Of Behringer's new line of synths I have the DM12D, Model D, Crave, & Neutron. The Deepmind is by far the most fun of all of these synths IMO, it sounds really great especially for the price that I got it at. I bought R angle audio and power chords so that I could put it on my rack. I love that Behringer is doing inexpensive remakes of classic synths that many of us have drooled over for years, but I look forward to more of their original synths like Deepmind and Neutron.

How would this work with melodic, mellow, sounds. I havent found a sound yet, but would it compare to a moog grandmother possibly?
@welshsynthesizerlabs6552
@welshsynthesizerlabs6552 5 лет назад
I haven't played the Grandmother, but I have 3 other Moog's here and it sounds totally different. If by "mellow" you kinda mean that sort of 70's, high-resonance, creamy, "lucky man" by ELP sound, then you want to go with a Moog. If, on the other hand, you're talking about a kind of Vangellis, "new agey", CS-80ish kind of mellow then I'd say go with the Deepmind. I guess I'd be more inclined to describe the Moog sound as "mellow" and the Deepmind as "dreamy", but of course mellow and dreamy overlap. Which one I'd go for also depends greatly on what synths you already have. If you don't have many, or any, then definitely go for the Deepmind, as it will be more versatile. If you're already chin-deep in synths, then you may get more out of a Moog, as any Moog will have more punch while the Deepmind can at times be somewhat thin sounding. If you want to put together a hardware setup that gives you the most bang for the buck, I'd go Bass Station II on bass, Deepmind for pads/harmony, any Moog on lead, and after buying those three get a Minibrute to help on leads and also for detail work an octave above the Moog lead. Just my 2 cents.

I love my DM12, but I definitely think that factory patches are mostly horrible. There are just a few nice and usable patches in Bank A. The rest of them, are pure cr*p. But, come on, we can always find a way to make our own patches :)

How would you compare it to the poly 61 you have below it?
@welshsynthesizerlabs6552
@welshsynthesizerlabs6552 5 лет назад
The DeepMind is more versatile and definitely more lush sounding, largely thanks to the effects. The Poly 61 has a brighter sound, likely due to one of its oscillators being a 4-bit counter rather than DCO. The stair-stepped shape of the sawtooth and sharp transition of the square produce lots of higher harmonics. The Poly 61 excels in leads and the DeepMind in strings and pads.

Welsh Synthesizer Labs thanks for the explanation. I own a novation lineup (BS2, Mininova, Circuit and Circuit MonoStation and I am looking for something analogue polyphonic hw to make some nice shimmering pads since the small Novation hardwares are good enough for lead and bass stuff but not so strong for pads.. It seems I should hunt down a DM12 soon. One question, heard in many tests that the keybed sucks. Is it really that bad or it is okay compared to a mid-low pricerange synth. (Just to decide if the rack or the keyboard version should i look for..) ? Nice demo, thanks for the upload.
@welshsynthesizerlabs6552
@welshsynthesizerlabs6552 4 года назад
I feel that the keybed is fine. The System-8 has a crap keybed. Compared to that, the DM12 keybed is five stars. The DM12 keybed is average. Not the best but not bad either.

Do you have a list of those 19 unique patches? If all the other patches in Bank A are located elsewhere, I may want to clear them all out to leave space in Bank A for my own patches.

Thanks, I've been unable to find a list so far. I need to start writing down preset locations when I find obes I like. So far, no decent piano patch.
@derekbaker3279
@derekbaker3279 4 года назад
@@gevansmd1 There are pretty decent piano sounds at 58:14 and at 59:44 , however those aren't good enough, then keep in mind that there are quite a few excellent soundsets for the DeepMind that various sound designers are selling. (*) Have a listen to them all with good headphones or through good studio monitors. You may find a decent piano sound in one of the packages, or a preset that you can tweak to get it in the ballpark. Realistically, analog symths aren't ideal for creating reasonably authentic piano sounds....usually piano samples are the best...but if an analogue synth can get there, it's because the sound designer has used cross-modulation, which is like FM that the Yamaha DX7 uses. Last, the DeepMind has a lot of banks for storing custom presets, so you may find that you want to purchase some of the Soundsets you hear. You would have to overwrite the ones Behringer provides, so back them up first. This video is awesome, because you'll know which of the manufacturer's presets you probably wouldn't use. (*) "GEOsynths" has three different soundsets available, each with around 100 custom sounds. They are very creative & make great use of the mod matrix, effects, and mod wheels. "AnalogueAudio1" has two soundsets that have excellent 'bread & butter' presets that will be useful & inspirational. Some of them are beautiful replications of old 1970s string synths. "Alba Ecstacy", "PBsonic" are two others with good soundsets. There are more soundsets out there, but those four are a great place to start. Hope this helps. ☺

"but if an analogue synth can get there, it's because the sound designer has used cross-modulation, which is like FM that the Yamaha DX7 uses" Absolutely. I stumbled on a fairly realistic piano patch on a Minilogue that honestly took me by surprise. It used cross modulation.

You can use the program browser to find similar presets according to your taste by pressing the the program button and rotary control, you can find this in the manual under paragraph 4.2.2 Using the Program Browser . Maybe this can help, it is a fantastic machine to discover and love it. Once had all the gear from 80's including the juno106 that was the base for this one but so much more

There are a few too many “one-key wonders” in the presets. They sound cool but don’t always have practical utility. The effects engine placed over what is largely a Juno-106 does, at times, “gild the lily”. I love the Deepmind, but a more faithful clone of the 106 would be welcome.

a brilliant demo of what a synth rearly sounds like, demode by playing actual lead and bass solos which for me is the only way you can rearly tell what a synth actarly sounds like . which is not possable by simply playing one note and just twidderling the knobs, and looking at oscilliscope pictures, for me when you do that all synths sound exactly the same

If everyone that loved synths had to know music theory and classical music scales or even jazz chops before taking up this fantastic hobby then the synth industry would be finished and most of those 70s and 80s synth pioneers would have had to endure a 9 to 5 in a dead beat job instead of becoming rich and famous. No doubt Mozart or Beethoven would be looking down at your own wonderful playing and waving their finger in horror.
