Ah - the Hymer Aktiv bed - too hard for some and just right for others. After several tries of various inserts, toppers and blow-up mattress pads, I found the perfect solution for me - smaller bed equals more room [which makes me a happy traveler in my class b camper van named Betty]
I used a new RV mattress which is a great alternative for those looking for something softer than the Hymer Aktiv mattress. I also decided to change the framework of the bed. I didn’t need such a large queen size bed and I also wanted to add additional storage [not that there’s already tons of storage in the Hymer Aktiv 1.0 that I have and even more in the Hymer Aktiv 2.0], but I wanted to add an effective way for me to easily access things without having to reach into the under cabinetry, and I also needed to make an adjustment to the framework to house some long equipment in what was originally unused space.
My solution was making a super simple frame that sits permanently in the back area of the bed setup and allows easy access underneath with the use of gas struts. The frame is a double or twin size which is big enough for me and this allows for more standing room in the back area of the coach.
It’s also designed to allow for the air conditioning to be funneled under the bed to the doggie safe place I’ve created for when I’m not in the RV. This ensures that Alfie, my little rescue dog, is comfortable while I’m gone.
My Hymer Aktiv 1.0 is fully loaded with solar systems, lithium batteries, an underhood generator and the volt start system, which all aids in keeping the temps stable in the camper van. I think this little bed setup is an added bonus to this system and perfect for solo travellers with pets.
This is a video showing you what I did [it ended up being rather long in my attempt to be thorough]. What started out as a temporary test of my design has worked out so well it’s still in place. And an added bonus . . . with the use of trays that fit the spacing between the cabinetry bases perfectly, I now have sliding surfaces that act as storage and additional work space for the kitchen . . . YAY double YAY . . .
