HOW MUCH STUFF can your RV carry // RV WEIGHT & RATINGS // Explained // GVWR GAWR OCCCR worksheet

How much does your RV weigh? Why is this so important and how to find the answer. I walk through all the gobbledygook acronyms that are used to talk about various RV ratings and show you just how easy is it to figure it all out.
Why should we care about all this . . . Safety and Money.
On an Rv worst case scenario it can be a huge safety hazard which could be catastrophic and best case scenario it’ll just be expensive, because - as we know - stuff will wear or break if overstressed.
What should we do about all this . . . pay attention and know your limits [as in how much stuff you can haul about] and learn how to distribute your stuff for maximum efficiency and safety.
Ratings - is determined by the manufacturer indicating the maximum limits of the vehicle
Weights is the amount of weight of a given item and Loads is the amount of weight carried by a specific area of the vehicle.
GVW [Gross Vehicle Weight] is how much everything weighs - if you load your vehicle and weigh it this is the GVW
Add the R GVWR - that’s the maximum number your vehicle is RATED for which also includes the tongue weight for anything that you’re towing.
GAW [Gross Axle Weight] is the load of your axles. It is important to note the rating for all the individual axles of your RV, but if you really want to get knit picky about it all you should really know the weight for each side of each axle - ideally those numbers are used to adjust your tire pressure [which is a whole other video].
So mostly we just want to know how much stuff we can haul about right - that’s called your Cargo Carrying Capacity CCC.
I include a worksheet that you can use to figure out your CCC and then show you how easy it is to use the CATSCALE.COM app to get your RV weight.
I don’t know enough about the whole towing-hitch-distribution-torque-pitch-conundrum of trailer and fifth wheel RV’s yet, so that can be addressed in another video. This one is intended for camper vans and motorhomes, but most of the information here can apply to all RVS.

Hello Karen, thank you. Yes, Betty was within her limits, but I am going to fill the freshwater tank up next time just to make sure that the rear axle rating is good (worked out mathematically on paper with overall ratings).

Good morning from New Hampshire. First off... love the ears! 😼 Very helpful information overall. We are buying a 15' teardrop. A Bushmaster Plus 15FK. It is so small, I don't "think" we can pack much in it, but will now be conscious of weight distribution. I will ask if the dealership will calculate the weight of full liquid tanks, plus propane. We know the dry weight is 1900 and the max capacity it 3000, but as you said, that 1100 lb includes full tanks! I called a Toyota dealership prior to camper shopping, gave them the VIN number of my older Tacoma 4x4 and asked what I could tow. They said around 6000. The tongue weight is 260. Where is that stress coming from? Am going to assume that most of our "stuff" will be in tubs in the back of the long bed. Those I can weigh individually. How am I doing so far? I honestly don't think we can pack much in the camper, except maybe clothes across the back dining seat and a couple tubs, secured on the floor in the center isle. Jim & I are new to hard shell campers, so this will be a mini adventure for us. We decided to start small. We can always upgrade. We like your Class B, but will need to factor out the cost between buying a good used Class-B or upgrading to a larger camper and tow vehicle. Thanks for this video! ~ Diane

2016 F350 Crew Cab Long Bed Dual wheel 4X4 3.73 Axle . Published GCVR is 32,100. Publish Max fifth wheel towing Capacity is 23,500. my truck weighs 8786 from door sticker ( GVWR 14000 maximum paylod capacity from sticker 5314). 23500 +8786 = 32,386 which is over the GCVR I would have to take the bumper off and let the truck drive itself not to be violation the published weights if pulling maximum published fifth wheel weight . Can someone explain this to me. the published GCVWR for my truck is much less than the GVWR 14,000 + the Maximum published towing capacity of 23,500 = 37,500 diff of 5400 over the GCVR . Help me understand.

You don't need to add in your gray tank and cassette toilet because you would normally start out with those being empty and adding to them from your fresh water tank. This should give you quite a bit more CCC.
@CrazyLadyCrankyDog

Hi John, good point, thanks 🤔
@zzterri
@zzterri 5 лет назад
Would you also have to remember to empty your grey water tank before topping off your fresh water tank? (Haven't done this yet but trying to figure it out)
@CrazyLadyCrankyDog
@CrazyLadyCrankyDog 5 лет назад
@@zzterri The tanks are independent of each other and they both have gauges that show you how full they are. I like to travel with my tanks as empty as possible to conserve fuel consumption (water weighs approx 8lbs per gallon) and put fresh water into my tanks when I reach my destination or if boondocking as close to my destination as possible. I empty my grey tanks whenever I can. Remember that not all your fresh water will go into your grey tank as you use some for toilet flushing and also for drinking and cooking etc.

Thank you for this topic! I'm in the research stages and was looking at the Hymer Aktiv 2.0...it's specs say the OCCCR is 750 lbs. That wouldn't leave much with 2 adults and 2 dogs. The Aktiv 1.0 says the OCCCR is 1300 lbs which is almost double your "how much stuff your RV can carry" compared to the Aktiv 2.0. Am I understanding this correctly?
@CrazyLadyCrankyDog
@CrazyLadyCrankyDog 5 лет назад
Hi Terri, I see these numbers came from the Hymer NA Spec sheets - so if there are no typos then yes, you are understanding that correctly - keep in mind that I was working out how much stuff other than people and water etc I could put into my vehicle - the OCCCR includes those figures I backed out of my equation. It is interesting that the Aktiv2.0 has a lower rating than the 1.0 and I'm wondering if those specs are the sofabed version which may have more weight to it or if the added cabinetry weighs that much more to explain the differential? Not sure. But the info from this manufacturer has not been consistent which is why I recommend actually weighing a vehicle for accurate computations.
@zzterri
@zzterri 5 лет назад
I think you are right about the power sofa bed option with Aktiv 2.0. I just read the Seating Capacity is "up to 7 with power sofa bed". So, does that mean 145 * 7 (instead of 145 * 4)?
@CrazyLadyCrankyDog
@CrazyLadyCrankyDog 5 лет назад
In theory, but the big question really is how many passengers are you planning to transport and then use that number as your multiplier.

I am not sure why you use filters to change the look of the videos. Please consider filming normally, as I would love to see what you have to contribute about this lifestyle since I am considering it. But I can't watch this the way it is filmed. Sorry. Good Luck.

Hi Shelah, I did initially get a lot of feedback about my original stylization and have subsequently made changes to my "look" to ensure that they are more readable. Sorry to hear that it is still too much for you to enjoy the content. Thanks for your input.
