After Daenerys frees them I think there's a line that says for to ones who didn't use their birth names, a lot chose the names of flowers. Which is sweet in my mind because they have been robbed of anything beautiful in their eyes but the things they come to closest are flowers
This was in the books, yup. They used to sell them by the score, but the masters realized it gave the unsullied a bad look because they'd often become palace guards and the only vice allowed was food. Something like that anyway
Qohor It's pretty far away. I'm pretty sure it's on the northern side of the continent. It makes me wonder if they sailed all the way around or if there was some other path they took through the dothraki sea
I'll say this, i did ferl like he should've killed Jon and Tyrion, no way they live after what they did. But that's on the writers of course. Other than that, i still liked him and thought he was likable, I completely understood and even expected hi to be vengeful.
Dunno, they fight in squadrons or groups after all. As long as the officers know and answer to their names, you don't need to remember the name of every single soldier to order a squad to advance, lock shields or get in formation.
Pre modern warfare was not as individualized as it is nowadays. Back then all you had to know was where what part of the army is and where you want them. Often the general would ride back in forth across formations to do this
No, not the world. Alexander the great didn't make it past India. Nor did he make it to Britain. Even counting the Roman infantry as a phalanx it didn't conquer the world. Furthermore there's plenty of terrain where it wouldn't work.
@@neilbodwell9172 If you're rating tactics overall then yes the phalanx and anything similar is the best in the world at that time. That's a formation though not a description of the individual fighting men in the formation. Of course the spearmen that make up a phalanx individually are nothing compared to an Indian war elephant for example. The phalanx is still the best.
This video is so necessary for this lore just to remind us all that some of the most badass mofos out there have endured the indescribable to become what they are. Unsullied are one of the many sad, gut wrenching and despicable stories told by the master Martin 🙏🏾
@@thebystander1636 Gotta have the classic « killing of a dog » cuz you can’t make the perfect soldier without it. Martin really know how to make the Masters the epitome of pieces of shit !
I assume as far as show canon goes, once work gets out that the Dragon Queen is dead slavery will return to Essos and the Unsullied program will be reinstated.
Yeah because none of the survivors had reason to maintain those changes. Everything she did died with her and House Targaryen dies when Jon/Aegon dies if he even can.
@@Brandonhayhew True... the key is too make it last longer than 2 generation. Let the old guard die out and the new one will become indoctrinated into the new way of life. That’s why a heir is so important to consolidate the change.
@@thegreatpage5912 there were things like that too, for Example: Great khan had grandsons and sons that eventually divided his empire, and Saladin successor had to deal with his civil war in his empire, Charlemagne son and successor had to deal with the civil war in the empire that his father made. He eventually divided into three empires. Even if there was heir and consolidations, the empire collapses will always be inevitable.
The books really are great. I have listened to all 5 at least 5 times each lol The guy who played Halen the Pyromancer in the show (Roy Dotrice) does the audio books. He is... Unique. But I've grown to love him. RIP Roy
@@AshwinMisra its an acronym for A Storm of Swords, the third book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series(the book series that game of thrones is adapting).
Honestly, I wish we got to see more than just unsullied serve as Daenerys's soldiers. While we have the Shavepates in the books, I think it would have been cool to see her organize a proper military from the local people in order to build up her power. Perhaps these soldiers could be trained in the way of the unsullied, just with less animal slaying and murder.
It would end up being like he empire after Order 66. The old clone troppers would begin to phase out of usefulness in place of just paying new soldiers again.
This is similar to the castrato in classical music. Castrated at childhood to retain high pitch voice that was highly desirable to composers and church of the time.
It just came to me when you were talking about the Unsullied goddess Lady of Spears and burning there bits to her. Varys is a eunuch who had his parts cutoff and burned and knows Illyrio who had fat unsullied. To much coincidence for me and I have a feeling there is something more about this.
Idk how well the unsullied would do against mounted knights and their heavily armoured horses, the Dothraki nearly took them out with their cav and their cav is way less armoured and heavy
The odds were 3000 Unsullied vs 30,000 Dothraki and the Unsullied won. Dany had 10,000 Unsullied AND ~20,000 Dothraki vs depleted and exhausted Westerosi armies
No they weren’t, It was only 300 Spartans but they had 1100 other Greek allies with them, but 700 of them guarding the goat pass heard that the Persians were attacking their homes so they left the Spartans to go defend their homes and afterwards their other allies lost their courage leaving only the Spartans to defend the pass on the last day and by then they had less than 300
That was the show anything in the show doesn’t count cuz it isn’t cannon, and this is important because in the books the only depleted kingdoms are the storm lands and north ( the river lands are broken and bent but not depleted in terms of manpower). So if Danny crosses with the unsullied, which she only has 8000 of and honestly by now it’s probably less uf the unsullied are held in place by infantry while the armoured knights (about 4000 would do) slamming into the rear like a hammer and anvil, that could definitely break them appart from their formation and and cause major casualties, especially since the knights have 12 feet long lances compared to 8 feet long spears (it is t said how long their spears are but for most historical phalanx like armies like the unsullied their spears were 8 feet long) so the knights have the weight, speed, reach, and shock ability. Definitely winnable
What I find interesting about them is that they're the only group of people that we know of that didn't have a single member get sick from the plague in Mereen, even after being the ones that take care of the corpses
I think this video makes it kinda clear why the unsullied all follow Danny. Not because they believe in her (like many dany stans want to think) but because their will is so broken to the masters by the time they are trained that they don’t know what else to do with their freedom. They’ve known nothing but fighting since they were 5, murdered their own puppy at 6 and a new born baby to “graduate”. At least at first they would follow their master who is Dany as she bought them. Maybe in time some will take a different path but it wouldn’t be for a while
I don’t think it’s the end of the unsullied, the first thing the freed slaves of astapor was to make more, when the masters took over again the first thing they did was make more lol.
I played a lot of Game of Thrones crusader kings 2 mod, And I never really purchased Unsullied Until I played as the iron islands. I only bring it up because it's amusing to me that an Iron islands Lord could potentially hire but potentially higher a group of these soldiers there's and then proceed to use them as a sea raiding force. Mechanically speaking, the game doesn't consider soldiers getting older and dying of old age, which makes sense but also can lead to some weird things like a group of hired slaves making it through generations of lords With absolutely no fluctuation of numbers. That being said I do find it amusing that out of all of my soldiers, even amongst trips trips where thousands upon thousands of them starved on the sea, Only a couple of them would have been my Unsullied. Even in video game form they are pretty bad-ass
i feel like the unsullied as we see them will truly be gone but the unsullied more brutal way of life will be gone but not their discipline not their goddess and i hope they will do more with it,
For such a renowned force of warriors the Dothraki really fight like shit. Explain to me how heavy infantry take down horse archers with no ranged attack?
Greyworm was the worst character on the show, in my opinion, the actor made every scene cringe and personally i just did not like it. However, in the books he is amazing and actually has meaning.
I would assume he was meant to come off that way intentionally. Remember he's basically a human robot without emotions for most of his life. It's like an awkward adult making legit friends for the first time.
His diminutive stature also makes sense. Sexual dimorphisms in males such as increased muscle mass, heigh, broader skeletons and an increase to body/ facial hair are products of testosterone. Their balls are removed well before puberty. Consequently, this is also why the unsullied are just dumb as a concept
@@thegreatpage5912 Exactly lol how is someone like the Unsullied not supposed to be strange in terms of personality and behavior. They had no childhood, have felt no love or friends and a typical conversation between Unsullied soldiers probably consists of grunts, head nods and angry stares.
There's a good reason why most men who were castrated during past history did not become soldiers. A male needs his package and the testosterone that that creates to grow strong and fast. The unsullied would never really work out in the real world. I think for the most part George Martin pulls from a lot of European history but he's kind of taking a flyer on this one. Castrati have mostly been either bureaucrats like in China or entertainers like in medieval Europe.. other than China and some of the caliphates I don't believe there's been any wide scale castration throughout history. I could be missing something though. I know that there hasn't been any castrated armies. BTW. Janissaries were never castrated although guards of the harem were..
