A couple years ago when I started growing a beard I was repeatedly told, by experienced beardsmen, to only wash once a week. To also have co-washing apart of my routine. I came across your channel and watched some videos about how conditioner and shampoo works. I stop co-washing then and washed as needed instead of once a week. Started doing the routines and had major differences in my beard. The routines, keeping it clean, and staying hydrated even increased my rate of growth, if I stay on top of it.
Hydrating my beard has tremendously increased growth for me as well! I use Dan’s before bed routine… for about a month or so now… and that alone has tremendously improved my beard even more.
cool I just hoped out of the shower about an hour ago said drink water 🚰 but I did not drink water like I did when I was in Florida but I will do that and Dan said if are when you are taking a shower turn on the cold water I'm in Ohio so when I was in the shower 🚿 I I wanted to try the cold method because Dan said when you use warm water it makes your beard ugly so use 🥶 water and turn it little by little too the cold setting so get use to the cold little by little it helps the blood flow to the beard and he said it helps like last year I tried the cold shower method same thing to the body.
@@DanCBearded hello Dan I watched your video on how to do the cold 🥶 shower 🚿/beard wash and drink water and how much did you say to drink for the day oh and I just watched the video on Do NOT CO-WASH oh I also seen the one on do not use beard guyz stuff and I watched the one on the trusted Amish I have been watching you for a long time when the beard thing was in then I shaved it off because when I went to the barber they kept messing up my beard so I just shaved it off and started over again I have the dime bag look right now excuse me I have a redich brown beard!..!, I forget what music you said you listen to but dime bag is the guitarist from Pantera.
For the first year of so of my beard journey I was using way too much product, using them too often and using them wrong. After finding your channel I've gotten into a routine that makes my beard feel the best it can. I used to scrub conditioner into the skin because I was told it had some cleaning properties as well and that's how I should co-wash. Thank you so much for your videos and your research. You have changed my beard and my life!
In my experience is good to take notes from others but also is important to try different methods for yourself and log it down which way works that give you good results
I learned what shampoos and conditioners do while learning about hair care, and was always so bewildered by every RU-vidr recommended co-washing. Clogging up your hair ON YOUR FACE? It made no sense to me, but figured if the trusted teacher does it, it’s gotta be ok. Thanks for correcting yourself in true academic/scientific fashion; it’s a good show of character and care
I appreciate that, thank you. I have no problem admitting when I have changed or if I was flat wrong (I have another video titled “I was wrong!). Even though many like to criticize change, I’m okay with that
I started my beard journey about 1 1/2 years ago, I've always used oil and butter at a minimum, recently started balm to tame my sides (I used to trim my sides short, but that doesn't look right the longer my beard gets.) I have only washed and conditioned once a week with 6 rinse days. At day 4 and 5 my beard seems to be at it peak of awesomeness. I only discovered your channel a few days ago, and feel like I have already learned so much, and my beard already seems to be doing better implementing some of your advice. I am not quite on board with washing every day. But I really want to thank for doing what you do on youtube!
Three years ago (in the beginning), I tried co-washing for about a week and didn't like how my beard felt. It felt over conditioned, so I stopped and never went back. Because of the subtle differences in beards, your intuition plays a huge part in what works for your beard. Listen and your beard will tell you.
I do not use conditioner at all. After some research when products weren't working for me, I found I have low porosity hairs. My hairs do not accept any product unless opened up with some form of heat. When I use heat it is an amazing difference. It was also suggested not to use conditioner as well. My beard has never felt better. Great video! Keep Bearding Dan!
Tried co-washing in the beginning and it just felt weird. Then this great guy named Dan C had this video and in it he said something along the lines of "figure out what works for you." I took that advice. I stopped co-washing and almost instantly felt better about my beard. Best beard advice I've ever taken. Thanks Dan.
Totally agree. What I’ve found for me, is that it’s very important to go mild on all my products, if that makes sense. Nothing too strong, thick, heavy. As you know, oils and washes and butters etc vary so much in those regards. Once I went with a milder lineup I really noticed a huge difference in the health of my hair. Appreciate your insight!
Hey Dan C, New to products and proper beard care. I have a short to medium beard but never cared for it properly and I found your channel and have gained so much knowledge and started taking care of my beard way better and OH MAH GOD!!! The difference is amazing and night and day difference!! Thank you for you vast knowledge and info. Thank you for your positivity
I was rarely doing a co-wash, but this video reminded me about washing when using wax. I typically put balm in my beard daily to help with styling for the workplace and I am not washing everyday. Thank you for the reminder that washing a waxed beard is just as important as washing a dirty beard.
After a certain conditioner changed their formula, I stopped cowashing. As much as I miss that conditioner, it was for the better. The positive effects of cowashing eventually get outpaced by the heavy coated feeling on the beard. Looking back a year + later, I I feel grossed out that I ever cowashed.
I wash daily by alternating liquid wash & bar soap... I condition once a week.. "Rinse" days are non-existent for me as I hate not knowing all the previous product is off my face & beard.. Thank you Dan for all that you do.. 🙏🙏
Thank you for telling us, I came across your vids in my journey to take better care of my beard and I remember doing co-washing from your channel. So I think it's cool to hear you say to stop doing that and to do it a better way. This helps a lot. Thank you very much. Also, is there a way to grow out my beard longer, or does it depend on genetics? Just been wondering that for a while.
I used to cowash a few times a week. Now I only use conditioner in the shower just a few days a week. I use more leave-in conditioners the days I don’t use it in the shower or on rinse days. I have noticed a huge difference in how my beard styles and an overall feel. I have spent a lot of money on just conditioner because I was using twice as much compared to beard wash. When I stopped using it as much I noticed how much longer it lasts!! Using less is more! Great advice DCB!!! 👍🏻
Absolutely! I have had a few criticize me (harshly lol) today for “cheating them” with saying something different before. All I can do is being honest and open. I change and I’m happy to share those experiences.
I just grew out my beard again after a long hiatus with only an epic stash. I am now 5 weeks into the regrow and it’s nice and full. Just did my first gentle beard trim a few days ago. Morning routine: wash face with King C. Gillette beard and face wash. Apply beard oil. Brush. Apply lotion type beard balm. Brush. Evening routine: wash face with gentle Proraso beard wash. Apply beard butter. Brush. Maybe it’s overkill but my beard feels, smells great and is soft.
I support this 100%. I stopped co-washing months ago before I even saw this video. I got in a routine of water only one day, wash and conditioner next day. After I did that a while, I started getting a feel when it needed a wash, and I didn't need conditioner unless I needed a wash. Also, beard oil got too expensive for this length. I got some 100% pure golden jojoba, and use that between washes. I only use that when I need to straighten or when it gets too dry.
I"ve gone a step further and I will wash and not use a conditioner. Granted, I do use a butter after the shower. But I've found that skipping the conditioner seems to allow the butter to really soak in and work better. I guess I am still conditioning, just not with a traditional conditioner.
I’ll tell you I don’t miss my old beard and those old days one iota. Until January of this year, I used a stripping bar every four days and I used a hair conditioner every day. I also used balm when I should’ve been using butter. In addition, I only used oil on the wash days. My beard looked terrible just about every day. I never even heard the term Cowash until late last year but will tell you l never use beard conditioner now unless I am doing a stripping wash so about every 2 weeks. The butter at night makes my beard stay tangle free and healthy so no need for beard conditioner. So glad I started doing things right and no longer have clogged pores and a weak dull beard.
This is really informative. I didn't realise growing a beard was such a massive science. Thanks for the informative videos. You truly are the beard guru 🙏
I think it just depends on your beard type. I've tried it all. My beard is thick and wavy and tends to be very dry. Co washing 3 to 4 days a week and washing only once a week works best for me. Great video as always though Dan!
Good to hear. I, too started this about a year ago. Especially noticing my beard doesn’t feel right and right inside feels greasy, which I think it’s due to my oily skin. So, stopping co-wash is a game changer. Like you said. My beard feels lighter and feels right. No greasiness. I hope beard companies change all that marketing term. Great video Dan! 👌🏻
Mmm. I know head hair is different. But hair stylists will always recommend not shampooing daily. But would say you can co wash on non shampoo days.. Always figured the logic made sense on beard. And in my experience it's been good. All for trying
Just got home from working all day and I washed my medium length beard then did conditioner and it helped it out a lot usually I didn't know when to use conditioner I just did every once and a while I mainly just used beard wash every day im ocd about the beard being clean so I just wash it everyday and use beard oil about 2 times a day and I was having a lot of tangling and breakage and hair falling out alot I think this routine you shared will help save my beard thank dan I watch alot of you videos brother you love to help Inform us men about how to do it right for the sake of our looks and health
That was one piece of advice I never followed. It didn't make sense and I did it once to see and it felt bad. So glad you mentioned locking in the bad things, that is why cowashing made no sense to me.
I never really cowashed, because I never really liked conditioner. However, the bigger my beard gets, the more I think I need to condition, but I can’t imagine just using conditioner. I love how my beard feels after a good wash!
I stopped co-washing about 6-7 months ago. Makes a huge difference in the feeling of my beard. I usually pair the wash and conditioner 1-2x a week. Feels great!
Started the beard December ‘23 and located you in January. Been following your advice plus recommendations, and very pleased with the results on this old gray beard! Thanks for clarifying what the co-wash is. Been over fifty years since this much hair has been in this face and only condition after a wash, but I do have one question. I use the “Aussie 3 Minute Moist”brand conditioner which I use on the head hair. Can that be used in the beard or do I need an actual beard conditioner? Been a whole lot of changes since that 70’s..! Thanks for all your hard work and research. LT
As much as I love conditioner I've recently stopped using it. I found that oil and butter absorb much more completely and leave me with a much more natural feel. Always appreciate the advice Dan.
Good stuff, something to think about and try out for sure. A question and a comment/request come to mind: (1) So, on the days that I co-washed only, if I am skipping that, how do I de-tangle the beard? (2) I exercise by swimming 30 minutes each day. How about a video about care for the beard before and after exposing it to pool chemicals? Thanks!
@@DanCBearded thanks for the quick reply, I will take a look at both! --- update, I looked at the video, good stuff .... was doing most of that, except just 'loading' the beard with cold, fresh water prior to my swim, not using any oil beforehand ... will add to the routine.
Hey Dan! Full transparency, I was definitely one of the guys who was like “nope, I’m sticking to my cowash!” when I watched this video. I would wash/condition once a week and co-wash twice a week with fables CBD co-wash. I stuck with this method as I have a sedentary lifestyle and believed limiting the washes were aiding in my growth. I decided to try wash/condition 3 days a week for a month to see if it would be worth switching up my routine. I can honestly say my beard feels a lot better. It’s much easier to manage and I notice much less shedding while combing and applying heat. Probably because my beard had wax and butter in it that was making grooming more challenging. My only regret is not switching up my routine sooner but I’m glad I took a chance with your advice, thanks so much for all you do!
I never truly used it. I just used a stripping wash one time a week with a conditioner after, and a non stripping wash the other days for grime, dirt, what have you as needed.
Wow my mind is blown I’ve been watching your videos now for a few years and I would co-wash 4 to 5 times a week but I will definitely change up my routine because I trust your word and ever since I’ve been watching your videos and taking your suggestions my beard and skin has been so healthy.
I appreciate this video topic. I switched to just using conditioner 1-2x a week with washing and every time I use my pine tar soap to strip my beard every other week. With the virus still around I am washing every day I am around people. My change in 2022 was my washing and conditioning schedule and I stopped using butter from May - September. Mt beard is styling well with just oil and limiting the conditioning
I've had doubt about the co washing routine, my beard just never felt as good as after a wash day. Thanks for this video. Definitely dropping the co wash days.
Cool !! This video describes my routine for about 1 year now !! I stopped cowashing last year and now I wash when I need and always use a conditioner after I Wash. Sometimes I have I only rinse and I never use Conditioner alone. I sometimes wash alone only If I use Balm after because I don't think it's necessary to over conditioned my beard. Thanks for the video!!
I bought a product that's called a cowash and I've been using it off and on for a little over a month. I honestly don't see any difference in my beard. It just basically gives me another product to use in rotation with other beard washes.
Gave it a try, now i use a gentler wash daily with cowash and I do a butter at night and a leave in conditioner once a week ...my beard definitely is soft and looking good...
Hey, Dan. I'm new to proper beard care and have benefited a lot already from a few pieces of your advice. The beard wash I use is labeled as a beard wash+softener. I've used it each day for almost a week and my beard feels great! I can't tell if that is the same type of product you mentioned in this video, the kind that you say can't do the job of both cleaning and conditioning the beard. The product is from Cremo and is bourbon vanilla scented, if that helps.
Interesting. I've seen your videos on the Cremo beard oil and why you found it unsatisfactory. The Cremo beard wash/conditioner was similarly unsatisfactory to you?
I've dropped co-washing about 6 months ago. I definitely have felt a difference in my beard. It's really does make a difference with always washing first before conditioner. Couldn't agree more with this video Dan! 👏
Dan i totally agree I stopped Co-Washing about 4 months ago its made a Huge Difference Once again Thank You for the Educational and Informative Videos Keep Up the Good Work for our Bearded Community 👍
Great video Dan!!! I stopped “co-washing” about a year ago shortly after I watched your simplified wash routine video. I started doing the same simple every other day wash routine followed by a water rinse only day and my beard is sooooooooo much healthier, with less split ends, less tangles and just overall better looking and easier to style. 💯 I’m always trying new things. I have tried every combination of washing, conditioning, oiling buttering. And I think I finally have it down. With a BIG thanks to all your advise. 💯 Thanks Dan! You rock!! 👊🤘
The thought of doing a conditioner only procedure never occurred to me. Then when I heard it somewhere, I thought it was odd. This may have been because I was washing and conditioning every day, due to get dirty, so it didn't make sense to me to condition it without washing it first. Now I know that was even too much, so now it is every other day.
Thank you Dan for your commitment to the bearded community. Question: since you’re advising us no longer to co-wash. I’ve been using that as part of my weekly routine. I will try not to use it for a week or so. Can I use Every man Jack beard and face wash daily? It has on the label that it’s GENTLE. (I did order the Bearded Mack beard solid bar.)
I've been trying many things but what i do now and what i think works the best for me is washing+conditioner 3/4 times a week and i do that before going to sleep but i have a question because i dont know if its wrong but in the morning i only use water on my beard and then apply beard oil but ive heard that you are supposed to wash beard before using beard oil and i wonder if its okay to use beard oil every day in the morning with using only water beforehand my beard feels and looks really good in my opinion but i wonder if it could be better (i wanted to try co-washing but after ur video i realised that i shouldnt so thanks haha)
I agree! I don't co-wash, because the idea never made sense to me. I wash my beard daily with a beard wash and then put conditioner in after washing every other day.
Same reasons I don't use "2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner" for my head hair. You can't cleanse and condition in one step and I wish more shampoo/condition makers would get on board with that. Options for men's separate shampoo and conditioner are VERY limited.
Thanks for the info Dan. I stopped co-washing on a whim about a month ago just to try it. I don’t really notice a difference in benefits with my beard, just not going through as much conditioner. I have an office job so I do a couple rinse days (previously co-wash days) and a couple wash/conditioner days, with a pine tar soap reset once a week and it works for my beard.
Funny enough I just tried doing wash and conditioner most every day. I was doing wash 1-2 times a week, conditioner every day I got the Live Bearded sample pack that comes with wash and conditioner, and used a different scent each day trying it out. My beard and face felt a ton better after going through that sample pack, so I’ll take this video as a confirmation I was doing something right!
Thanks Dan, I definitely agree with you based on my own experiences. I used to co-wash, but was always disappointed because the results never matched what the videos said were the benefits. So I just stopped. Now I'll condition maybe once a week, sometimes twice, and always after shampooing. If, after just a rinse in the shower, I feel my beard needs it post oil and blowdry, I'll put in a little leave-in conditioner from Beard Octane, but that is a fairly rare event too.
Dan…I use a Coconut oil based Co-Wash with a Conditioner for white hair additive every other day for the past 10 years, when I let my beard grow out. As I understand it, using Co-Wash helps relax the curl in a beard and also does not strip the natural oils from the beard like regular hair shampoo. What beard wash or shampoo do you recommend to use during your challenge?
My two favorites would be: LCW by Beard Octane= tinyurl.com/yc7hwf83 * DANC10 = 10% off or Solid beard wash bar by Bearded Mack= tinyurl.com/4ky75tkn * DANC = 15% off If you wanted to stick with in stores, Duke Cannon has a decent daily wash
Dan I never kept a beard long I kept it short for the toughest part of the winter My face got itchy and the hair was rough and LV hated it Thanks to you and my son he introduced me to beard products and your Command center I have enjoyed a fairly long and soft beard Again thanks much appreciated
Glad to see this video. I stopped co-washing during my yeard and felt my beard felt healthier only using it after washing first. Keep up the good work Dan as you videos definitely help us out here.
I haven't used conditioner in quite a while, even after shampooing every other day. I've also upped my use of oil to about one and a half droppers, seems to be working well for me.
I hear ya on those rinse days. I discovered a wash cycle that works for me: Day 1: wash and co-wash Days 2 and 3, rinse Repeat And so far I haven't noticed or felt anything negative. Not to say that it's the perfect routine though lol.
I did “co-wash” before cause I didn’t need to wash it everyday; didn’t get all hot and sweaty (worked inside on the phone) ; . Looks like I’ll be washing more often now, of course conditioner still in use keeping me nice and smooth.
I haven’t used conditioner in a while now, I wash my beard several times a week. I take my showers at night and I follow the shower with beard butter, no oil just butter. I rinse in the morning followed by oil. This has really worked for my beard
Co-washing didn’t work for me. When my beard was shorter I’d only try it once or twice a week. As my beard got longer I’ve just done a wash and conditioner. I stopped the co-washing about 3 years ago.
I like co-wash days but Im still new-ish to all this so I’ll try it for a while and let you know how it changes, I feel like you had a lot of good points like you’re locking in all that wax and dirt if you don’t wash it first, I never thought of it that way so I’ll give it a shot :)
@@DanCBearded I completely agree! Conditioner is great to kinda get your beard ready to detangle so that you can then comb beard oil through. A few years back I was completely ignorant to beard washes, conditioners, and oils, balms, etc. Once I started learning though it’s changed my life tremendously. Simply from using product in my beard with no trimming, I’ve had a few people ask who cuts my beard and then they’re shocked when I say either, “I cut it myself” or “I haven’t cut it at all”. Lol.
I used to co-wash about three times a week but after your previous video about this i stopped and now i wash+condition on sundays and wednesdays and all other days i just rinse with some warm water and my beard is thanking me for it! (And i’m thanking you)
I will definitely try it for a week, I co-wash every morning in the shower because my beard is course and curly but if you say it’s not helping I need to know because beard conditioner isn’t cheap, will revert back in a couple weeks with result, thanks👍🏽
I use professional shampoo and used for head hair (not recommended for everyone). I then use argan oil rather than beard oil for a heat protectant before I blow out my beard and straighten it. My beard is amazingly soft and silky. I can also leave in the argan oil in the beard and just use my hands to style it and leave the waves in it.
When I first started my beard journey and got into trying all the different products out there I tried doing a “co-wash” cycle. It only took a week of that to quickly discover that co-washing was not for me. My skin broke out and my beard just felt funky overall. Take Dans advice and go a week without, I agree you will notice a positive result. Conditioner is the product that I use the least in my routine. I use butter daily but only use conditioner typically once a week. Too much conditioner I’ve found has negative effects. Yet another thing Ive learned from this channel.
Just bought a conditioner from Whiskeynhardtack and they retired so I can't get a wash to go with it! They're making an announcement in a few days though, so maybe I'll get to after all
Ok need your advice. I started growing a beard last November and recently found your channel. What brand products do you recommend as of today. So many videos and I know things change and your opinion changes.
Hey Christian, no products have really changed for me. Just how I use them. If you are asking in general, I use: beard oil, butter, wash, conditioner. Those are my main ones. I hope that helps!
It is labeled a conditioning wash, not a conditioner wash. Very different things. Ingredients like oils and butters have conditioning properties. The English language doesn’t make it easy on us. LCW is a daily/gentle beard wash
Thank you Dan! As usual very educational and enlightening. A question for you. If I use oil after a shower and later before bed work some beard butter through the beard. Would you say that I the day after need to wash it out or that it works with just having a rinse day? A year or so ago I cut down the wash days as I felt it dried out the skin and beard. I felt it did really good but I got to wondering if I actually need to wash out the oil and butter.
@@DanCBearded Ah, perfect! I use butter before bed every evening but thankfully it doesn’t have wax. Sadly there’s not many beard butters to get here so I still only have tried one brand. It’s very good though but what do I know having only tried that one but in different scents. Thank you Dan, for the reply and advice.
I've only been growing a beard for about 10 weeks, but I've been cowashing about 2/3 of my showers. I've been terrified of drying out my beard because an itchy face is what has always made me shave my beard off after about 4 weeks of trying to grow a beard, but I'm gonna give this a try.
I do a deep clean, condition and styling once or twice a week. Mostly rinse every day in the shower. Even just wetting it daily in the shower just gets ot clean enough.
Live and learn. People who use products labeled as Cowash , enjoy the extra time in shower it t takes trying to fully rinse the product out of their beard and off of the skin. Because the beard never feels as good as when a stripping wash and separate conditioner are used
I've yet to start using conditioner, haven't found a reason for it yet personally. I do however love using beard wash, as it makes my beard feel softer, lighter, and it just makes the hairs look cleaner, even bringing out some of the color in it. I normally just use a beard wash followed by oil every other day, and on days that I don't use a beard wash I do a rinse. Maybe one day I'll give conditioner a try, it just hasn't felt like a necessity yet.
New subscriber here. Beard for 45 years but always kept short. Growing out now. Can you point me to a tutorial you’ve done? I shower at night. Do I oil and butter at night and then again in morning? Thanks
Hey! Welcome to the channel 🤝 I would oil and butter at night, and then rinse out thoroughly in the morning, and then go just oil in the morning. Personal preference though
I remember the fist time i got serious about a beard i used to co wash all the time and i thought it was helping my beard. I figured out it was probably doing more harm then good im not using conditioner at this point because my beard is too short i just started growing it again for no shave November now its December and im keeping the beard I'm not going to use conditioner till i can comb my beard and i will always wash before hand.
Great and informative video! I've been cowashing since I saw one of your original videos and I'll try cutting it out for a bit to see the difference. What do you recommend as a routine now? Wash & condition a few times a week and rinse the others? Just wash as needed after sweating? I like to keep consistent overall
