Bear's Head - Hericium abietis (Sister species to Lion's Mane)

Delicious, beautiful, easy to ID, a great mushroom for beginner’s to learn!
Here in the PNW we’ve got a Hericium species we refer to as “Bear’s Head”, the Hericium abietis grows on conifers and looks nearly identical to a few ‘sister species’ that grow worldwide. You’ll hear many, many common names for Hericium species because of their popularity, unique shape and the fact that there are many different types in different global regions. The great thing is, all other species that look like this are also delicious and edible! So, even if you live outside of the PNW, you may be able to find Hericium as well, however the environment and tree it grows on may be different in your bioregion.

You are so lucky to live in a place like that. We have plenty of cool mushrooms down in east Texas where it's quite humid, combined with multiple trees, but for 3 months its wayyy too cold, and in the summer its generally too hot until we get to august. I actually just got into mushroom hunting recently and you've been a great help in my growing knowledge of them.

Awesome! 9:30 Lions Mane sold as a nootropic supplement. I've been going out picking bags of mushrooms every day because it's been raining constantly! Just boletes of course, that's all we pick, My wife came from Russia and we've been married 15 years and I'm finally picking mushrooms and not feeling like I need her to inspect whatever I pick. I really appreciate your video, if only there were more people out there (like you) but then again I would have a really tough time mushroom hunting! I'm a Japanese mushroom hunter and I'm a little surprised to know some US people enjoying Matsutake. As you know it is sold at high price such as 30 to 100USD per 100g. I know there are a little different(whitish and weak smell) but much more Matsutake in US than Janan. But I have assumed it is ignored because of the smell. I thought It marries Japanese taste and dishes but only Japanese like it. I like all the wild mushrooms and now we are having the season of Morel and Rhodophyllus clypeatus(plum mushroom) here. I hope I could visit US to enjoy wild mushrooms some day after my retirement. Is it possible to visit the forest for a foreign travelar?

Thanks for this! Inspired me to go out mushroom hunting for the first time yesterday. I'm in N. FL it's a little drier and not the mushroom paradise you are in. Wandered around for a couple hours with nothing to show for it except a few tiny puff balls and dried up tree mushrooms. Then, on the last part of the last path, found a small Lion's Mane, then a large one. A bit firmer than lobster, but delicious. Thought I felt a beneficial mental effect, but not as dramatic as the ones I grow in the 1/2 pint jars. Hope that wasn't just luck, will definitely go out again.
