MY FINAL CANADIAN STUDMUFFIN VIDEO FOR THIS CHANNEL: • SAYING GOODBYE TO THIS... I've lost monetization on this channel and my appeal was rejected with no reason given for what I've done wrong. If anyone would like to donate I would really appreciate it: paypal.me/canadianstudmuffin I rely on income from RU-vid to help pay my bills as I no longer work due to health issues. I was on disability but that ended in 2023 when I turned 65. Another way to help out is to join my Patreon song and album requests channel at / larrygraves . I can't reapply for monetization until Sept. 15th. but I think I am sadly done with this channel. I will only be only uploading new content on my 2nd channel (which is still monetized) at / @larrygravescanadianst... so please subscribe.
P.S I've received a lot of kind words and donations and I truly thank everyone for their help!

Hi Larry .... just like to say a big thank you for introducing me to sparks , I watched one of your sparks videos a few months ago and decided to check them out... WOW.. I first checked the RU-vid video "this town ain't big enough for the both of us" followed by "amateur hour" great songs .. from 1974.. so I went out and bought kimono my house , introducing sparks, and the new one hippopotamus.. all great albums.. what a great voice Russell mael has ... all I can say is they have great catchy tunes and would recommend sparks for a listen to.. thanks Alan.

How can someone NOT like Russell's voice?? It's simply unique and the best voice I've ever heard. I loved it from the very first time I heard it! And apart from that Russell is also very hot. XD Btw. "Dick Around" and "Ugly Guys With Beautiful Girls" are the 2 songs that made me realize that they influenced Disturbed.

Todd Rundgren helped many great bands create their sounds at the time he worked with Sparks. Check out his incredible THE GREAT SPECKLED BIRD with CANADIANS Ian And Sylvia...done about the same time as the Sparks album !

That was the first song I heard by sparks in 1979. To this day it's my favourite song and sparks by far my favourite band.

I’m in love with the band sparks. You didnt make me a fan however, I discovered them through Devo i think. But i was very intrigued by some of their demo work in the late 60’s. So as up to hippopotamus.

I had never hear of them until you mentioned them in your videos. The only song of theirs, of the handful that I tried listening to, that I liked was Edith Piaf (She Said It Better than Me). It's the only one that I made it all the way through.

The number one song in heaven was the first song that ever made me sit up and listen when I was a kid. Over the next couple of weeks my sisters boyfriend gave me copies of indiscreet, followed by propaganda and kimono my house, and I've been a huge fan ever since.

Great series - Sparks are great, remember hearing 'This Town' on the radio in '74 and immediately thought it was brilliant and saw them live here in the UK in the same year and that show was brilliant too, and no problems with Russell's vocals, one of the best, but like you say listen to their songs more than once and you will get it.

Similar story to me, for the past two months I've just gone through their albums from the eponymous debut up to 'In Outer Space' several times, learning every single song. They're amazing! The next few albums are sounding weaker but I shall carry on!

Yep. Thanks to Larry I found Sparks and became a fan. Knew the song "This town...' but I thought it was a woman singing (never saw the Hitler-on-the-telly-vid - dixit John Lennon). Anyway, Kimono my House is a masterpiece. Thanks mr. Graves!

I do love, "This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us". I haven't been real impressed with much else of what I've seen on RU-vid (mostly early live material). However, I'm on Amazon Unlimited, and will definitely give them a listen.

Best band of the 60's The Beatles, the 70's Queen, the 80's Ultravox, the 90's Manic Street Preachers, the 2000's The Killers. And during all those decades: Sparks. Of course its just my opinion.

although I do kinda like some sparks songs like 'Never turn your back on mother earth' (which almost made me cry because it's such a beautiful melody), 'Edith Piaf said it better', 'This Town' and I found 'I Predict' and 'complaints' quite hilarious. On the contrary, I'm not too keen on their more experimental work like l'il Beethoven (which by the way was released in 2002) and I can just about stand 'Equator' which IS a great song but needs to be shorter especially near the end. I get what you mean about reading the lyrics while listening as it's almost impossible to understand what Russel Mael is saying with his high pitched squealing but in terms of music Mael should've at the time at least make what he's saying legible enough so the listener can actually understand him (I'm talking about the 70's 'glam rock' period when he looked like a hyperenergetic fluffy poodle on horse steroids)
@annabackman3028
@annabackman3028 5 лет назад
I believe that Equator is a little bit of a show off of Russell's voice. The competition between Sparks/Russell's voice and Queen/Freddie's voice was probably more serious than neither band would admit. Silly, two very different kinds of voices, Freddie's was powerful, could nearly stepped in for Bruce Dickinson/Iron Maiden. Russell's voice is sensitive and was, as he showed here, higher pitched. I also think Russell are better in shifting between styles, more variety in his repertoire. I'm not sure that Freddie could do songs like 'Renaissance' or 'Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil' with that combination of fragility and edge. Completely different voices. No need for any competition, yet that debate still goes on😣😩 I really like Equator, though. In it all it's strange that I love Russell's voice (even though I fell in love with it when I heard Propaganda the first time in the winter 1975- 76) when I also love Leonard Cohen's voice. A paradox 😂

Sometimes I think Russell have a little ADHD thing going on 😂😂! No, I'm not seriously putting a label of that diagnosis on him. I think I am entitled to joke about that, having that myself.
@johnwalsh128
@johnwalsh128 4 года назад
I used to feel the same way about the end of equator, but over time I realised that in the song, he's been waiting for ages for the girl to turn up, and that's why the end lasts so long. There's method in everything sparks do. ☺

Really love that selection. I could have done nearly the same. And now I will probably add Left Out in the Cold. Hope you will do some ranking from worst to best on some albums. I just saw the one for Kimono my House and I will be very interested by other ones.

Of course with 25 albums over 45 years you can quibble about omissions, but good list. Saw the 3rd LA show, BTW. Great as always. I knew of Sparks long before I really started listening. Big fan now! Actually the LACK of falsetto on the new album is something for me to get used to at this point :)

Hey Larry. Not hugely impressed by the new LP. Hippopotamus is not bad but their recent peak still is Exotic Creatures. To me the best 3 Sparks LPs are 'Kimono', 'Exotic Creatures' and 'Lil Beethoven' (followed by my other fav 2 LPS, 'Gratuitous sax' and 'Propaganda'); as all have MANY great songs and represent different aesthetics not just a few. Great band with many great songs over the years. (note NOT a fan of their 80's material!!)

Angst in my pants is worth a listen though. It's probably their best album of the 80's.
