June 10, 2004 - An unofficial tally has Shaquille O'Neal shooting 6-of-9 from the floor when being guarded by Ben Wallace as a primary defender in Game 3 of the NBA Finals. Despite O'Neal's efficiency, he finished just 7-of-14 from the floor overall in an 88-68 loss. Elden Campbell and Mehmet Okur both relieved Wallace's defensive duties at times with Campbell experiencing a modicum of success.
Campbell's defensive highlights against O'Neal in Game 2 and 3 can be seen here: • Elden Campbell's Under...
For the series, O'Neal averaged 26.6 points per game on .631 percent shooting in a five-game loss to the Pistons.

Spacing is much improved with the 3 point line being a focus now. It's just harder to play defense because there's more ground to cover! Players can attack closeouts and get to the rim easier etc.

low scoring because of the defense, offensive warding off foul are called, travelling and lifting and step backs are violations that often called so its easier to guard players, there is no defensive 3 secs rule, offensive moving screens are strictly called. 2004 is where they implimented anti- handchecking rules but those that i mentioned above is why offensive players have less mobility and hard for 3 point shooters to have necessary seperation to shoot the ball. its easier to score today even lebron who are the best in this generation only got 1 scoring title.

@chandleryen7315 3 месяца назад
You can tell Larry Brown told the team they had to send the double to Shaq sooner for the adjustment from game 2. The weakside shaded down more before Shaq even touched the ball on many occasions this game. This was also the game Malone only played like 12 total minutes so they were able to demolish the Lakers on the inside. This series probably goes 7 if Malone doesn't get hurt.

The 80's and 90's NBA was slower but it was during that era that more basketball fundamentals has been seen, more emphasis on defense and efficient team time management. Old school basketball is more physique and less finesse. Which means that they are less prone to injury. If you compare it to current NBA, players seems to move faster, quicker and more finesse. These modern type of play is too risky. They move too fast that it could lead to more mistakes, more turnovers and worse, injuries.

Most teams doubled Shaq at the time, often opening up opportunities for the rest of the Lakers’ offense. In the 2004 Finals, Pistons head coach Larry Brown took the somewhat unusual approach of sending single coverage at Shaq, gambling on the notion that allowing O’Neal to score his fair share of buckets would be better than giving his teammates copious amounts of open looks.

The Pistons felt single covering him with multiple defenders was the best option so he would eventually be worn down in the 4th. The reason it was so effective was because Shaq couldn't stretch the defense as he didn't move around much and clogged the middle so it was difficult for everyone else to move around and get involved in the offense.

Biggest reason they lost was because of Kobe, no disrespect but nobody in the history of the game gets a pass like Kobe does for having abysmal shooting nights

I enjoy this brand of basketball. These refs still bullshiting, the shove off by shaq gets him a foul but you can clearly see in the replay Ben is chicken winging shaqs arm and then flops. Shaq had a bunch of and 1s only reason they aren’t calling them is it would have made the game slower then it already was. I respect the old head piston style but they’re lucky the nba wanted some entertainment value cause I see plenty of fouls.

Man I’m so glad the Pistons won that series because that Lakers team was bullshit, fake superteam nonsense. And watching this you realize Shaq was not a skilled basketball player. He was just big and strong. Physically dominant, but keep him 5 feet from the rim and he’s not good at all.
