"hiya! if you liked my talk, will you please stand with me at the premiere of our film in san francisco on february 1. you can see the trailer and get tickets here: standwithmemovie.com. compassion is not compassion without action! thank you for standing with me!"
After seeing a photo of two enslaved boys, and learning that "slavery did not end with Abraham Lincoln," then 8-year-old Vivienne Harr said: "Compassion is not compassion without action. We need to do something."
So, like any young child, she went with "the only business experience I had": a lemonade stand. But, Vivienne had a bigger vision than doing it for one day. She wanted to raise $100,000. So, she "made a stand" at her lemonade stand for 365 days straight, rain or shine, to "end child slavery." The world stood with her.
On day #52, New York Times, Pulitzer prize-winning columnist Nicholas Kristof retweeted Vivienne, and her moment became a movement. The New York Times, Bloomberg TV, The BBC World News, ABC News, NBC News, CBS News, Parenting Magazine, The New York Daily News, The Huffington Post, FOX, Yahoo News, MSN, AOL, Food & Wine, Town & Country, Real Simple-and media outlets across the country and around the world from Australia to Brazil to France to Hong Kong-have covered the Make a Stand movement. On day #173, Mayor Michael Bloomberg invited Vivienne to Times Square to sell her famous lemonade. It was there that she reached her goal-donating $101,320 to Not For Sale, a leading anti-slavery organization.
When her parents said: "You did it, honey. You're done," Vivienne said: "Is child slavery done? Then I am not done."
Vivienne continued her daily stand for a full 365 days, at which point she decided to bottle her organic, Fair Trade "lemon-aid"-becoming the first child in American history to bottle her lemonade-stand lemonade. She has won numerous awards for her work and is now an honorary member of the World Affairs Council.
Make a Stand became a new way of doing business: A for-profit Social Purpose Company striving to end child slavery in our lifetime. On November 12, 2013, The New York Times article "In a Lemonade Stand, The Transformation of a Corporation" positioned Vivienne's company as the poster child for social purpose companies in America. " If done right, [Make a Stand] could not just raise money to end child slavery, but perhaps create a role model for nonprofits and all types of businesses." Make a Stand Lemon-aid is now served in over 150 stores across the West Coast and as part of the foodservice programs at Apple, Twitter, Microsoft, Oracle, Intel, Salesforce, Netflix and Linkedin.
The children's book she illustrated with her mother will be published in December, 2013. A feature length-documentary film (titled: #standwithme) about Vivienne's story will be released in theaters across America on February 1, 2014. Vivienne will also host a new network TV series called "Kid MissionPossible," which will air in 2014.
Of their roughly 230 million users, Twitter gave Vivienne the honor of ringing the bell at their IPO in New York on November 7, 2013 because executives believed she is "symbolic of how Twitter can be used to change the world."
Miss Vivienne has decided to travel the world and continue to be a global voice against child slavery. "I want to end child slavery in my lifetime. I believe we can do it if we all stand together."
Vivienne Harr is 9 years old

Amazing little kid - so much heart and determination at such a young age. She is very lucky to have a family who support her - I know a lot of kids wouldn't have that - I know myself if I had announced I wanted to do something like that at her age my parents would have just patted me on the head and said that's nice dear now run along and play. My only hope for Vivienne - aside from hitting her goals - is that she doesn't take on so much that she burns out - with her business, the books, the talk shows, her show, public appearances, on top of school and having some form of social life and playtime of her own with her peers. It would be a shame if she misses out on her own childhood.

How wonderful can it be to see this amazing individual, who's passion led to the true potential of what every human could reach! This lovely girl can clearly change the world, has any of us can, like she said so brilliantly in her presentation. It is just a matter of belief, ambition and convictions, this is just so hard to understand with this pessimistic vision that we have of our own much too afraid to get into action selves. The people like Vivienne are definitily rare, thumbs up and encouragement for her cause from Canada! Keep going and dont stress yourself too much with the conferences, it was perfect!

Deeply moving illustration, of how desire, determination and love can be put to great use, to help other souls. Congratulations to Vivienne and her supporters for a job well done, and for showing us that great things are possible regardless of age.

Why does everything have to be a competition? Vivienne deserves an award, yes, but why do you have to discredit other people's awards in the process? And, seriously, you are criticizing a little girl who got shot in the head as not being deserving? Classy.

Hi Vivienne, what a great idea and I want to wish you from Germany all the continuing strength to carry on with your work - if I may call it that. Also a great thumbs up to your parents, that apparently raised you to be very compassionate - please stay that way, since our youth these days is more concerned about PS4, Wii or simliar.

She’s changed. I go to school with her and last year her parents got arrested for bringing alcohol for kids at one of her parties. She also made fun of people who had dyed hair before dying her own hair. She’s also dating the biggest wannabe thug ever.

This video was posted in 2013. Is she still an activist? What is she up to now? I would love to see her go on speaking tours and continue empowering others with her amazing story of compassion that requires action. WOW! She should get the Noble Peace Prize!

That's funny, I would have thought that the most important question is "how does the money made actually affect these children's lives"? It's one thing to make money and dump it into a charitable organization, but so many charitable organizations are corrupt and useless. What actual things are being done?

Well, you could try reading books like this: www.amazon.com/Terrify-No-More-Undercover-Operation-ebook/dp/product-description/B003MQN8BW in order to find out where donated money to fight slavery goes. The money cannot go to "buy" back the slaves because then the perpetrators simply go purchase some more at a far smaller price than the would be helper shells out. Abolitionist organizations use the money for many things ranging from educating people about the problem and helping them to recognize it if they run across it and then what to do about it which Not for Sale does; to funding full out rescue ops complete with prosecution of the perpetrators such as International Justice Missions does.
