Before You Learn any Duane Allman Licks Watch This
This lick is one that sounds flashy and difficult, but it isn’t. Once you get the picking pattern down, it’s easy. Just take your time and slowly build up speed. Duane used this like on “You Don’t Love Me”, “Mountain Jam”, “Why Does Love Got To Be So Bad” and other places. It’s great to end a song or put some flair into a solo.
Duane Allman might be my favorite guitar player of all time. His play is really inspiring and has a vocal quality to it. Learn this and lots of other licks, technique, theory, patterns, and songs on my Guitar 1965-1985 Membership Site.

I remember when they used to play (for free) at Piedmont Park in Atlanta, where I grew up. As I recall, they weren't famous yet (outside of local haunts), and they were just practicing in front of an audience--which really makes a lot of sense, when you get down to it. They had the opportunity to gauge how they were coming across with their music (which was awesome, BTW). Boy, those were some days (& nights)!

Thanks Mark, one can't go wrong with a Duane Allman style lick. 50 years down the road and his guitar playing & sound is as new and fresh as way back then.

This was handy because I really should be more fluid in my up picking. I lean on downpicking too much. I didn't think about it until i watched this. Thanks again Mark.

Great explanation of this Duane gem Mark! I’m with you on Duane being my favorite guitarist of all time too. I became a Duaneaholic when I saw the original Allman Brothers at the closing show at the Fillmore East in June’71. They played until 7am and still is my greatest concert experience to this day. Duane was otherworldly that night and Dickey was on fire as well! Thanks for this and keep ‘em coming!

I would have to say that Duane's best solo ever was the live version from Fillmore East on in memory of Elizabeth Reed I am sure that be a very very difficult lesson to show
@MarkZabel
@MarkZabel 2 года назад
A great one for sure. I prefer the less extended solos. In many ways it's more challenging to have to make a real impact in 2 choruses instead of 10 choruses. But it's great for sure. It's improvised, so to me it wouldn't make sense to show the solo note for note - notwithstanding the immense amount of work simply to film the lesson. Maybe it would make sense to show the approach Duane used and maybe two or three themes from the solo as opposed to the whole thing. Would that be something you'd be interested in?
@markwarren250

@@MarkZabel thank you for your quick reply. I completely understand. while this I believe is his best solo, also a great one on the same album is whipping Post. as you say most of his life stuff is improvised. but perhaps you could take out certain parts of the solo that are remarkable and focus on that. Just an idea?

You said the magic word, "Prefer", cuz thats what its all about when listening to these other worldly players. The who's better than who, is a losers game. Dickie was a amazing. His solo in Liz Reed, starting it off with the volume swells was gorgeous. But, for my ears, Duanes soul was right there on the fret board.

Thanks for the shorts Mark, these are alot of fun to practice with. Really appriciate you playing in slow motion too( I know it's hard and a pain in the kester when your advanced like yourself) , it makes it approachable for me to watch and play along....maybe sometime you could do rambling man in small segments. Rhythm & Lead.... picked that song because we can all play that in our heads already. Love Kris IL 👍⚡🎸( looks like a new guitar????)

Clapton, Haynes, Trucks, doesn't matter. No one played with the feel and phrasing of Duane Allman. The man pulled notes from parts unknown.
@MarkZabel
@MarkZabel 2 года назад
Yeah, nobody did it better. Three things with Duane's playing ... He always had that vocal quality to his sound, he always told a story when he played, and his bends had that "smile" on the end of them. A bunch of players have one or even two of those characteristics (for instance, Dickey always takes you on a little journey in his solos ... up and down a few hills, cross a stream here and there) but to me only Duane and maybe Jeff Beck and Larry Carlton got it all. Listen to Duane's masterpiece on Stormy Monday at the Filmore. His solo is an amazing song in itself - and he does it with only 2 choruses. Nothing fast or showy. Just each and every note played with perfect tone, force and with the right notes chosen as bends ... and bent perfectly. And the whole thing is constructed (on the fly - improvised) perfectly. It sounds like a sermon, starting slowly, stretching out, and building to a beautiful crescendo. Could perhaps be equaled, but not topped. And that's just one of his ... and he died at 24. 24!
