Yes technique does matter, but the second important thing is how your makeup looks at the end of the day. I'll save on eyeliner (I love my winged liner and waterline eyeliner but I don't need to splurge) but I'll spend more money on everything else, especially face products and eye shadow. They last and look good all day.

I’m a make up artist, and in my kit I carry high end make up and drugstore make up🤷🏽‍♀️ Foundations, liners, mascara from the drugstores are actually sometimes better than high end, and a lot of high end glitters and palettes are sold at Marshall’s so that’s where I go to get most my high end products🤷🏽‍♀️ but that’s just my tips on buying makeup on a budget! And regardless..if you know how to beat a face you know how to beat a face! Period! The brand don’t matter!!!

I feel like the easiest way to tell the difference between drugstore and expensive (regardless of technique/application) is the staying power. In college I used drugstore makeup, and it would look good when I left the house then when I got around to looking in a mirror later on in the day it would look awful. Little mascara flecks, eyeliner faded, oily skin that bulldozed through the primer and foundation, eyeshadow non existent. DONT even get me started on how I looked after the club, I’m just glad there’s no pics of that! Now that I can afford the expensive stuff, my makeup lasts until I take it off. Same routine I did in college, just better quality. The primer I use does an incredible job with oil control, so my foundation looks fresh instead of cakey. My mascara stays on my lashes, my eyeliner still looks bold (not faded), and the only thing I have to touch up throughout the day is lipstick (and that’s only if I eat something). Other than that, I don’t use any blotting papers and literally would not be able to remove my makeup completely without a double cleanse, whereas with drugstore i had a makeup bag in my purse to touch it up throughout the day and could easily be removed with a makeup wipe and cleanser. I’m guessing the makeup was still fairly fresh when they were judging, if it were the end of the day I have no doubt they’d be able to tell the difference.

Expensive doesn't necessarily mean best or even good. It's whatever works best for *your* body. I've been mixing drugstore, high-end, and theatrical makeup all my life.

I fully believe that investing in my makeup and buying higher end brands is what's best, for myself personally. I have horribly bad allergies so experimenting with different brands never ends well for me. I, also, have very sensitive eyes and am a contact wearer. I have really bad seasonal allergies. I generally have troubled skin. Since I decided to invest more in my products my eyes are less irritated, my mascara doesn't flake or smudge even with all the irritation and contacts, my skin is clearer, and I rarely have an allergic reaction to new products. I wear makeup only for personal enjoyment, it's one of my few hobbies so I don't mind spending more money on products that will also last longer

It’s so hard to get a drugstore minimalistic (like glossier or rms) kinda look. I feel like drugstore ends up too cakey no matter how hard it tries.

I work at a beauty store and I got them all right :D tbh I guessed based on how the makeup looked and how much time goes into it and their overall vibe ya know? first two girls seemed like they like to take their time and do lots of steps, hair, etc and last girl seemed like she wanted to get it done and be on her way ya know. Plus I still swear by some drugstore products, I refuse to buy expensive eyeliner or dip brow when elf, wet n wild, and nyx are awesome.

No one can tell the price, but people can absolutely clock technique and application. And the products you buy should feel and look good as well as have ingredients that won't harm the skin. Find the good quality, apply it well
