I dig videos like these. I'm retired Military, basically shaved daily for 20 yrs. Completely blind to beard care so things like these and product reviews help w/ trying to have a healthy nice beard.
Love that you made this video, these are the types of questions I think a lot of experienced beardsman and analytical new beardsman alike will ask themselves! Dan always knocking it out of the park!
Great video & topic! My experience & tips would be to read the instructions on the bottle. Some washes say how long to leave it in. If they do not then Dan’s advice is spot on! Ty Dan & keep it up!
Thoose are really common experiences for me, i usually think "how long let the shampoo sit on my beard is good?" And experience really help me with the answers of each type, like double wash for example, sometimes i feel that sensation of heavy beard after the common wash and i learned i need a second one. There's no MUST DO or GOLD RULES, experience is the key, you need to know yourself. Great Dan 🤜🏼
Makes sense! I feel like a lot of us don't really think about it that much. I just go by how it feels and how much I scrubbed. Probably ends up being around 1-2 minutes, I just never thought about how long I let it sit.
I’ve recently thought of this and switched up my shower routine. I now lather my beard before anything, then wash my hair and face, then rinse my entire head. Good food-for-thought video, Dan!
I have always thought about how long as well and definitely give it at least 1 min. Going to change it to two minutes and see if any changes happen. Exfoliate every time I wash my beard daily. Ty Dan C appreciate all you do. Have an awesome day.
This is good to know. I always thought just apply it and work it through the beard and rinse it out. I’ll try letting it sit for a minute or 2 and see how it works for me.
Nice video Dan! State the purpose, cover it and be done. I find the time in beard depends on the viscosity of the oil that I had used and whether or not I needed a little butter or balm for styling.
Please expand on “too much of a good thing” regarding the time. “Listen to your beard” is a great tip. I never thought to apply it to washing. I apply product to wash my beard (was Baby Shampoo, now Goat’s Milk Soap Bar), lather up the rest of me, then rinse off, beard last. Total shower time 6 to 7 minutes; no idea how long beard wash is in place, nor do I think the effort to find out would be worthwhile. Although rinsing off beard first could be worthwhile.
There is a process that takes place when wash/soap is on your skin and hair. This is due to the pH level AND due to the ingredients (people always forget that part of the equation). The longer you leave the wash/soap on your beard, the more that process takes place. Just think of getting something in your eyes. It burns pretty good until you rinse it out. If you did not rinse it out, it would continue to burn. The same takes place with washing your beard. Washing is good, but too much exposure can be bad and wear away at the hair fibers and/or dry out your skin.
After a lot of try and test, this is my routine: Sundays: deep striping wash + conditioner Monday: Only conditioner Tuesday: Only water Wednesday: LCW + conditioner Thursdays: only water Friday: only LCW Saturday: only water And repeat.... Never let the products on my beard for more than 2 minutes… Only conditioner stays there for 4/5 minutes. That what works for me with the products I usually use, maybe if I go with different brand/product in the future, I'd have to make adjustments. It's like Dan says: “listen to your beard.”
Great video Dan! Ever since I read the bottle from beard octane saying to live it in for 1 min i been going by that for every company and it’s been doing great
I think the timing of this video is so funny. I was washing my beard last night as I always do and I thought to myself hmmm how long should I leave it in to really just get a good clean and all those other thoughts that follow so this now gives me a good base line and advice thanks Dan!
Thanks Dan, great video. Never thought about it in terms of time but I fall right where you said. I use hands then Chicago Comb for both wash and rinse.
Dan the man !! Great video ! I’ve never even thought about how long for the wash to be in , but like you said I have a feeling of the beard and have the know when it’s ready to rinse out Thanks for the info as always
Great video! The timeframe I leave it in changes based on which daily wash I'm using. Some are good in a minute, some I need 2 min to get the same results. I got them mixed up last night and had a heavy beard!
Great video Dan - a question I always was interested in but never thought to ask. Great validation of the process and timing q: is it the same time for a stripping wash/pine tar soap? q: does it impact the beard differently when applying directly to the beard versus rubbing in hands first? q: what about different viscosity beard washes (thin versus thick), does it make a difference in timing?
Thanks Donald! 1) Yes, for the most part. If anything it may be slightly shorter for stripping 2) Not that I am aware of 3) I have never noticed a difference with viscosity Great questions!
My rule of thought is after adding wash, I may brush my teeth or add shampoo to my head hair and that gives me the 2 minutes or scrub the rest of my face with a scrubber or comb
Great video Dan. Something I’ve always thought about it, but never spoke about it. Question; will you also use that “scrub” brush with the wash in, or not ?
Have to be honest, when I saw you post this video, I thought you were updating an older/previous video you've done as I could have sworn you covered this topic before lol. We always suggest to give it around two (2) minutes for the product to work throughout your beard before rinsing out. But as always, everyone's beard is different (thin/coarse/thick) so it's best to test out what works best for your particular beard type. Lastly, every beard wash type/brand is different, so also take that into consideration if switching up products, as different washes have different pH's! Great video...that I thought you already made 😂 ~joe
Another great video Dan! I’ve never really thought about this before either! Lol wild. I know I must have the beard wash in my beard for at least a min and a half with the scrubbing and all. I’ll try letting it sit for 30 seconds and see how that goes. You know me, I’m always down to try a new grooming technique. Kind of a side note. I’ve noticed that leaving the container in my beard for a whole 10 min works best. Been doing that for almost 2 years now. After every other wash of course. 👊🤘
New to your channel. I agree with you on washing your beard daily. I have heard a number of opinions that say daily washing is not good as it strips away to much of the natural oils. However I have tried skipping a day and don’t like it, I can smell my beard and it needs to be cleaned daily. I have always been a minimalist using the same body wash for my beard and then following up with a good beard oil, that’s it. Been my daily routine for over 30 years. But as of lately I feel as though my beard is feeling dry so not sure if it’s an aging thing or what. I am now considering adding a butter in the evening to try and help soften and add more moisture to my beard. I know you are a big fan of beard wash so I may need to compare the ingredients and think about adding that as well.
I always wash by hair, then beard, then body. Then rinse off in that order. I'll have to pay more attention to the timing and see what happens... Thanks again Dan!
I try to leave the shampoo in my beard for 4 to 5 minutes. For some reason I've always thought you said that somewhere but I could be wrong. As far as conditioner goes I usually don't leave it in very long and I am going to change that.
I make sure to really scrub the skin under the beard hair and work my way to the end of the hairs. I do this 3-5 times which takes me about a minute, minute and a half. After rinsing it out, I throw in conditioner and leave it in while cleaning up the rest of me. Then rinse the conditioner out after I've rinsed off completely.
Apparently I need to be doing more for my beard in the shower. I throw that shampoo in and immediately wash it out. No scrub brush or comb. My beard probably isn’t happy with me now that it’s watched this video and realizes it’s been neglected. On a side note I listen to my beard all the time, unfortunately the only time it speaks is when I floss a moustache hair into my tooth.
What I find is if I use too much or leave it in for too long then the hair may be clean but it feels stickier than it should be. Could be different for everybody usually for me that means just under a minute or so
Hey man I'm new to the channel as well as the topic of growing beard. I want to start beard brushing as i have grown my beard for 4.5 weeks and it's very messy now. Can you suggest me a good beard brushing tutorial video ?( mainly I don't know about the hair of neck area below jawline and chin , should i brush it upwards or downwards ? )
Ok, I'm not crazy for thinking you can feel the degree of cleanliness. An in and out kinda wash doesn't have the same conditioning effect that a little time does imo.
I just recently started to leave my face wash on for a min and then was like, oh, I should do this with my beard wash! I'm guessing this works the same when using a stripping bar soap?

I wash my beard about 5 days a week, I use about a dime size amount of wash in my beard but it doesn't lather up the first time, I rinse it, sometimes it doesn't lather up the second time, it's not until the 3rd time do I see it ok lather up, the only thing I use is beard oil in the morning, and once in a while beard butter, the length of my beard is about 5 months growth, sometimes it just doesn't feel clean unless I do this 3 times
In the beginning I did not, but for years I have made several videos about the change and encouraging the daily washing. Here is a general explanation of why: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Sb4T3V1LWnE.htmlsi=WuUuOPzDWQgsMtTM Short version: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t10LBFq_1U4.htmlsi=Bnk7ugElkGhKMTat One more on the topic: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-v27lCupyyLs.htmlsi=dv-cjM-Ic9_2s3dX
Hey Dan C, great video. I'm pretty much a year into my beard journey, and my goal is to grow a long beard similar to yours. My question to you is, how do you sleep with such a long beard? Do you ever accidently tug on it when rolling over? Do you ever get it caught in a zipper on a jacket? I have noticed with my year long beard that I am staring to tug on it a bit when rolling over during the night. Many thanks, Dan B 👍
I have one hand but i want to use Amish beard oil .How should i apply it ? Can you explain how or do you have a video that would help me since i have only one hand
I am actually working on a one hand video currently, stay tuned! The key is getting the oil to the beard and massaging in. Luckily there are different methods you can use. Dropper top to the beard. Oil in palm and apply to the outside of the beard and then massage in.
I know that the shampoo for my head hair and soap for my face and ears end up flowing into my beard when I rinse. I'm wondering about the order you wash your face, head hair, and beard, if it matters.
So Dan, if I like to use beard wash and beard wash bars (not the stripping soap bars), should I alternate it daily or does it really matter? Also, with the beard wash bars, does the same principle apply?
I use Viking Revolution once a week or two as a stripping wash, but it never seems to totally rinse out like my daily use of Beard Octane beard wash. Why is that?
@@DanCBeardedhey brother, I just spent about an hour looking through your videos trying to see if you advise any brand of stripping wash. I couldn't find any besides beard soaps. Can you please point me in the right? direction?
The only problem is how accurate are all instructions. Example to prove the point: look at most beard oil bottle instructions. "apply several drops of oil to your hand" or replace "several drops" with "2-6" or anything similar. Well if I apply 6 drops of beard oil... that will cover my mustache lol so the instructions are not always the best source, unfortunately
Wasup man could u give me the best beard oils to use ? Kinda specifically for growth ? I’m 19 and got good genes and pretty solid beard so far just need some more time for the hair on my cheeks to thicken up
@christiantrent231 I do not recommend yes or no on that one. It’s a really personal situation. Here is a video to help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d7WA-dMaMC4.htmlsi=koNGpKMl2W-g6ldK
When I feel it needs a little bit more cleaning as products build up I simply apply it, brush my teeth while the shampoo does it's job and when I am done with my teeth I rinse the wash or shampoo out of the Beard. Works great and keeps the toothpaste from working in the Beard too
Okay sweety pie I hate to put u on the spot cause it pains my tiny little heart to not only bring u joy but whatcha'll think of Scuba doing worlds cheapest oil review and is he correct or just projecting? Oh snap 🫰🙄 lol😂
Out of respect, let's keep it to Dan C for the name. I have not watched the video you are referring to and have not tried that oil, so I do not have an opinion or judgment there.
