This is the fifth installment in my build series of the BB-63 USS Missouri - "Mighty Mo". In this video I am addressing the forward funnel or smokestack, with it's air defense station, gun directors etc.
Assembling the different subassemblies before attaching them to the superstructure.
The build is based on the 1/350 scale Hobbyboss 86516 kit with detail up sets from Pontos.

Love your work mate. As a relatively inexperienced ship modeller I really get a lot of guidence from your videos. Thanks mate, keep up the good work. 🙂

Kenneth, I have been watching this series on the BB-63 build, and I must say that the detail work on the superstructure, in this episode, is really excellent. The finished result has a very realistic appearance, and your skill in manipulating the small PE parts is a real inspiration. Best wishes for the holiday season.

Thanks for this Kenneth. Your PE work, as always, is amazing. Great advice on your build process. When it comes time to build mine (although it’s from a different manufacturer) I will have to try to follow your process. 👍

That is an amazing amount of detail. I'd forgotten that was 1/350 scale! You need to take an extended break to give your eyeball some recovery time. A very Merry Christmas to you and your family and a cheers to a prosperous New Year.
@NorwegianModellingBench
@NorwegianModellingBench 7 месяцев назад
Agreed, and it looks awesome in real life, the video doesn't really give it justice. Some of those pieces are really really tiny, so yes some eye recovery time is needed, on a 1/32 scale model that I am working on in parallel ;-) Have a great Holiday!

Amazing work. You make it look easy - even though it's the opposite with the PE.

Great build, and especially great camera work. You can really see the details well in these shots. I have 2 tips (which are probably too late but wahtever) from my own experience. 1. I've noticed in my own builds that cutting the PE on the cutting mat itself often caused some level of unintentional bending, especially on thin and/or longer and fragile parts. Because the material is flexible and gets pushed in by the pressure, the same way you used the knife handle to get a cruve on the railings for example. I i tried using a small glass panel, only about 15x25cm, from an old shellf as a cutting surface for my PE and its a noticeable improvement for me. Maybe my mat is softer and you don't have the same experience but i can recommend using something harder like glass, an old ceramic tile or something comparable. 2. Also some large sub assemblies, for example that radar dish, can be very finnicky to build off the frets and i have found (with exactly that radar dish) that leaving the outer ring on the PE sheet and building the whole thing on there is much easier because the ring is still held securely in place, doesn't slide around or fall out of your tweezers and its in the exact shape you want it to be.
@NorwegianModellingBench
@NorwegianModellingBench 7 месяцев назад
Thank you so much for that feedback! Those tips are really good. 1) The cutting mat I am using is bought by purpose, as it is quite hard and thin, so very little impact on the PE. But I always have my glass piece by my side ;-) 2) That could work out for some parts I guess, but it would be difficult to check if things align, getting access to glue parts and so on. But something I will keep in mind.
@chrisohara2325
@chrisohara2325 7 месяцев назад
Some good advice. Another benefit to a ceramic tile is the CA glue does not stick to it. So when you are constructing something (like the radar) you don’t destroy it when you go to pick it up. Ask me how I know. 🤪

Way awesome! Love all the detail in your build. Your PE work is excellent. I'd thing, given the detail and realism in your build, that signal flags might look good. Not many, but enough to send an appropriate message.

A fiddly paint detail might might spiff up the gas canisters - maybe paint the bracket /strap that holds the tanks - grey or black.

Thanks for the feedback, but I have already done so. The video does probably not show it very well, but I did paint them a dark grey color.

Gas bottle racks should match wall color. Screw on caps could be mismatched or black….maybe just shade diff. Lots for scale.
