WE have invited Ben, and this video was preprepared for him to see the more than 25 years ago happened amazing runs of his! I hope you enjoy it as well!
What are you talking about Johnson was up to his eyes on steroids god almighty a 4 year old child could run extremely fast if they had taken the amount of steroids that Johnson took
SO agree!! What a Legend and runner he was and I loved seeing him beat Carl "Cry a Baby" Lewis, who yes was on Drugs too, those of us with some commonsense know this!
One of the most sublime moments of the sport. I love Ben Johnson. A symbol of clawing, persistence, obsession in training and obstacle course. The rest is bla bla bla bla.
@@achourzidelmal9788 Carl Lewis admitted he’d used illegal performance enhancing substances, even in the 1988, before and after the Olympics. Moreover, admitted to be part of a group of athletes allowed to violate the rules. Ben Johnson was on drugs and had to be disqualified, but out of 8 sprinters, 6 tested positive. Why only Ben Johnson?
Correct 100% . Ben Johnson is still the One to me ! He just been sold by others team ... because he was better ... even with the same "juice" ; others could not reach his level !
Yes I have to agree. I'm about to star reading "The dirtiest race in history" Which is about this race. Linford Christie, like Merlin Ottey seemed to get quicker after what would be considered their prime.
This race brings back a lot of memories. I was a green suitor in the Army at the time when the Seoul Olympics was in Korea. There I was actually in the stadium to witness this final in person. Regardless of the outcome. This was the most anticipated race of the week and everyone was waiting to see it. In all my years of watching track & field. I have never witness a sprinter bust out of the block faster than Ben Johnson did on that day. Carl Lewis ran his best trying to catch Ben but couldn't. And the rumors going around the field was that Carl was talking smack about Ben prior to that race. While Carl won the race because of Ben's disqualification, most athletes at the venue were happy to see Ben dust Carl just to shut him up.
I watched that race live and couldn't believe what I was seeing. You are correct Ben shot out of the blocks like a man possessed and like you I've never seen anything like it. Lewis though he would run him down like he always did with everyone but Johnson not only kept his lead he extended it. Drug enhanced performance but still glad I got to see it.
I was 10 yrs old when Seoul Olympic took place. I used to idolise Ben Johnson and was over the moon to see him win so emphatically. That run, the 100 mts. Oly. final, was both explosive and sublime at the same time. What made it even more special (for me) was Ben totally destroying Carl Lewis. It felt like Ben had extracted a secret sweet revenge on my behalf too (😂) because I was sick of everyone I knew just extolling Car Lewis all the time, even sports journalists & commentators who are supposed to know better were constantly singing paens to Carl Lewis while ignoring Ben Johnson. When the scandal broke out soon after and Ben Johnson was humiliated, stripped off his gold medal... it just broke my heart!
His fist two steps out of the blocks in Rome 1987 are the fastest first strides in the history of sprinting. It looks like he is pushed from behind. It's surreal!
@@jordanguitar1719 Ben Johnson would probably destroy you even today🤣 steroids can't turn a mule into a race horse dummy. You gotta have the natural talent to even be in a position where you would be offered steroids by your team.
Carl lewis once said "you spend 10 metres at top speed. The rest is speeding up and slowing down" . I think someone forgot to tell this to ben johnson because he spent the entire race accelerating. Strongest and best sprinter ever.
@@magopiendibene that doesn't make for an equal equation. If Ben didn't start using until 81 while the other athletes were already using they weren't really better were they. Then In 81 Ben used and completely blew them out of the water how could it be said that they were better? As far as PE use meaning cheating, I suppose over 95% of all professional athletes are cheaters. There's no getting around that. You have to understand why they do that. It is to sell you a product that you can only look up to and not compete with. This is a wealth allocation tactic. They pick only those who they deem worthy to share in receiving said wealth. They can't have people thinking that anyone can achieve such greatness. Those people act as a buffer between the elite and the commoner.
@@magopiendibene I liked Ben's take off. One of the best I've seen. After his ped infusion he gained the finishing ability unseen until Bolt. Bullet Bob is still my favorite sprinter. He was unbelievable
Handsome Jack opposite. Ben had bad endurance and especially earlier on lost alot of races because he couldnt keep up the pace. His start was always great, but it did improve over the years
Never forget Desmond Lyman of BBC UK announcing Ben Johnson had been disqualified for taking drugs at the '88 Olympics...shocked was a under statement! Hell it was still an amazing run just to beat Carl Lewis made my day
The difference in his physique in '88 compared to '86 is huge. I know it was down to steroids, but to me this (the Seoul race) was the most exciting race I'd ever seen till the advent of Usain Bolt.
In 1988 the Olympics were held in Seoul Korea at this time Canada's own Ben Johnson finalist in the 100m race broke the barrier 9.79 (it is still upsetting but none the less) 🚫 in my 🏠. 🇨🇦 United by strength not defeat 🙏
Carl Lewis should not have even be at the Seoul Olympics because he failed three tests during the 1988 US Olympic trials. Ironically, Carl claimed he was just one of "hundreds" of American athletes who were allowed to escape bans. Ben was the best and was made a scapegoat. We know today that almost all of the finalist popped dirty.
I've had the pleasure of meeting Ben Johnson in Canada in 1986 a very nice guy and blew up the 100m back in 1986 onwards. Still the greatest 100m runner ever in my eyes. Today's athletes have super smart scientists who can provide drugs that are not detectable with what WADA, IAAF and whoever use to test today's athletes. The times that are run today, Ben ran 30 years ago. Not got far have they! We all forget the USA run Athletics, Carl Lewis was caught for questionable urine samples, yet was very protected by the USA. I would not be surprised if all athletes in the mens 100m final in Seoul were on drugs, many were and have since been found to have had been!
You met him lucky you! I didn't but saw him working out; what a beast he was. Squatting over 400 lbs! And yes really the race was a level playing field with what was really happening! I liked Ben then & now. What you say is true. Carl Lewis embarrassed himself acting innocent because we learned later how much & how long he was on PEDS & stimulants!
That's why Carl has that weird pertruding jaw. Side effect of HGH. Wasn't detectable until 1992. Coincidently his times went to crap within a yr before. I met Charlie Francis in Aug of 94. Bought a book from the trunk of his car called speed trap. 7-8 people tested positive in that race, pretty sure it wasn't Carl that was clean. I was watching some documentary where they started testing previous samples from past Olympic games. Wasn't pretty, it would sabotage the entire sport if they blew the whistle.
Me neither; I was watching it live, screaming my head off when he won. Fuck knows what my neighbours must've thought at whatever stupid time of the night/morning it was here in the UK.
Ben was a great sprinter, his time at the top heralding a hitherto unseen anticipation in elite sprinting. His performances represented a step change in what people thought was possible, culminating most memorably with his unforgettable 9.79 victory in Seoul. Sure, if we're speaking about strictly clean athletes then the best of all-time would coalesce around Owens, Hayes and Smith. The latter, in my opinion, was very under-rated but very nonetheless very plausible.
Steroids were around since the 50s, Hayes ran 10 flat on cinder equivalent to 9.6 on modern track, backed up by his 8.6 split for the relay twice, thats every bit as fast as Bolt. Not strictly clean! Also anyone who has ever eaten an egg isnt technically clean either, in enough amounts eggs can give as much growth hormone as a steroid cycle, so maybe none of them were ever clean even Calvin Smith. Ironically Carl Lewis had the most plausible clean diet of all of them but still failed for stimulants. Steroids in athletics/olympics were legal and not tested for until 1976!
i love track, especially the 100m. As the years have gone by, it's clear that the top sprinters in that era were all doping. I consider Ben Johnson one of the best 100m sprinters of all time. We have yet to see someone rocket out of the blocks like he did, it's a joy to watch these old races again. I wish the media didn't crucify him like they did he deserved better.
He was super quick. Yes he was caught. And yes he came up pretty fast in those 3 years ... too quick for his own good as it drew attention to his unusual sudden domination. But so many of these athletes take enhancing substances , some of which are illegal and some not at the time. In bens case he was caught red handed. Beast of a runner though and cannot be forgotten
I don't know anything about sprinting but I would say Ben Johnson was the most natural sprinter ever. Maybe not the fastest but I think he had the smoothest form and most powerful start amongst all the modern greats - Carl Lewis, Linford Christie, Donovan Bailey, Justin Gatlin, Usain Bolt. Ben Johnson was a more natural sprinter than all of them.
Looking at this compilation I can honestly say, if Marian Woronin had been running today he could have reached close to 9.80. He was a beast of a sprinter and was always 2 or 3 meters behind the hulking Johnson. With modern day technology and proper power training his 10 second time back then would have certainly been reduced to a 9.80 today.
In 1988, with his 9,79 while the WR was 9,83, Ben Johnson shoud not dope. He was a beast at that time, he didn't need chemical, in my view. The 9,79, the amazing under 9,80 record, wasn't validated after he was tested positive.
Ben if you had gone to America instead of Canada you would have been Olympic champion (no question asked) just look what happened to the drug mule flo jo
Drugs or no drugs the 1988 Olympic 100 meter was the best race in the history. They all take drugs even now but for some reasons some get picked and banned for other reasons than the integrity of the business I mean sport.
If anti-doping regulations had been strictly enforced, Calvin Smith would have left the 1988 Seoul Games as the Olympic 100 meters champion and world-record holder. Calvin Smith finished fourth behind Ben Johnson, Carl Lewis and Linford Christie. Today he is the only man among the first five finishers in Seoul untouched by a drug scandal. Ben Johnson was hustled out of Seoul after testing positive for the steroid stanozolol following his victory in a world-record 9.79 seconds. It was revealed in 2003 that Carl Lewis had failed three drugs tests for stimulants during the 1988 Olympic trials. Under the rules of the time he should have been banned from the Games but the results were covered up by the U.S. Olympic Committee after it accepted his plea that he had innocently taken a herbal supplement. Christie failed a test for the stimulant pseudoephedrine after the final but was cleared on a split decision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) medical commission when he argued that he had taken it inadvertently in ginseng tea. If Carl Lewis had been banned from the Games and Linford Christie disqualified, Smith would have been next in line for the gold medal and his world record would have stood once Johnson's times were scrubbed from the books.
No'one pounced out of the blocks as fast as Ben, RIDICULOUS reaction time,...just check his start on his 9.83 WC run, he was over 1.5 metres of the rest within just 5 metres of the race, he even got unfairly false started on one of his races when infact after it was proven he was bang on the gun, incredible guy to watch regardless of drugs, he looks like a panther waiting to pounce out of the blocks, the 2 best 100m races I've ever seen which includes his 9.79 time, I'd rather watch him than the 6'5" lanky leg Bolt running.
michael siebert many bodybuilders train for hypertrophy alone not performance. Ben got huge by incorporating alot of weightlifying in his training and moving big weights on the compound moves, that naturally spikes muscle growth
Saludos

I did athletics at this time and all the coaching concentrated on imitating Ben's start. We all thought he was amazing but once he was disqualified for steroid use as the biggest name in athletics no one coached Ben's start again.
He left them all standing in that first race and slowed down a long way out. And considering he ran 'only' 10:03, the others must've been in the 10:20s or thereabouts, very slow for a modern 100m.
La verdad q lastima q se haya dopado xq hubiera sido la carrera perfecta,el estilo de de ben Johnson fue una mezcla perfecta de elegancia y pura potencia.
Ben Johnson was the best. No question about it. Was he on steroids? Well, Lewis was too. Many of them were too, back then. When Lewis was caught, US national federation witheld the results of the analyses, didn’t share them with IAAF, so Lewis got away with it: good for him, he was the powerful man from the most powerful federation. Ben Johnson had no such support, so he was trapped and the only one to pay the price for cleaning up everything. Wiping Ben away from the records wiped the façade of athletics too, and gave fake victories to Lewis, the good all-american boy. But in 1986-1988 Ben Johnson was the best sprinter: he beat Lewis, Christie, everybody. That’s it.
So, the Americans want to believe that their boy, Carl, was a clean athlete who did it all on his natural ability? Good for them. All Ben did was work like a machine in the gym until he was faster than everybody else. Steroids simply helped him to train harder. If he had been representing the U.S.A. he would still be considered the fastest man in history...which he is. No offence to Usain Bolt, but Ben Johnson would beat him on today's faster surfaces.
Wait a minute. 🤔 wasn’t he stripped of his metals for being on steroids or some performance enhancing drug. If everyone was on the juice, as was suggested, why was he the only one caught? Conspiracy man 😐😳😯
A five year old little girl or boy could have told you Ben Johnson had been top off with jp4 ,maybe if Ben would ve waited 50 meter before hitting the after burners. No hell no burners firing from the get go straight out the gate blazing Carl Lewis a distance second place 6meters behind what Elton John call him Rocket Man Ben knew they were going to detect some of that fuel he tried to burn it up I guess he didn't know the tank still have some residual vapor.Last but not the least it was said Ben refused his plane ticket back to Canada stating he will fly himself back l guess so since he wants he needing the fuel for nthe relay and the 200 meters.
he ran 9.79 now with todays shoes take off .05 todays track .05 and if he didnt raise his hand before the finish line .05 so with todays conditions he would do 9.64 would be second fastest of all time he would give bolt a run for his money
