this the end?”.. and then Pegasus swoops in. Chef’s kiss.

@@scoundrell Yes. It's one of the reason why I like that scene sooooo much. You wait, then bam, bam, bam, Pegasus hits a base star on it's center axis 3 times and blow it in two. Then rams another, and then one of the hangar bays takes another out.

I can't believe it's been almost 20 years since this episode first aired. Echoing what so many others have said, the Adama Maneuver is still one of the most badass, jaw-dropping things I've ever seen. It's so great to see your reaction to the 'Adama Maneuver', and I freaked out as much as you did when I saw it on TV at the time. That action was so badass, first with the decoys, then the jump into the atmosphere (falling like a rock), then launching the fighters and jumping back into space. Also the 'wind' through the vacuum above the people on the ground was just great. They really thought of everything in this series, including of course that Galactica would take some serious damage. First so close to a gravity source like the planet and then back into space after a few seconds. Logically, something would bend or tear here and there. Just as epic was the continuous fire from the Cylon baseships, the barrage from Galactica and finally the fiery arrival of Pegasus ... simply brilliantly constructed, the whole episode as well as the series as a whole. Because this moment was worked towards brilliantly for several episodes. For me, this episode was the absolute highlight of the season in terms of 'spaceshit', even if there are other great things to come. 👍😎

Best episode of the show, by far. One of the best episodes of all sci-fi shows. Especially the atmo jump scene. Only The Expanse and Babylon 5 have comparable moments. Whenever you were hard on Ellen, in the past, I was always thinking of her death here. Yeah, she was a difficult person, but she truly loved Tigh, was under very difficult circumstances and was one of the more interesting characters in the show. I always felt bad for her.

As amazing as the Adama maneuver is in this episode, and rightly so, the acting from Michael Hogan and Katee Sackoff are the stars of this episode. This was the biggest rollercoaster ride when I first saw this 20 odd years ago, and it still hits hard. Ellen’s death was, in its manner and effect, almost gutting. Followed so soon by the Adama Maneuver, when I fell into loud cheering and yelling, STILL makes me pump a fist. Arguably, this is one of the top three episodes, in my opinion. And you are right. The loss of any hero ship, even a supporting one, makes me misty. But the Pegasus, she went out with honor. And in the end, my heart remains with the Galactica, my favorite Old Lady.

The immovable object versus the unstoppable force. Pegasus slamming into the Base Star remains one of my favorite special effects shots of all time. Long comment, okay, lets touch on the obvious first. Absolutely outstanding camerawork on the action scenes, the color grading is great makes it feel very real, peoples, explosions, etc kicking up dust, absolutely amazing love every minute of it. The writing and the acting is gut-wrenching. Micheal Hogan is a stellar actor, I dont see him when I watch this show, I see Saul Tigh. That man loved Ellen more than anything in life, he stayed with her after all that shit she pulled on him he was in that relationship until the very end. The fact that he had to do it is heart braking, becasue he knew Sam was right. Someone will do it, most likely Connor ( who lost his family during the occupation ) will just turn around and kill her within a few hours or so. I felt for the man and his acting was brilliant. That moment between him and Adama was amazing, when he says not all of them Adama knew exactly who he was talking about, thats why he was keep looking at him. He knows Tigh more than anyone and he knew this will break him. Tigh was always my favourite character in this show from the moment he gives up his 15 minutes of break for Adama in the pilot episode. True friendship despite their flaws and decades old trust between them. Tigh's arc in this show is nothing short of extraordinary. Portrayed masterfully. Very nicely done for everyone involved. Let's talk about Lee Adama. Before I get into it I just want to say that I do like him as a person, not so much as an officer. Again, written really well and acted just as good by Jamie Bamber. He is insubordinate with often very little regard for higher authority. And Cain was right when she said it was a mistake to make him the Galactica's CAG with Adama in command but also its an end of the world scenario and they needed every pilot. He was already a captain so he was the obvious choice but again, he should not have been in a leadership position in the same chain of command as his dad. Now about Pegasus. Sacrificing the ship like that in the position they are in, he should've been shot. This is squarely on the Admiral's shoulder, he should not have put Lee in command in the first place. He proved it before that he cant think in a pragmatic way he is way too emotional, it was obvious that he will not leave his old man and his comrades behind to die. Admiral Adama knew he might not make it. He knew that to give the biggest chance for the fleet to survive they will need the Pegasus. It can train pilots, manufacture ammunition and small craft as well, a much more modern Battlestar equipped with better weaponry with a really powerful forward battery. Lee didnt even try to fight that battle. The Cylons had 4 ships, the Galactica had a chance against two, Pegasus could easily take the other two. He should've maneuver the ship to assist Galactica and together focus fire down the Basestars or just hold them off as long as the Galactica is able to jump away. We've seen the Pegasus fighting a minimum of 3 ( thats how much you can see on the DRADIS screen ) possibly 4 Basestars + their Raiders in the episode when Garner is the commander and Lee takes command of the Pegasus for the first time ( Season 2, Episode 17 "The Captain's Hand ). If he tried they might take some damage but both ship would've survived giving them a much better chance for survival. They are not in the position to sacrifice their most valuable ship without even trying to fight. Stupid decision he shouldve been shot or court-martiialed at the very minimum. But his dad is his CO so that didnt happen. All that being said its an outstanding fight scene and I love every second of this episode. On the other hand having been watched this show over 10 times I understand why they got rid of the Pegasus in light of what happens in the story later on and thats all I am going to say about this.
