I think the main reason i vibed with Three Houses so much is something similar to how Starcraft 2 coop works - you're being given absolutely insane tools to make use of stacked against insane enemy stats / quantity and your job is to determine how to make use of what you have access to to beat the odds. You can commit to the stat race and judge where you can beat the system. You can completely disregard stats and commit to alternative methods of winning. You can mix and match in a thousand different ways. Its just fun to create a plan in which level 10 Dark Mage Caspar one shots DK in his paralogue with a crit and minimal investment, or a plan in which Dark Knight Hilda is just barely in Bolting range to give a crucial support bonus. To end off the comment I'd like to share my favorite comment about 3H made by Karma: "With 3H meme strats its a coinflip on whether its trash or secretly meta."

Three Houses is a game that I never stopped liking. It's just a game where it was easy to see that I'd played it too much. Somewhere around 268 hours within the first year it was out. Then like another 50 when the DLC came out. Though I didn't ever do a playthrough with the DLC characters, as they had that restricted story mode when they first came out or whatever. Its easiest weakpoint is the lack of variety in its maps, with many of them being ugly and small imho. But I think all of its strong points make up for that. It is so supremely fun to have modular units. A real D.E.D.U.E. type game (Deliberate Efforts Determine User Experience). The fact that it has a fairly good story also helps. I personally derive a lot of enjoyment from speccing the units into their baned categories, often resulting in them being powerful in an unexpected way. From your playthrough, I'm learning more about the meta game behind things like gardening with the plant rank affecting professor rank based on the rank of what's planted. Didn't know that type of thing before! I hope you keep on enjoying it, Mekkah!

Even though I grew up with the "classics", 3H is still my favourite FE game by far. The story and presentation is awesome, but the mechanical depth and all the customization is so satisfying and nitty-gritty to get into. It literally inspired me to build an FE TTRPG system within google spreadsheets using the bones of the game. The monastery activities and all the abilities and skill ranks create such a fun environment for "Number-Go-Up FeelGood" and it translates surprisingly well to a "Roleplaying with your homies" dicey game (that some people actually like playing!). I think overall I've run through the whole game 9~12 times, and I've done a few weirdo restriction maddening runs too, since the game permits so many styles of unit composition. I will totally admit though, the monastery in Part 2 feels undercooked and maybe mishandled. The more we love a game the more flaws we see, right? Anyway, thanks so much Mekkah for bringing this beloved game back into the spotlight and in a way that really shows its unique strengths! I love seeing Balthus go brrr and the crest of Fraldarius with its 100% activation rate.

I got into fire emblem maybe 5 years ago, and I started with 3 houses on my college roommates switch. I became hooked, and a few years ago I found a comment like this from Leelee-Brown, that got me into the Fire Emblem DND Community on discord. I have been playing once or twice every week, and the numbers keep going up, but it's still so fun. The freedom to choose even a handful of skills allows for so much customizability and creativity, that even after hundreds of units have been made, they can still feel distinct and unique.

Maddening mode has done a lot to make me appreciate the monastery aspects more. When the game first came out, I burnt myself hard doing VW and AM runs back to back. My AM run didn't even fully utilize the monastery because I was doing a challenge run where I only changed tutoring goals when the students gave the suggestions. But since Maddening actually requires you to take advantage of everything the monastery has to offer in order to succeed, it really becomes a core part of the experience. I much prefer the old style of FE where you just tackle map after map, but I also like the micromanagement of more hardcore sim style strategy games like Romance of the Three Kingdoms and 3H definitely scratches that itch.

Your series made me restart the game for a new maddening playthrough, and I have to say, even if I still don't like the free for all style of the class system and some less than good UI choice, the game is fun and maddening is less tedious than I remembered! At the moment I'm having a blast again, and all thanks to this stats race!

For me, 3 Houses is best if you just space your playthroughs out. Doing multiple runs back to back of the different routes will lead to extreme burnout very fast due to part 1 being the exact same every time.

If I had not literally just finished a Hard NG+ Silver Snow playthrough a month or so ago, I would 100% be playing along. But this playthrough has inspired me to try Maddening NG for my next run, whenever that is! Between this and Avaikening I apparently will be dragged into some notoriously harder difficulties kicking and screaming.

Personally I loved 3H (and yes all of it) pretty consistently across the years of discourse and played close to 600 hours in total basically straight. I played all routes before Maddening released then played them all again afterward. I might have even run the gauntlet again after the DLC dropped. But after I stopped playing I had completely burnt out and while I maintain it's my favorite FE I have not touched it since like 2021. Burnt out may not even be the right term, my enjoyment never went down there was just nothing else for me to do in the game. The arc you describe is more how I was with the Tellius games especially Radiant Dawn. RD was my first so of course I really liked it at first, then for a while I wasn't so hot on it and became frustrated with certain story and gameplay decisions but I've circled back to thinking it's just plain good again.

I consider playing 3H to be like eating an extremely rich chocolate cake. It tastes nice at first, and it's something you really appreciate, but eventually your tongue starts to adjust and the flavour doesn't hit right, or you start to feel a little sick from having too much. If you try and force it too quickly, you end up disliking the cake more and more, and eventually when you've finished it you look back at the meal rather negatively. Having said that, after giving it some time to settle, I've come back around to liking the game - at least in terms of gameplay. It also helps that these days I'm only having a slice of the cake, rather trying trying to eat the whole thing.

I recently started a 3 houses maddening run without ng+ on blue lions like a month prior to your new stat race series and I'm kinda mad I didnt wait a bit longer since the things I'm learning would have made my playthrough even more exciting and a lot less frustrating/difficult. I did small optimization/fun things like armor knight certification for Mercedes/Annette so they could tank early on, but seeing y'all take that to the next level with more exact stat benchmarks and things like thief certification for Balthus which i had no idea could give so many stats ontop of stuff like small monastery support optimizations and when to recruit certain units and why has been very insightful and entertaining. I do agree with your mindset on replaying 3 houses with more knowledge and planning in mind, also a long break from the repetitive maps/gameplay of the several routes makes it much more enjoyable, seeing your ideas come together is very satisfying, especially against what feels like unfair bullshit Maddening throws at you, it makes the game so much more enjoyable. At least it makes the Monastery part much more engaging, Seeing my Mercedes get +6 hp and +5 defense just from ceritfying into armor knight allowing her to nostank until basically halfway through part 2 was a dopamine rush I didnt know I needed until it happened, even if it wasnt super optimal, just seeing the plan come together really adds a layer of enjoyment you wouldnt get otherwise from 3 houses.

Your playthrough inspired me to start my own maddening blue lions and I think this is the most fun I’ve had with the game since launch. I think I’ve realized that 3H is my favorite fire emblem game bc it has so much good stuff. The complexity with what you can do with each character is so fun and I think it gives me the most little dopamine rushes out of all the fire emblem games. Like this playthrough I’m using Marianne as a trickster and it’s worked out so well and I’ve never had an effective class for her to use Blutgang which is very exciting to me lmao. Great game with so much charm

People give 3h difficulties a lot of flak, especially maddening, but I found all of them at least had a purpose. Normal was for people that just wanted to experience the story, Hard allowed for experimentation, while still having enough pushback to give you feedback on what works and what doesn't, while Maddening is all about taking what you learned in Hard, and applying it to optimization. Compare to engage's 3 difficulties, "why does this even exist?", "trivialized by how busted emblems are", and "buy the even more broken dlc emblems, you dumb cattle".

Part 2 monetary does definitely suffer from a lot of your builds and planning generally being complete, so I find there's generally way less fun decisions to make in optimising what to teach and set as a goals and whatnot. But spending a silly amount of time trying to make the most of the monastery in part 1 is genuinely a ton of fun, itches my brain in just the right way and makes me enjoy the game more every time I replay

Once I meet my main goals in a run I start planning what I want to do in a second run. Then I'll start working towards those ranks in advance with the plan to use NG+ features. I'll do dumb stuff like getting poison strike on Ignatz or training high armor/riding/flier ranks on units who typically able struggle to build those ranks at the start of a run.

One of the things I feel when I play 3H is inclusion. Like earlier FE games do a decent job of getting everyone to know each other but some characters who have interactions in the main story inexplicably don't have supports, which I've always found a little odd. 3H does a great job of putting these characters together and have them interact in and out of house (except Hubert i learned recently) makes that war phase all the worse when it comes. 3H is charming, challenging and absolutely heartbreaking (if you don't recruit everyone anyway, PTWNCA is a banger though). In terms of gameplay, I'd say that's every FE games tries, at least in some way, to innovate and 3H does a good job of it too, I will grant engage some love in saying that battle animations are better in that, it's not a huge downside on 3H part though. There's a lot to love here, even if it doesn't seem like a FE game at times.

Leaving a comment because the video told me too 👍🏼 Lol glad to see a resurgence in 3H interest due to seeing the game in a whole new light. I’ve always been in love with 3H but discussing the game with players like Raisins and Scepti led to me seeing it in a whole new light and deepened my love for 3H in a similar way to what you are experiencing now. Stat manipulation leads to additional layers of strategy that you can try and peel back to spice up your runs in new and interesting ways in each playthrough.

Part of that, I think, is the Monastery combines a conflicted objective with the combat and story. WIth Persona, you're exploring a bunch of smaller stories for the individual exploration parts, which makes the overworld synthesize more even if there are things you can do to just go with your skill bars. With Three Houses, that ratio of story and interesting things seems to go way down. Compare tea parties to cultivation, cooking, and tournaments. Tea parties, you're learning about characters in a small way. Cooking and tournaments are more "number go up", while cultivation and fishing are literally points to get more points. Then there's the question of "what are you aiming towards?" This is a point where even gacha games seem to have more of a focus, including *shudders* Fire Emblem Heroes. Resources are a momentary thing there, and grinding is done more within the combat nature with things like Arena and Tempest Trials. Those give levels, skills, AP resources...while a lot of Three Houses seems to be "I legitimately don't know, except for certifications". Certification stat modifiers, if emphasized a little more, might do this. The fact the area involves the church army makes that even more confusing; there could be examples of Church people at a certain rank with selectable stats to show what a new class might look like. To me, that's the major thing sacrificed for a quick version of the instruct command where I think Seminars could have gone into greater detail or been something more akin to SMT puzzle quests (free to attempt, involves solving a puzzle with preselected units). I still think that if there was a mode of "just put everything except story to an automode without even going to the screen, with the option to do manual things if you want", maybe with the ability to change goals mid-battle, it might help with that. I also think some environmental storytelling and intel options for a first playthrough or route playthrough to get a better idea of desired benchmarks through enemy feats (combat prowess rumors?) could help the monastery become more of something to help you feel more like preparing your class for things you suspect might be challenges. Maybe make a chapter or two for characters like TWSITD where the intel doesn't really help. I dunno.

Your series actually got me back into 3h and got me to start my own maddening run for the first time. Tbf i always like it, but i put like 3 and a half routes into it at release all on hard so i havent played since. I learned a lot from your early videos but quickly caught up and just wanted to play on my own, up to ch 15 now having a blast, although i did go with the more ability focused strats over the stat race method. Hit plus 20, deathblow, darting blow, etc. But its been great fun.

I think the comparison with fates and 3H is that while Fates is front loaded, a lot of what you’re planning for is so far in the future when you first start that it can feel a bit disorienting or unfulfilling because you don’t know if your investment for say Corrin is going to pay off in the end. The short term planning 3H does fixes this issue because now while you can plan for long term like getting flying rank and Armor rank, you can also do smaller goals and benchmarks whether its the whole death knight spread sheet calc you and raisins have or stuff like grabbing D/D+ authority for your rallies.

This is the exact experience I had when I played 3H with my sister (her second FE game, first being Echoes). Having played all the routes, I grew to dislike the monastery and the map design and the supports (shivers), but my sister wanted to play it with me because Claude was so dreamy to her xD Going in, I knew what characters I wanted, what classes I wanted and what abilities I wanted/found out about on the internet and then wanted. Then I had to factor in what characters, classes and abilities were appealing to my sister and let her influence the playthrough, and that made me really enjoy the game again! I loved optimizing things with my game knowledge so I could prepare funny builds with characters I've never used because I knew my sister would enjoy them, while also investing in safe/powerful units on the side. I also played all the paralogues I never got to play in all my other playthroughs and that added to the enjoyment! I still wouldn't put 3H as my favorite FE game (that undoubtedly goes to Echoes), but it has crawled its way into being one of my top favorite FE games!

@implying8903 4 дня назад
I'm trying to explain why Fates can feel so overwhelming: Every major decision in Fates directly affects your options for other decisions; they're all linked. So right at the character creation you're already thinking about the entire playthrough. What builds do you want to use? Who can fill that role? Does that require any specific Corrin talent or gender? Does it require any other marriage pairings? How would it affect the performance of the other marriage partner or the child unit? Does it restrict access to any other builds? Fates makes you think about all of that before the game even starts, which is what feels so overwhelming.

Three houses is my favorite fire emblem and more than that, my favorite game of all time. I played the game more than 30 times back to back. And the reason is not the gameplay, even tho i love it, but the characters, the world and the overall atmosphere. I know that a lot of people find it annoying, but in 30 playthrough i never found the monastery boring in phase 1. You see all your students living their life, reacting to the progress of the world, you teach them, they warm to you and each other and even if some fuckep thing happen everyonne seems to be more or less happy. You become confortable with the characters until the white heron cup and the bal, but when Jeralt die everything start to collapse until the end of act 1 ans the imperial army attack. I just love the pacing of act 1. I will agree that the monastery is a lot more boring in act 2 but still nice. I love the characters so much, probably my favorite cast of all media. Not beacause they are the best written but because of the way they interact between them. They interact in cutscenes, in the monastery and in support conversation. You can clearly dress a chart of how everyone see each other and how their relations progress through the month. ANd even though i say they weren't the best written characters in media they are still very well written. The supports are a mix of serious one were you can understant the chara traumas, their motivation and why they behave a certain way. But they are also the silly ones, and i know that not everyone like those one, but for me that what really make the cast of 3H so human. The lore goes also fucking hard, especially the relic weapon and how they function. The story is can be a bit lackluster, but still very emotionnal and epic. And the fact that the story is mostly character based with good characters compensate for some of it's weakness. I love this game so much that's i could write about it even more and do entire paragraphs (but maybe not in english)

I find this can happen with a lot of games. You play it a certain way for a while and it gets boring, but then you find a new, fresh way to play it and it becomes new and exciting again. Ghast started posting a randomized Engage LP recently, so I decided to check out the randomizers that were available. The Fell Xenologue had really soured me on the game as a whole. But with the randomizer, it made it interesting and fun again, so I’ve been really enjoying the game in a way I hadn’t for a while. With Three Houses especially, there are so many new and different ways to play it that are built right in that it seems pretty easy to get back into it if you want.

One thing I actually learnt from you is how to be *less* optimal, if that makes sense? When it comes to winning the stat race, you aim for specific benchmarks, like Def or AS or 1-hit bulk, but trying to get an extra 2 points in defense when you're already living (or taking zero) doesn't help you? In some games I try to squeeze out every bit of value, but instead of spending 80% of my time getting the last possible point in a stat, or never feeding the jaigen, or getting +5% in growths for one level, I could just spend the silver lance or use the powerful unit, and I think knowing the benchmarks helps with understanding that the game is a bit forgiving, even on Maddening mode ❤ Thanks for the content ~

For me, the difference between customization in Fates and 3H is that in the former, customizing is tied to a scarce resource. You can't try a new class just for the hell of it, because you are limited with regards to Heart Seals. Whereas in my current playthrough, I'm doing a run where Ingrid switches from mage to Pegasus Knight depending on the map. There's less risk to trying something wild in 3H

I made it into a Mekkah video, hell yeah. Loosely following along with this series has been extremely fun, I recommend everyone watching tries it. In my own playthrough I'm a bit ahead now (ch. 7) but I've been using the stat race mentality to conquer every paralogue in the month they appear. Overcoming massive stat jumps at a time it feels like I shouldn't be able to is exhilarating. In addition to stat racing, I recommend actually playing the maps instead of warp or flier skipping them, no matter how tempting that is. Maps like chapter 6 and the Lorenz paralogue are the most fun the game offers, and it would be a shame to put that fun to waste (maybe some part 2 maps are actually good too, guess I'll have to figure that out). This game really is a boundless sandbox, and I'm very thankful to this series for pulling me back in it.

re: the part about 3H versus Fates and optimizing both: I also like both games, I also enjoy optimization, and when you said that maybe it's just that Fates is frontloaded it clicked for me. with Fates, you make one major decision at the front of the game, and thus all the planning and optimizing for that decision has to be done right then. but in Three Houses, you might have an idea-even a solid one-at the start of the game of what you want to do with a unit, but this time the game isn't asking you what endgame classes you want one or more of your units to be before the prologue has even started. the planning and optimizing for 3H choices happens right before whenever it is the game asks you to commit to those choices: piece by piece over the course of the playthrough. that's why the optimization thing feels more fun in 3H - you're not optimizing for 20 chapters later right from the start. hell, even if you are doing long term optimization stuff, you're just doing the immediately relevant part of that optimization and don't have to do the rest of it right now, too. or something. maybe not the best analogy but I hope the overall point came through at least

I'm not ashamed to say I don't really have the patience for Monastery. To be any good at it you have to be playing 3h a lot with means even more Monastery. I would love a QoL mod for this game that removes RNG like the failure chances/resets from Sauna and Faculty Training, and some kind of bait turnin mod that just gives some baseline professor level and fish rewards based on the date and it would be maybe 30% less painful overall. Optimization is the only real thing that makes it engaging, but I think it's muddied by needlessly drawn out scenes and dice rolls.

I've never hated the Monastery. It is in my top 10 settings in games I have played to be honest. Storywise I love seeing the characters reactions month-to-month to the world around around them. It helps to make it seem like an actual lived in location. Gameplay wise I spend about an hour doing a lap seeing what each character needs as far as motivation or support, gardening, and weapon/item maintenance. It also helps that every character, even the NPCs, is fully voiced because "hearing" the characters helps to connect with them instead of "reading" the characters, which is one of the cons of places like the Somniel in Engage. As far as repetition goes I mean except for like three maps per route all of the maps are the same in every playthrough not just White Clouds. So, I always felt that that criticism should apply to all parts of the game not just the first half, if you are going to use it. I'm not an optimal player so I just do whatever I feel like as far as planning goes unless I see a build that interests me to work toward it. My current playthrough is the first one I have used the "Batallion Vantage/Wrath" combo on Dimitri, and I turned Caspar into an almost 90% AVO tank. I have 1,000+ hours in the game, 100 hours of which are from this year, so I never really fell out on Three Houses. That said I am just now doing my first Maddening run. I'm kind of sad it took so long to try because it is fun, and I am getting my butt kicked to where I have run out of Divine Pulses to get a game over.

The biggest obstacles for me enjoying 3H are things nobody ever seems to mention: 1. The input lag. The game feels nowhere near as responsive as, say, the GBA or Tellius games. Those games felt super snappy where I feel in 3H it's so easy to misinput or overshoot where you want to send your unit. Which brings us to... 2. The silly early-FE thing where if you press B after moving a unit somewhere but before confirming it, it takes you back to the unit's starting position instead of hovering above where you selected. Why? Pressing B twice did that in older games anyway. These might not seem like big deals but little things like responsiveness are huge in a game with so many little inputs. But people make me feel like I'm crazy because I seem to be the only one to notice these things. Definitely not a fan of the way weapons, classes and recruitment work but I acknowledge it works well for the setting

I love the game and put over 800 hours into it by now, but you're 100% right on the input lag lol. It's very noticeable, especially in the late game where for no reason the game's performance starts to slow down and the input lag gets even more noticeable. I think it's an overall issue with the modern 3D games because Engage's input lag is also pretty bad.

@@runaway74 No worries haha. I've gotten used to it since I've put so many hours into it but 3H (and Engage) are one of the few games I've played where the input lag is so noticeable, including the Switch ports of Civilization VI and Cities Skylines.

They did a pretty good job but I think this concept is not fully realized, & I want them to try again after having made this game. It wants to be Persona 5, but P5 lets you go at your own pace whereas 3H breaks you away from the tactical gameplay with 30 minutes of chores and menus. They could easily speed this up, and clearly they know going off of Engage

Surprisingly the flexibility options of 3H mean that there are so many ways to run through the game again while keeping it somewhat of a challenge, as you can very simply shoot yourself in the foot to make it more difficult (still not that difficult, but it's a start).

Uh... that optimizing thing is what I did since day 1 of me playing FE3H, so i don't think this advice will apply to me but I appreciate it all the same Mekkah. I did also make meme runs of class and character combinations that were bad or themed like Knight Felix, No Mercy, or Dark Arts Ignatz. There's not much fun left for someone who's played 7 and a half times, but I do like discussing FE3H and watching others discuss it too like you do with your vids. You're doing good, keep at it Mekkah.

I really like 3 houses characters, music, and some story. I do think the gameplay lacks though compared to more limited reclass systems, and honestly I barely remember any maps that stick out to me as interesting. I honestly really like the dlc due to your characters being relatively fixed so the challenge can be more finer tuned. In the normal game it just goes 0-100 so fast on unit strength.

I think unlike most fire emblem games three houses really nails the story beats of it especially on more and more playthroughs. On my final run of the game it felt really sad when i killed enemy units that were potentially recruitable just because i got to know them so much over playthroughs. So i totally get why people really enjoy the monastery being in the game and i think its a positive more than an negative

I've said this to a lot of people, and I stand by it. Disclaimer: I love Three Houses, I've played it SO much and go back to it semi-regularly. However, my opinion is that Three Houses is a fantastic turn based JRPG, however, it's not a very good Fire Emblem game. It's just so different in gameplay in a lot of ways from traditional Fire Emblem that I think if you go into it with a mindset of it being a traditional Fire Emblem, you probably will be a bit disappointed. If you're going into it with a mindset of a JRPG though, it's absolutely fantastic, which is why I think you tend to see people who are part of the traditional Fire Emblem fanbase tend to have a lot of problems with it, whereas there's lots of people who haven't really Fire Emblem players who absolutely adore Three Houses, and that's alright. I'll be interested to see if we see another Three Houses style game in the future, or if it will be more in the style of Engage, which was (gameplaywise) much more aimed at the traditional FE audience, and didn't get anywhere near the same mainstream attention because of it.

Remember that agency is a very popular tool in games and 3H has a lot of agency and i mean a lot , first off you have 3 different routes you pick at the beginning with different units (and at release there was the which class are you gonna pick hype) the skills that you learn and the class/skill that you go thru and master , and all of this was in the marketing which helped a lot. Then you have the story where bc you have ~three~ routes some casuals will go through 2 so that means that the game lived a while after its release with a ng+ system allowing you to go thru the story without caring about the combat system . Emblem has none of that the story is very short and has no replayability , the story is awful , the main protagonist is not a good unit plus can't use most magical emblem since they have no magic . The story is awful again , it can be summed up as "anime bingo card" . The early game is probably the worst early game of the entire series where it's not viable but recommended to ditch every unit except 2 until chapter 12 . I want to like emblem just for the mechanics of it all but the early game is so long and useless that i don't play it even tho Ivy and Fogado are on my top 5 units . The issues of 3H can be streamlined into : monastery takes too much time and part 2 makes monastery redundant - skill emblem make choice paralysis/having to check every skill on every unit - some routes are not invested in (GD) . Emblem has : some emblems are useless and get powercrept by the time you get them back - the early game units do not matter as the replacements are better - some units are dead on arrival - warping is just a better experience than playing the map - the story is so bad it makes fates look like a NYT best seller - they tried to fix the monastery but made it worse somehow . Anyway 3H changed up the formula, emblem stuck with it

I disagree when people call it a bad Fire Emblem game. It's an incredibly rewarding game when it comes to strategy. From the map design to the more subtle mechanics like the trade system I get that unique rush that other RPG series cannot provide.

I'm not sure if it was just the focus on SRPG elements over JRPG elements that hurt Engage in terms of popularity among non-FE fans. I think a big part was that the marketing was really bad, at least at the start, and while 3H had a whole year of trailers and info coming out Engage was announced like 4 months before release. Also, Three Hopes had just come out and had while it's a spin off, it was marketed as more of a "canon" spin off than TMS or FEW1 so I think there might have been some burnout even though the last mainline FE had been released 4 years earlier. All that to say that I do think leaning into more JRPG mechanics (not just the Persona/life-sim stuff, but even having each route focus on only a small party of main characters to get attached to) definitely helped in popularity

I agree with the idea that if you try to force Three Houses to play *just* like other, older Fire Emblem games that you might find yourself confused or at odds with the game, and that it’s best approached on its own terms. But on the other hand I always really disagree with the sort of easy notion of that meaning it’s a good game but a bad fire emblem game. In a way, i think Three Houses taking that approach-that it’s a game that stands totally on its own as an immersive epic saga despite being preceded by 15+ other games in such a long-running and consistent series, and that it should therefore be treated as its own thing-almost makes it the quintessential Fire Emblem game and one of the team’s greatest accomplishments because of that. It isn’t beholden to tradition, past knowledge, or desensitization to oddities or tropes that made the series somewhat hard to swallow for less niche audiences until now, and most importantly it’s not *commercialized*, it’s just its own experience; it had the ambition to reinvent tradition to make something that anyone has the potential enjoy. Not to say other games in the series can’t also be this, but Three Houses is truly a universal kind of work of art you don’t see too often, and for that I think it’s a fantastic fire emblem game. I think the best thing you can do as an artist working on a “franchise” (blegh don’t like that word) is to make art that stands on its own. I also find the idea that new fans that came from three houses being uninterested in the rest of the series or not liking/understanding the rest of the series to be kind of untrue, maybe I’m just not in enough discussion forums on the subject or something but I always find Three Houses fans either left and never came back because they were just interested in other popular things and prioritized that, or they found other games in the series they enjoy, even though Three Houses still takes the cake for them for that kind of universality I described before. I don’t think I actually have encountered someone who liked Three Houses, tried other, older games and went on to completely throw anything that wasn’t Three Houses under the bus. You may have seen someone like that though who knows. I just think that Three Houses, despite having that subtle ingenuity and knowing where to use it that ushered it into the spotlight, isn’t all that mechanically or conceptually different than its predecessors *especially* from a casual perspective, which someone who just got into the series would naturally have. I think the slope of going from Three Houses to other games is borderline shallow, although the slope of going from being super duper duper hardcore traditional FE gamer, like, swimming in meta to Three Houses might then be a little steeper.

I loved the gameplay and difficulty, Story was not bad either but I hated how sluggish it feels comparing it to GBA-3ds era games, which all ran at 60fps, but more importantly don't have delayed controls like the Switch games have. Like when you move a character you have to wait for like half a second before being able to do any menuing. Definitely waiting for the Switch 2 to replay 3 Houses

Personally, i do like to re-experience the story on pretty much every playthrough and kind of give into the illusion of the game, which also includes choosing to not completely break it. The only game i've stopped watching the story is sacred stones because i have played it SO much. I imagine that for someone who plays fire emblem a lot like you you kind of reach that point for every game and the story/atmosphere/characters aspect kind of becomes diminished. Three houses has probably the best characters in the series and one of the better stories, along with the monastery of course so i think it relies quite heavily on things outside of the grid based combat. This makes it immersive, but less replayable since these aspects are lost on repeat playthroughs. This especially hurts since there are 4 routes. I mostly enjoy the monastery, but halfway through part 2 even i have experienced it as a slog. A bunch of aspects you need to manage around like recruitment and lost items just aren't present anymore, you have more professor points than you know what to do with, the music is always the same, and frankly what optimizations you can do just don't reap the same rewards anymore. In a way crimson flower is the best route gameplay wise, since it kinda ends around the time i'd usually start to get burnt out of the monastery.

My favourite way to play 3H is to try and make every unit as powerful as they can be and give everyone about the same amount of investment (some units have way simpler/easier builds than others) even if its weaker units like Caspar, Raphael, or Mercedes. I usually end up with a team of units that absolutely require each other to overcome the difficulty of the final maps but are still interesting and capable of their own unique contributions, it really makes the it feel like all the monastery parts and time spent on every student add up to something.

I'm in the middle with 3H. I think it's a fun game, but not one I can go back to a lot. After experiencing all 4 routes, definitely the main fun is doing interesting challenge runs of it. I do agree it is very satisfying to plan out. I didn't do *nearly* as much planning as Mekkah and Raisins are doing, but I had a maddening GD run where once I actually sat down and made some rough plans, it all started to fall into place in the end. I think though part 2 will always drag once all of your units are in their final state, because then tutoring is just kind of....extra, but there's still a large chunk of the game left. 3H is probably also the best FE game to just kinda meme around in? I took my completed Maddening file, then turned into a normal NG+ where I just...dumped everything into Lysithea so she could solo Nemesis. For no other reason than I thought it was funny to see stupid large damage numbers as I fed stat booster after stat booster to her, and boosting her magic to insane degrees.

So what I found frustrating with 3H and also with Engage is that you just really aren’t given much information upfront when making complex decisions. Both games benefit strongly from having a plan in mind for unit builds. The skills to acquire, when to do so, who to support. So unless you’re making some sheet to keep track of these things, then you just start getting frustrated because you didn’t know that this character unlocks this weapon skill or that you want to take a dip in this class quickly before going to this other class. If you do all that planning then the game kinda starts to operate on rails. There’s a lot less spontaneity. And my favorite moments in Fire Emblem is when things DON’T go according to plan. Reinforcements that I forgot about, a 84% hit rate missing. There’s a lot of micromanaging before battles coupled with AoE skill effects leading to you moving around maps in clusters. The game just feels stiff despite the limitless options if that makes any sense

This was interesting. I also started a new Blue Lions maddening in the past couple months and followed the same arc of loving 3H at launch, souring on it over time, and recently rediscovering my enthusiasm for it. But for me the monastery remains my least favorite part of the game, in the early game I find the volume of decisions I need to make exhausting and a few chapters into part 2 the monastery is feeling like such a chore that I’m tempted to just rest on every weekend I don’t have paralogues to do. I’ve certainly enjoyed optimizing my time and watching my builds come together, but I maintain that 3H and Engage are at the upper limit of how much non map gameplay I’m willing to put up with in an FE game. What I’ve found uniquely impressive about 3H is the writing, both the quality and quantity of it. Some of the late game twists reframe earlier moments in the story in interesting ways, the supports are so varied and having recruited more characters from other houses this time I’m seeing dialogue for kind of weird scenarios where I didn’t expect my choices to be acknowledged so directly. It’d be impressive for any game, but especially an FE game. Contrast it with SoV treating Sonya like every other minor character despite her direct family members all being bosses, or Fates importing Dragon Ball’s hyperbolic time chamber to hand wave your characters’ children being recruitable units. Back to this video though, from a gameplay perspective I enjoy Fates more than 3H, and I’ll probably be wondering for a while why that is. I start a new Conquest run because there’s a character I want to try a weird build with, so it’s an easy decision what to do with Corrin at the character creator and I enjoy planning out my other pairings. In 3H though, even if I know what builds I’m going for, I really deliberate on how to balance time with the students and time investing in Byleth, what skills to invest in first, and who’s most in need of tutoring. And I’ll be doing so constantly until everyone’s builds are done and these mechanics stop mattering. Maybe I fret more than you do over the potential waste of time, or maybe I need to dig in and really plan things out even more granularly. It could also just be decision fatigue, I said I find the choices exhausting, maybe if I was investing in fewer units I’d find the game more fun.

Since I've come to the conclusion that 3H is just not a game that desires to be something In personally enjoy. Both gameplaywise and storywise, and that's ok. I may get irritated by the fandom being a bit.....mucyh at times, but I am still happy they can find enjoyment in it, even if I wish that Engage specifically hadn't been treated unfairly because of the game.

The Engage Somniel might actually be worse than the Monastery, since Monastery optimization is a lot more interesting than Somniel optimization. And yes, Somniel optimization is basically mandatory to complete your builds, due to the Well giving you a bunch of SP, which you need an absurd number of bond fragments to make optimal use of. There is actually strategy in optimizing the Monastery, as this playthrough has shown. On the other hand, Somniel optimization just consists of spamming brain dead activities such as petting the dog, playing dumb mini games, petting rings and spamming a more tedious fishing system once you rigged the right fish to appear. And don't even get me started on the ring gacha. I still like Engage more though, as I prefer the actual map to map gameplay and music over three houses.

The monastery breaking up the combat is why I love the game so much and why I have only been able to finish one other FE game ever while I’ve played 3H a million times. I can’t do back to back combat, it’s too boring and repetitive. Being able to do something else in between makes the combat more fun when it happens for me. This is why the game was more popular than the average FE game tbh.

Ah the video about enjoying 3 houses again but spends the majority of the time complaining about it. Jokes aside, I agree that this game has a lot of intrigue in the planning stages. Especially early on where you are actively rewarded for seeking out good builds and executing unique strategies. The issue for me is always the back half of the game. Especially and immensely so for Maddening mode, as I always end up disengaging with any of the map design. It always feels impossible to get through stages without doing some sort of complicated warp/stride strat to either skip the map or atleast trivialize it, and in most cases has a lot less to do with my macro decisions with units and planning for them. There are exceptions of course, you could argue its a skill issue too and maybe it is to some degree, but what I enjoy most about fire emblem is working with what i have coming up with unique strategies based on my run through. When all my run throughs rely on the exact same strategy of warping and striding to a throne or boss at the end game, it makes units feel less unique and like I had wasted any investment trying to do anything else. A game with 4 routes that all ultimately boil down to the same thing is really just 1 route with a different coat of paint. Atleast with fates I could complain about the individual route's issues, but here its all just a mesh in my brain and everythings the same.
@scrubian5425
@scrubian5425 4 дня назад
This is also not a cry about how stride/warp is too powerful, its more about how centralizing it is to every successful strategy. Other strategies just dont really work, especially given the unfair and broken same turn reinforcements late game throws at you. Better to just end the map turn 1 than ever think about engaging with the reinforcements.

Mekkah, I am glad you came around to enjoying the game from a planning perspective; that's how I have always enjoyed it, even when you execute you plans and your custom unit builds and you are forced to scramble when something goes wrong i.e. stat screwed units, etc. Also that you have so many characters to choose from you can try many different combinations. My 2nd Blue Lions run was supposed to be my "last" because I thought my planning improvements from the 1st run made the "ultimate" run, but I kept having more nuanced ideas into it that by the end, I simply had to do a 3rd BL run at some point since there were things I wanted to change further. I undersstand the longtime FE player disdain, however, there is a charm in the more static play that forcuses more on the strategy of battles. Had I not been a Persona player, maybe I too wouldn't like the Monastery just like those veteran players. I do enjoy the social aspect of the game just as a bit of a break in the chessboard action, and I think it also encourages players to use units they want to regardless of optimization, mixed in with units that do make the gameplay easier. I think between 3H and earlier entries, they could make another game on the 3H engine and bring back some missed mechanics and perhaps delete some that weren't popular - I don't think Engage quite gave everybody what they wanted as a successor to 3H. Footnote: If it wasn't for RNG levels and units stat screwed and/or blessed, I never would have been prompted to try alternate ideas, like Ingrid Dancer, Hero Balthus, or Sniper Catherine. Or Holy Knight Bernadetta or Fortress Knight Lorenz.
