When I was a small kid in Reading, utility bodied OB buses (OWB) sometimes were used as "relief" buses by the Corporation- they were Smith's Coaches vehicles. A few years alter when we had our school trip to London, two coaches pulled up outside the school- one was an OB and many kids did not want to get into it as they thought it was an old crock. The other coach was late 50s and forward control! Today, everybody would pile into the OB!
Gorgeous bus. The Bedford OB has always been my favourite style of bus. Would have loved to hear something about the trials and tribulations of the restoration process.
Beautiful restoration inside and out. Looks quite luxurious with a lovely paint job. Britain's roads are quite narrow in many places, so driving a coach on the secondary roads must take a lot of skill.
Lost count of the number of miles I've travelled in Bedford OB's as a schoolboy. Great restoration, and even managed to recognise some of the landmarks as I worked in Kidsgrove in the 1970's and lived just outside Crewe
Great sight, great sound, great fun and no doubt a great smell of old vehicle if I was there. Credit to the original coach builders and to Mr Machin for saving her. Many thanks
Great Bus. The last time I travelled on a Bedford OB must have been in 1960. The bus to St Joseph's school in dagenham I can still even remember the wonderful smell
As one of the previous comment said. Very pretty seeing this lovely old Bedford coach on its short run, but it was NOT a restoration, plus the music was an irritation. Better to hear the engine and gear changes AND to see how they got it to this lively state
When I was at secondary school in the 50s I think that it was one of these that I travelled to school in. Until I figured out that if I left for school earlier I could run to school and pocket the bus fare my mother gave me. Beautiful bus though.
lovely bus, from an era when motorists were not neurotic. That and the morris minor, two happy vehicles when people went out and felt happy bright and gay. yes gay ie happy.
GWS 139 Bedford OB Duple C29F Chassis No 111861 Body No 54299 New to Read & Mackay, Edinburgh 7/49 by 6/80 disused with Morris, Cilrew - mobile shop 12/88 Rex Machin, Stoke on Trent - preservation Superb restoration, superb piece of filming, liked the bit where the modern bus pulled alongside. Just happened apparently & not staged.
S J Morris Cilfrew (my uncle) ran a fleet of four OBs in the 1970s. They were always well maintained but coach interiors were completely removed. Great to see one restored - and to a high standard.
My nan used to take me on day trips using those Bedford coaches. I had seats near the front so I could watch the driver double de clutch with the crash gear box. The music was a nuisance though.
Thanks for the comment. Check out Tommy Emmanuel, "One day" and "Half way home". Also Emil Ernebro "Honey Suckle Rose". These tunes and plenty more on youtube. Two of the best fingerstyle guitarists you will find.
I drove one 1947 with a convertible LANGWORTH cattle waggon body ,lovely brakes some moaned about brakes but that was because they were OVERLOADED, If they could get it ON they would take it ??
Splendid video of this lovely old coach- thank you for uploading. Would you have any objection if I were to use fragments of the audio from this and other of your videos as sound effects in a free, open-source non-commercial computer game called Simutrans under the terms of the Artistic Licence 1.0 (opensource.org/licenses/Artistic-1.0? This contains a good, clean recording of a Bedford OB pulling away from a stand. I should happily credit you, of course.
Crazy is crazy I know , happy metal molecules , kind of like holy water, I think the ghost of Richard Wright was riding that bus. Dark Side of The Bus, best bus by boundless boulevards , this bus blossoms with bounteous bounties , for one's brain.
