This symphony is called 'Eroica' because Beethoven originally dedicated it to Napoleon, whom Beethoven thought was a man of the people. But Beethoven tore out the symphony's dedication page when he learned that Napoleon had declared himself Emperor.

Beethoven is the ultimate musical Architect. Vitruvius, 1st century BC Roman architect and engineer, known for his multi-volume work entitled 'De Architectura' originated the idea that all buildings should have three attributes: "Strength", "Utility", and "Beauty" (firmitas, utilitas, and venustas). And also gives six principles of Architecture: Order, Arrangement, Eurythmy (beauty found in proportion), Symmetry, Propriety (perfection based on adherence to architectural principles), and Economy. "Music is liquid architecture; architecture is frozen music.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe It's as if Beethoven takes the most majestic architectural wonders and converts them into sound.

Man you are so right this has to be listened to many many times. I've listened to this piece hundreds of times over the last 20 years or so and it only keeps getting BETTER with each listen. This is one of the most influential works in the history of music. Who knows what the course of musical history would have been if Beethoven didn't compose this piece. And when you listen again try the context of the "hero" is Beethoven himself, overcoming his deafness and suicidal thoughts to keep pushing us onward! The 3rd movement starts on the same last note of the second movement's funeral march, meaning, "I'm back baby!!"

This being the best piece of music ever created can be debated (most probably Beethoven’s 9th would take that spot), but it is for certain the most influential piece is the history of music. Through his 3rd symphony, "Eroica," Beethoven opened the door to never before seen forms of pure expression and transfer of raw emotion through this symphony's revolutionary structure, orchestration, dynamic range and heavy use of dissonance and development of themes. I would suggest you watch on RU-vid the movie "Beethoven’s Eroica". That shows just how much this piece of music shattered the formality and regulations of the early 18th century and Classical Period, thrusting the world into the Romantic Period.

Some odd comments here about the performance, when there's nothing wrong with it - indeed, for a recording made in the late 1950s it holds up very well. Ferenc Fricsay was a great conductor, and you can't go wrong with the Berlin Philharmonic at this point in its history.
@ModusVivendiMedia
@ModusVivendiMedia Год назад
The second movement is a funeral march. "Eroica" means "heroic". This was originally intended as an ode to Napoleon Bonaparte. But after Napoleon declared himself Emperor (the music was already complete), Beethoven scratched out the dedication at the top of the score (leaving a hole in the paper), and simply called it the "heroic" symphony.

Beethoven produces symphonies with a lot of energy with a lot of climaxes, so it's important to get recordings which show these aspects of his music, or we lose a lot of content. I prefer Karajan, Abbado or Bernstein recording of these symphonies, but sometimes Karajan put excessive energy on that, which is a problem too.

I didn't really "get" this piece for a long time. I mean I basically understood it, and generally liked it, I just didn't love it immediately the way I did the other Beethoven symphonies, particularly the opening section of the first movement. It just seemed a bit awkward and strange, in a way that I didn't really "feel". (The finale of the 7th symphony also gives me this sort of awkward feeling.) It didn't seem to be because I didn't know the music: I had played it in university orchestra (rehearsing it for probably 8-10 weeks), and owned two different recordings of it (I think Haitink/Concertgebouw and Hogwood/Academy of Ancient Music), neither of which changed my opinion of the opening. Then, around 1989 I think, Decca released the San Francisco Symphony's recording of it (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-q6r0NlcLZbw.html) conducted by their then-music director Herbert Blomstedt. I got the CD (which also has Symphony No. 1), as I did all their other recordings, out of a sort of sense of duty to support my hometown orchestra, but not really expecting "greatness". But to my surprise, not only was it very well played and recorded, but I GOT it. From the first chords, I was like "ah, so THAT's how it goes!" and I loved every second of it, and still do. There was something about the pacing, tempo, forward energy, etc. with which Blomstedt approached the music that made so much more sense than the other recordings I'd heard. It suddenly felt right in ways it hadn't before. (Sadly, this is the only Beethoven they recorded together.) (While this Fricsay/Berlin performance is very good overall, I still like Blomstedt/SFS quite a bit better, in all four movements.) Incidentally, I had the exact same experience with the Blomstedt/SFS recording of Sibelius's Symphony No. 2, after two other very different recordings - conducted by Karajan and Bernstein - failed me. (On the other hand, I prefer Karajan over Blomstedt for Sibelius's symphonies 5-7.)

You should react to Wagner. I know he's a racist piece of sh*t, but it doesn't get into his music at least. I still love Kanye despite his recent weirdness. We shouldn't only subscribe to the idea that only "nice people" compose great music. Start with Wagner's Lohengrin Overture or Parsifal overture. Even his Liebestod sung by the great black soprano Jessye Norman.

A recording that leaves out the repeat of the exposition in the first movement of the Eroica is not worth listening to. Nothing destroys the balance of that movement more than ignoring the repeat. I don't understand why some conductors don't understand such a simple concept. The Exposition (played only once like in this recording) has 151 bars. The Development has 245 bars The Recapitulation + Coda has 293 bars. Looking at these numbers it should be glaringly obvious that in order to keep a balance between the 3 parts the expostion needs to be repeated so that it has 302 bars.
