I so appreciate this topic! We just finished a cruise from Buenos Aires to Lisbon. We hated the cruise line excursions because they were huge, expensive and not consistently in quality. We felt NCL did not do a great job or have any information to alert cruisers about the ports. We arrived in Salvador Brazil and the elevator was being renovated. There was an alternative funicular but no info. Our research was clear that it was not recommended to walk around the port area for safety reasons - very sketchy. Taxis only took local currency (for other reasons we didn’t have or want to have cash) so we decided to return to the ship.

Thanks Steve and Chris - what a helpful video! It was great seeing you on the Royal Princess and Westerdam. I totally agree that going on your own is safe, saves money, and provides a much better experience. Hopefully this will help make people more comfortable and confident to skip cruise excursions. Another tip is before you get off the ship to take a photo with your phone of the Port Agents name and phone number. This information is usually on the ship’s daily program or on the electronic displays around the ship. This will help if you ever have some kind of emergency or are running late for some reason and need to contact the ship. Thanks for all the great content! Bob

We look at cruise excursions when we visit places even though we aren't on a cruise. We are in Quebec City for a month. And got some great ideas and do it on our own. Great pointers.

Yeah. We’ve had similar experiences. In Cartagena, Columbia, everyone who did a ship excursion said they were hot and harassed. The buses were ovens and the street vendors saw the groups of tourists and pounced. We did an Uber from the dock into the city and walked about. A few people asked us to buy stuff, but we weren’t harassed. Though I will say the dock area is a mosh pit of taxi drivers trying to get you to get in their cabs. That’s why we did Uber. At the end of the day, talking to our fellow passengers, they were quite miserable and dissatisfied with Cartagena, whereas we had a lovely day exploring and wandering. Another example is upcoming. In Norway, the town of Flåm, has a scenic railway. The cruise line wanted to charge us $200 each adult and $145 for the 4yo. The same railway, tickets sold by a Norway Travel service, was $190 for both adults and children under 5 were free. Ridiculous markup there!

Totally agree! My struggle is always wanting to book something out of FOMO (what if we arrive and there aren't good options??). But, I do need to plan less and just let things unfold. The experience could be more magical than anything I would have booked.

You went to the same desert camp in Wadi Rum with the b&w tents that I stayed at in 2016. Hope you made it to Petra, Amman, Jerash and Umm Qais / Gadara. Or will another time.
