Beethoven: Violinkonzert ∙ hr-Sinfonieorchester ∙ Patricia Kopatchinskaja ∙ Philippe Herreweghe 

She plays almost the entire concerto "sul tasto". But then she has an astonishing sul tasto that produces an incredible sound. It is an original performance, and in some interviews she has said that there are enough very good more traditional performances, that she should not be expected to produce yet another copy of that. She's a true artist.

It's the most rare version I have ever heard: different sounds, different tempo and a very special soloist! Really amazing!

She is beautifully mad. In another place. I think her folk music background tempers the classical May God bless you Patricia 🙏🙏

The first movement cadenza is quite possibly my favourite of all time - this is such a great performance!

I think Patricia gave us an opportunity to enjoy Beethoven's marvelous work as if we were the contemporary audience with him. It's fresh like a new composition. Though whether it is based on historical record or Beethoven's intention seems controversial I appreciate her challenge. I'm very happy to have found her :)

The more I listen to this, the more I love it. That cadenza is thoroughly original. She starts a duel with a chello who is quickly supported by two more chellos. Then a discussion with the timpani until a single violin challenges her, strong discussion until it slowly brings her back to reason and Beethoven's incredible melody. Brilliant!

She does her own ornaments. Very original performance. The participation of orchestra musicians in the cadenza is not without precedent. In the Gidon Kramer performance (with Harnoncourt) a piano suddenly breaks in unexpectedly. She also reminds me what Glenn Gould who said about playing the "Emperor". Why play it like 25 other performers?

Patricia Kopatchinskaja is a bundle of creative energy with a beautiful sound and technical prowess to match. She has a vitality to her which I am sure affects those around her. She is a poet with words and music. Beethoven was a big proponent of change and progress in Music . I think he would have loved this performance. This concerto is a very tender piece and Patricia understands its emotional core. I have listened to many performances of this concerto and this one ranks as special, unique and up at the top.

I want to tip my hat to the administrators of this channel for including the audience ovation at the conclusion of the piece. When a performance thrills me as much as this one I feel so helpless for not being able to convey my appreciation to the artists involved. Being able to watch them get that reward from the lucky people in the concert hall provides some compensation. 😊

Es war eine große Freude, Patricia Kopatchinskaja am 14. Jan 2015 mit diesem Werk in der Münchner Philharmonie zu hören, begleitet vom SWR-Symphonieorchester unter Sir Roger Norrington. Sie faszinierte mit einer lyrischen, im weiten Passagen geradezu engelszarten Interpretation, die es erlaubte, das Werk ganz neu in seinem Wesenskern zu erfahren. Dabei gab sie nicht die im Vordergrund stehende Virtuosin, sondern wandte sich oft den Instrumentengruppen des Orchesters zu, wodurch sie den Geist gemenisamen Musizierens beschwor. Die zu Beethovens Zeit übliche Freiheit des Solisten, Kadenzen und Übergänge selbst zu gestalten, nutzte die studierte Komponistin in legitimer Weise. Besonders beindruckte mich ihre Fassung der Kadenz des ersten Satzes, in die sie den Solocellisten, dann die ganze Cellogruppe, die Pauke und schließlich die Konzertmeisterin einbezog. Mit diesem kammermusikalischen Ansatz, der auf Skizzen für die Kadenz der Klavierkonzertfassung des Werks beruht, ist ihr m.E. etwas ganz Außergewöhnliches gelungen. Patricia Kopatchinskaja, die ich in diesem Konzert zum fünften Male live erlebte, kann sich meiner ganz großen Hochachtung gewiss sein!

Thank you for living Patricia Kopatchinskaja. You jumped, you danced, you cried, you sang, you laughed and you loved - that is what music and life calls us to do and you did this for us and not for you. To give your heart and touch the hearts and souls of others is true artistry and true humanity. Many knowledgeable listeners and musicians will have found this performance challenging. I know this piece very well and have played this piece many times (not so well!) and have had the privilege to see many live performances played by among others Perleman, Zukerman, Menuhin, Hahn, Vengerov, Mutter, Repin, Rachlin, Schumsky, Mintz, Rosand, Ricci and I have studied many recordings of Heifetz, Neveu, Oistrakh, Kreisler, Rabin, Milstein to name only a well known small proportion of a much larger number. Many of these true virtuoso giants ascended the music and touched our hearts but few reached into the soul - perhaps Menuhin's recording with Furtwangler in 1947 achieved this feat. However, this girl is a wonder - she made herself, her heart and soul, available and made Beethoven available to us and to our hearts and souls through a deep appreciation of the score(s) and a willingness to abandon certain traditional conventions. This is the very essence of artistry. The fact is that each musician brings their own personality into their playing and therefore is unique but to bring the personality of the composer to the audience this is a rare experience. This incredible artist has a deep understanding gifted to a very few that enables her to really understand and she is gifted also with an extraordinary technique that enables her to unlock the personal expression of the musician together with the interpretation of the composer. It is a unique performance and I am truly grateful.

I am very happy to enjoy Patricia Kopatchinskaja playing the Beetvoven concerto in Munich tonight! For me, her new appoach of interpretation is so fascinating! Above all, I love her brilliant idea to arrange the cadenza of Beethovens piano concerto version of this opus as a violin duo.

In the last four decades, I have tried dozens of recordings of Op. 61 by various players. But never before has any players attracted so much attention from me as Kopatchinskaja has done, not even the Oistrach’s 1950 Moscow recording with Gauk. It opens up another dimension of Beethoven. Her interpretation as well as her stage style is the exact opposite of Oistrach: one is Stoic and self-centered, the other is passionate and interacting; one is pure joy, the other is delirious excitement. They will form the core of my collection of Op. 61; the rest are secondary. Her courage to challenge the tradition should be encouraged, since this is where our liberal value rests upon. Hat off to Kopatchinskaja!

Unglaublich !! Was soll man da noch sagen - ich bin zu tiefst berührt. Mir laufen echt die Tränen. Endlich mal eine Geigerin, die Musik transportiert und nicht Noten - mit einer solchen Tiefen. Ausserdem spielt sie mit dem Orchester, und dreht dabei dem Publikum auch gerne mal den Rücken zu. Einfach grossartig. Beethoven lebt in seiner Musik weiter - vielen, vielen Dank Patricia !!

Ich bin ein LvB-Fan und habe seit meinem 16.Lebensjahr dieses Konzert am Klavier bzw. Violine zig Mal von verschiedensten Interpreten gehört und finde es immer wieder faszinierend, wie Kopatschinskaya die Kadenz mit sehr viel Gefühl und Virtuosität hinüber transformiert. Als ich Sie zum ersten Mal LvB Violinkonzert spielen hörte, habe ich das Gefühl gehabt, ich höre diese Konzert zum ersten Mal in meinem Leben. Ich bin von Ihr begeistert, auch wenn leichte Unsicherheitenimmer wieder passieren. Ich möchte Sie auch mal "Live" erleben. Das ist für mich ein Traum!

Five minutes in and I was absolutely HATING it! I was throwing rotten tomatoes at my Apple synched large screen tv. Then I poured myself a sneaky vodka, calmed down, and ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!! Fresh interpretation Ms Kopatchinskaja!!! Magnificent!!!

Extraordinary! Strange but so beautiful and interesting!

An intriguing performance. Kopatchinskaja brings extra drama to everything she plays. The cadenza is an adaptation of the cadenza Beethoven wrote for his piano arrangement of the violin concerto (as are the extra cadenzas she plays later on). The timpani is in the original but Kopatchinskaja wisely shares the extra notes with other instruments of the orchestra, which makes more sense to me than Gidon Kramer's offstage piano which comes out of nowhere. Wolfgang Schneiderhan performs it without any additional help, as close to the original as possible for a violin. Very impressive but it doesn't suit the violin the way it does the piano. Kopatchinskaja get it right, I think, if she's going to go with the piano cadenza.

This is a truly unique and original performance. Could we be hearing something closer to the original spirit of this concerto than anything we've heard before ? I'll need to listen a few more times to be 100% convinced but it sure is a real adventure and for that we should all be well excited.

I feel like this performance really evoked the spirit of Beethoven. I feel like I was stuck in a loop, almost frozen in time, reinvigorated, and then that cadenza! I'm really under the impression the cadenza was showing Patricia's humbleness, as though she and all the others participating were all one person, sharing the same body, as though they had all lived each others roles in this performance. This feeling of eternity ! I wish I could forget and re-enjoy this performance. To be there live would have for sure been death by astonishment for me! I'm not going to lie, I saw other videos of her and I kind of grinned at her performance style, for this artist we should look past it for once and listen. The more I watch of her, the more appreciation and respect for her I have. I totally dig the energy she's putting into her work. More so, the less I laugh.

Having just listened to some of an interesting compilation of soloists playing this concerto (Beethoven 250th anniversary). I was intrigued to hear more of Kopatchinskaja's Beethoven. However, beautiful was the playing of so many of the soloists involved, her short contribution intrigued me! It somehow has hints of a severity which more beautiful playing doesn't have!

So brilliant. This tops both excellent recordings of Isabella Faust and even Kopatchinskaja's own studio recording. As with most HIP performances (even though this orchestra doesn't play on old instruments) this Beethoven is so much more exciting than a traditional (romantic) interpretation: leaner, meaner, more rhythmic and Kopatchinskaja fits in just perfect. She is so varied: delicate and sweet, but also really ugly and agressive when needed. Love it!

Wow.!,Can you hear people happily shouted? I already shouted in my place too. Sure. the cadenza with the timpani (kettledrums) plays together with the soloist, and then, many things else that I have never heart before. Congratulation the orchestra, soloist with thanks.

She has a very high-risk way of doing things, and it doesn't always come off. This works brilliantly, however. The accuracy of her intonation is stunning, the variant phrases are beguiling, and her latest thoughts on the cadenza material from Beethoven's piano version of the concerto work surprisingly well. Seriously good.
