Bearsville records in ulster county ny. So many great artists albums were recorded there. Most of them produced by Todd Rundgren

Love Slowboat! It’s not a typically Sparks song, but it’s so good. I also love Fletchers Honorama. Russells voice and Rons solo pianoplaying is fantastic! Already longing for the next review! 😁

Most of Todd's 70s productions have a brittle trebly sound. His mixing and engineering can be dodgy but his influence on the arrangements and songwriting is why he was a great producer.

I’m a little late to the party but I’m looking forward to this! Started listening to Sparks’ discography a few months ago and I’ve listened through Whomp that Sucker and so far, I’m pretty pleased with them! It’s been a while since I’ve heard this album but I do remember the first two and last two songs were my favorites, and I’d have to say No More Mr. Nice Guys is my favorite as well.

Nice! Sparks haven't already found their style and the album sounds a bit different to their classical albums but for a debut album it's very strong. I like it and I love "No More Mr. Nice Guys"!

Nice one Larry! Surprisingly good debut from the Mael brothers.I have the reissued brick cover on vinyl ( from 1974).The voice changer you used was kinda strange but suits your personality perfectly.

Great review slowboat is probably my favourite from the album just a really beautiful song also really like Fletcher honorama for how strange it is. Could never really get into wonder girl for some reason.

Ah, Yes, Thanks for this! I only really know the early singles plus Propaganda and Indiscreet. I am really interested in these reviews (although maybe my bank balance wont thank me for it!) . I am tempted already!

Todd Rundgren also worked on XTC's 1986 album "Skylarking" where he butted heads with Andy Partridge a lot.

Their debut is such a masterwork. Remove "Biology 2" and replace it with a better cut from Woofer and you'll have yourself the second best album of 1971. As it is, it is still in the top 10 best albums of the year. Love this album almost as much as you Larry, this series will be a lot of fun! Edit: forgot about Sticky Fingers

This album is such a good debut album. The first 4 songs, to me, are solid and brilliant. Slowboat is likely one of my favorite Sparks songs which is so beautiful. Biology 2 is also so cool to me. I learned it on guitar a while ago and it just showed me how weird it is, especially for being tuned in C standard rather than E, which was pretty unusual at the time. Overall I love this album and I know I'll only love it more and more in the future. Halfnelson/Sparks B

Sorry Larry,I liked Wonder Girl but didn't think much of the other two songs Slowboat and Computer Girl,that Ron Mael though is quite a character and has a great gimmick going on with his Charlie Chaplin thing,utterly brilliant and Russell Mael's actually quite a good singer and charismatic as well,they really are quite a pair those two. Bob.

Never listened much to this one. Perhaps it’s because I discovered the eponym Sparks after the masterpieces of the 70’s like Propaganda. Seems that this album often called Halfnelson is more of an introduction to the next 4 which are the epicentre of Sparks discography. Through the years I have maintained a playlist called Sparks, One Album One Song and the first entry is Slowboat.

This is probably my favourite spark's album. I bought it second hand of a mates girl friend in 74 a think. Maybe indiscreet album from 75 is a touch better?? Apart from the terrible get in the swing. That was one shit song .
