After collecting the Bushtech Canopies Landcruiser 79series, it was now time for Roelf to pack it and see just how different it is to his Hilux setup. I take a walk around the cruiser with him and have a look at how the drawersystems work, the trundle drawer, its 2 National Luna Fridges, and rear seat delete setup too. Its quite an impressive setup and has a huge amount of room in comparison to a hilux with a canopy setup. We discuss how this could lead to potential overloading and put pressure on the GVM of the vehicle. Its a going to be a fun exercise and one epic trip! Now that we are packed it's time to hit the road!

Roan i like your packing style,But i like this Ausie approach more,its open to accessibility and it could be user frienly to setting up camp and settling down to enjoy camping.yours is still great though.

I agree with you Themba, its definitely more open. My setup felt very small and closed up after seeing the cruiser. It will come down to if its worth the extra cost for you at the end of the day. But if you have to compare the two setups in price its not a big differences its just that the tray obviously needs you to spend all the money in one shot; where as my setup you can do in little bits as the years go by.

PACKING TIP [for the Aussie full canopy style]: Pack all the food and cooking gear on the same side as the fridge. That way when cooking you do not have to keep going to the other side to grab items. It's all on the same side. Here in Australia, this is most common on the passenger side. Making it the safe side if wanting to do a quick stop by the roadside to make meals or coffee etc. The other side is usualy left for chairs, clothes, sleeping gear, tools etc. Most also set up a charging station for all electronic equipment on that side. The trundle tray (under the canopy) is used for recovery gear and vehicle spare parts - similar to what you've used it for, and the low storage after the rear wheels are used for dirty or wet gear, also popular use for recovery gear.

Now you'll probably understand why in Australia, a GVM upgrade is so popular on 4WDs. Our full canopy setup can take so much gear that, as you've said, can easily overload the vehicle. We've been spoilt in having so much space that we've grown accustomed to carrying a lot of gear. Which is not always a good thing.
@RoamOverlanding

Me and my dad wondered the other day when talking about GVM. Where can you get the upgrade done? From a legal perspective, I lnow Terrain tamer have the kits, but I've never heard anyone in ever do it. So that got us curious. Not sure what the traffic departments response would be or if they could help. 🤔 There's probably a forum discussion that I haven't read.
@fatmanoverlanding
@fatmanoverlanding 2 года назад
@@madcat4563 Not sure in Sth Africa, but here in Australia, pretty much every reputable suspension shop can do them. Shops like ARB, TJM & countless others. These businesses will even get the engineering certificate done for you as part of the deal (In Australia, any GVM upgrades needs to be engineer approved to be legal for use on public roads). So all you have to do is pick it up and drive it away when done.
@RoamOverlanding

It doesn't matter if it's a full canopy or a wagon setup, we Aussies tend to carry a lot of gear. These gear are either for self-sufficiency & survival, and/or for outdoor luxury. There are two main types of overlanders in Australia. One type are those who tour very remote areas where everything (incl. help) is far and few in-between. So bringing all your supplies is very important, and that incl. vehicle spare parts to do self-help/bush repairs on minor breakdowns. The other type are those who like to go glamping (ie. glamour camping). They like to bring all the comforts of home with them when touring. They don't want to be without, and sometimes that incl. coffee makers (sadly).

Great video comparison. Here in the States there has been a shift to open racks over the beds of pickup trucks from the covers but they are a still very popular. The Australian canopies are rare here but they look like they have ease of access and so much space. It will be great to see how these all work out in the bush and which ones excell in which conditions. Thanks for sharing 👍

On the tray/canopy you just need a rear ladder to access the Blade tent. That's what I do on my cruiser/canopy setup. I don't use a side ladder, my canopy has a rear ladder next to my spare tyre and that's what the missus and I use for access. If you keen to see my setup, check out EXPLORETRACKNZ channel or instagram account. What that canopy needs, is a pull out table on slides below the drawer. That makes the fridge/table great for lunch stops. Then my most favourite item in my canopy is my Travel buddy. A 12v oven that I use pretty much twice a day. Normally, warming some sausage rolls or pies for lunch and then for dinner I normally have vegetables in their around 3/4pm, which is normally cooked and ready by 6pm. I've also cooked roasts (beef/sheep) with vegetables in the oven.

Thanks for the Feedback Marcus! I believe Bushtech has worked on something similar now too, this whole canopy has had a million little redesigns since this trip, so I am keen to see how they keep evolving and progressing it. Its all very new in South Africa to have and use trays so our companies are just beginning their R&D Luckily there are great references out of Aus to look at. Will check your socials!

Surely the solution to the draw issue is to ask Bushtec to put both draws on the left side and then the right side only opens to access the stuff packed on the shelf?

Now I'm very curious for the end of trip conclusion on the tray & canopy setup. It's all trial and error as you go. It's all a lot higher to reach stuff as well especially slideout kitchens and tables. Upright fridges are becoming popular now too as they're lighter, and don't need a slide out or drop down slide.
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding 2 года назад
Yeah I have been thinking about it alot myself. I actually think there is a simplicity to the way the drawers are on the bushtech cruiser that I really like! With regards to fridge im seriously not a fan of the dropdowns, and strongly considering a standing fridge for the back if I ever went a tray. We really loved the fridge in the rear of the cab; so perhaps there's an idea and keep a heavy fridge out of the tray completely. Imagine the space then!

Please give a comparison of the fuel consumption of the 2 vehicles after the trip. Is the Cruiser a V8?
@RoamOverlanding

The cruiser is the V8; we basically had the 150kw 2.8 Hilux would 9km/L my 2.4 would do like 7.6km/L and the LC79 would do like 6.5km/L

Hey Adrian. Enjoying your content. I am considering buying a Hilux 2.4 GD6 4x4 similar to your vehicle. The vehicle will be a daily driver, camping and towing vehicle as well as overlanding vehicle. QUESTION: What is the average fuel consumption IN TOWN, when overlanding with fully loaded vehicle and when 4x4'ing in Low Range?? Does it have enough power / Torque to comfortably tow a average size off road trailer? (Reference to you towing that small Caravan). Is the 2.4 GD6 4x4 more than suitable, or would you suggest opting for the 2.8 GD6?? Your opinion and advice on the 2.4 GD6 will be appreciated!!
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding 2 года назад
Hey buddy, I love my little 2.4; but if I had the bucks at the time the 2.8 would have been the better call; the new 2.8 even more so! My fuel is consistently worse than the 2.8 because my vehicle has to work harder to get the job done, so especially if youre towing or heavily loaded you will see more benefit form the 2.8. HOWEVER If you cannot afford the 2.8 the 2.4 is absolutely fine and will do everything you need. Its just that the 2.8 would be nice.
