Keep your mind on the back end of the shot & stop worrying about Aiming. Stop Aiming, focus on execution & the arrow will find its way.

Great advice. To beat target panic I did something similar, except I shot from 20 yards, and made my dot so big I couldn't miss. I had to get used to floating in that dot and executing a strong shot. Over the course of several months I made the dot smaller and smaller. Now I am able to shoot 52-57x on the 5 spot pretty consistently. I really had to retrain my mind and teach it was okay to have pin movement and okay to float. In addition to that I was learning a hinge at the same time. I was shooting 100+ shots a day aiming at the giant spot.

Me too. Had to set it all up so I could succeed not fail. People don't get tp because they're so amazed at how accurate they are with a bow.

I found that if I tell myself "self, this has to be a perfect heart shot, this deer can not suffer, he has to go down quick" self seems to forget about my idiosyncrasies making for a more relaxed, focused shot. Like in hunting, you don't hear or feel the gun or bow. It just happens. Maybe from past human behavior, you see a meal not a target, which was far more important.

theguyinmaine gonna give this a shot, might not work the best for me since i have never hunted. i am trying to become very accurate with a bow before i go hunting, but my frame of mind and end goal of target archery is to be a humane and effective hunter.

As a middle-aged beginner, I never had target panic when I first tried shooting my compound bow. The excitement went away, and because I was trying to develop my precision and consistency, I also developed target panic. I have been watching several experts on RU-vid about how to overcome target panic. They all made sense to me, and it kinda worked for a moment, but I think this technique works a lot better for me. I can now go back to my previous way of pulling the trigger release and be relaxed, and I am able to see the target clearly.

Blind bale practice is the cure for target panic. Skip those targets and shoot an empty 'bale' from about 3 feet away with your eyes closed.....for 3000 repitions. Your target panic will be gone.

Great video Kellen !! Many years ago during the LONG drives to matches in college. Our Golf Coach had us listen to tapes from a top sports psychologist at the time. One of the topics was about learning or breaking a new habit. Studies, at the time, showed it takes 21 consecutive days of consistently doing or not doing something will form or break what you're trying to achieve or discontinue doing. And replacing it with what you want to now do. So your comment about taking 2 to 3 weeks to create this new muscle memory follows this same method. :)>

I have been working on target panic for 6 months now. I used to shoot instinctively when I was younger and shot like that for a long time...then went to shooting a sight and then that’s when the bad habit followed me. Instinctive shooting you draw and then look and fire quickly without even thinking. Then when I went to shooting a sight the habit followed me of drawing and really quick put the pin on the target and fire. You hit the nail on the head of what kind of target panic I have. Some good tips. Keep up the awesome videos

That's the kind of target panic I have. No arrow in the bow, no problem _ I could hold on target forever. With an arrow, I could NEVER get a good sight picture. So I made a band out of a 2-inch wide strip of sheet, just long enough to wrap around my wrist and the string on my recurve bow. It keeps me from shooting the arrow and THIS IS THE ONLY WAY I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SEE WHAT IT'S LIKE TO HOLD ON TARGET WITH AN ARROW NOCKED. This is the only thing that has helped my target panic. I use the loop to hold on target several times for several seconds, then I remove it and proceed to shoot. Now i know what it's like to shoot while taking precise aim, which I could never do before. i still get a bit jumpy, but finally I'm making progress and enjoying archery a lot more. I guess there are a lot of spendy gadgets that do the same thing for compound bows, but this trick costs nothing and it's worth its weight in gold - for me, at least.
@ВладимирПрименко-о5б
It seems to me that you need to be able to shoot both ways, for example, when the wind blows, the trigger-puncher has an advantage.And this happens quite often.

What I found to deal with target pains was actually a pretty simple thin that I changed up All I did was change how the target was introduced to the pin Instead of for instance coming in from the top left I would come in from the bottom left then the bottom right then the top left and just keep doing that This will actually help you also help you in more ways then one when your hunting you in most cases will help you adapt to knowing how to deal with a hunted animals direction that is heading into you line of sight and as far as someone who just

Excellent advice! I've been battling this for some 40 years, I feel I have it down 90% but that last 10% has been a real challenge for all of these years, and it keeps me from shooting really good scores. I used to shoot 5 spot in the mid to upper 50 x's, shot 5 -60x games 15 years ago, now I shoot in the mid 40 x's, it sucks, very discouraging. I'll try your advice, thanks for your videos.

Yeah I've seen his stuff. All about mental control!
@someoneyouknow96
@someoneyouknow96 4 года назад
Everything I’ve seen regarding Joel’s approach is making the shot last longer. Yes, it’s mental. He wants you to hold on that target longer and get comfortable not taking the shot quickly. He even talks about if you feel too shaky holding for that shot that it’s helpful to let down and not “have to take” the shot. That’s just a brief synopsis of what I’ve seen. I have not taken his course. I don’t care to be a perfect archer and I don’t shoot spots.
@jackbuendgen389
@jackbuendgen389 4 года назад
@@someoneyouknow96 I haven taken his course either but I have shot two 3d courses with him and his son at etar. His big thing is gaining mental control of your shot. Everybody's shot process is different. If it's longer, or shorter who cares, right? So long as you are in control of your shot. In a hunting situation just speed up the process. Lethal podcast had him as a guest speaker. That's where I would start if you are more interested.

Figures I'd see this video now; had the 5-pin sight off my bow yesterday to put my vertical single pin sight on. I'll have to try this exercise next time it's off. Maybe it's only because I've shot single pin for so long, but it's way easier for me to hold that single pin steady on the target.
@bmocaby9747
@bmocaby9747 2 года назад
My problem is I draw and can't come up or down on the target and let it float and do its thing but I always end up with my pin right under where I want to hit and cannot get myself to just get on it. Its like I hit a wall and am fighting my brain to just float on the spot. So it leads me to pulling the bow up as I pull the release. Now if I shoot 60-85yrds right out of the gate I can shoot 5 groups that will be touching. Because I'm focused and know any little hiccup and ill miss my block target. But after that I get back into holding low or right above my dot.

@@ViewIndepth I think little of both. Both eyes open gives me a more clear sight picture and doesn't fatigue my dominant eye. Hi I am starting to use your technique for overcoming target panic, but the style of playing archery in my country (Bhutan) and others are different. We shoot 145meters long and we do not use the release aid, we shoot through finger..People go very crazy in archery game in my country and its our national game too... So, i wonder have you got any tactic to get rid off this target panic which I've been struggling for over decades, one time I nearly gave up this game. Looking forward to hearing from you soon with best solutions. Thanks and Love from one of the Happiness country in the world.

First, target panic in archery comes mostly from incomplete, faulty shot cycle, or better: skipping or bad execution of steps in a shot cycle. If you don't remedy that first, and learn how to pull yourself out of an automatic execution of a shot, then nothing is going to help you. Going through a steps with right triggers, so to speak. Shooting without a target, or here, without a sight, is just a band aid, because it doesn't get to a root of a problem: you are conditioned. You are conditioned to a wrong, sight trigger, and you can shoot to a blank bake or a sight a whole year long, but this is incomplete shot: complete shot has another important part in it, aiming, and a shot with aiming is totally another concept, if you do not have a right mental shot division in your brains. Practical consequence: it's not a question if target panic will return, just when. In most cases, sooner than a week or two. Somebody mentioned Joel Turner here, he is a really good source. Another interesting information is coach Kisik Lee, he says basically the same thing as Joel Turner: shot process. Advices as in this video bring nothing new to the table and are nothing more than traditional band aids, which are proven through decades, that, even if they don't do harm, they simply don't work.
@InsideOutPrecision
@InsideOutPrecision 4 года назад
Theres a lot more too this, and I'm familiar with Joel Turner, George Ryals, Lee Kisick and many other coaches. But people pay lots of money for their seminars (myself included) and I'm not about to give away their information for free.

Good video, and target panic sucks... I know a lot of people like to blank bale, but I don't think its a good plan for target panic... reason being is that target panic is caused by the eye seeing that pin get close to the bullseye, and then the subconscious mind takes over.. Its much better to "override" the subconscious and stay conscience... If you have a solid shot sequence, and shoot SO slow that you can stop the shot and NOT shoot at anytime then you are staying in control. IF your subconscious is allowed to take over, you WILL fail in a high pressure situation (Buck fever, Bull fever, target panic)... Your subconscious always finds the most efficient way to get the arrow gone. stay conscious- make decisions, follow your process which should have verbal cues (what you say in your head thru the steps of the shot process)... shoot slowly- Practice NOT shooting
