The Bene Gesserit are not religious (although they mimic a religious organization.) they are focussed on politics. This was mentioned in Dune and it came as a surprise when Paul revealed that knowledge.
@@theinkandthewell Ah yes, good point! I totally forgot about "Metropolis" in 1927! I saw that as a kid. For some reason that giant robot "creature" really freaked me out! 😧 Especially, the way the men were entering it and being worked to death!
At the time of publishing, it was widely believed that Herbert did not write dune on his own. Later books did not live up to the excellence of the first, adding even more to that belief.
@Deborah Schumann I personally very much like Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse. It was very interesting and well done. And it was a decent culmination of the Golden path from the Leto.
OK you also got wrong how the Reverend mothers work “granted” their power. It wasn’t granted they had to face a life and death trial to convert a toxic substance in their bodies and just threw that spice agony become a reverend mother who had access to her entire genetic histories memories. That was how they got a
There is no "the future", only potential possibilities. And didn't the Bene G's begin on Rossak with Norma Cenva (who actually is the most important female character throughout the entire series, as she assists Tio Holzman, helps start the BG's on Rossak, starts the Guild Navs, helps start Venport-the forerunner of Choam. Kills Xerxes, and vanishes into another universe taking Omnius with her. Perhaps, SHE is the most important woman in Dune history , save only maybe for Jessica! 🤔🎙👍🏾
Actually that’s the whole point of the kwisat hadderach. The women have no problem look8ng into the past via genetic memory. But onky the male who is trained in the way, and with a very special genetic lineage, could look into the future. There are a few KH in the dune books
when you said "untucked" rather than untapped potential I started imagining them as an order of drag queens and honestly not mad about it. Though I wouldn't see the need for tucking with those flowing robes
This novel is from the 1960s; it's more concerned with enlightenment, heightened senses. So "witches" (although used as a pejorative in text) is a misnomer.
If you haven't read the expanded universe stories, especially about the Butlerian Jihad and the fight against AI - you really should. It makes everything that happens in the Dune story, more epic.
Bene Gesserit...... Latin ??? I beg to disagree ...beni - djezirat or Banat- ul- djazeerat.... daughters of al djazeerat... with djazeerat arabic name of the Arabic peninsula
The main problem I have with how the Bene Gesserit are portrayed, is that no one in their right mind, would let those creepy witches anywhere near their leadership. If the Bene Gesserit were presented with a more nurturing and supportive persona, they won't be seen as a threat.
I've never thought any of the imaginings of Dune have gotten the Bene Gesserit quite right. I'd guess they weren't 'creepy witches' but many among the ruling houses didn't trust them but like the other existing great schools, they'd proven their skills value. The most skilled were indeed probably elderly and a little like crones I imagine they'd all but become the monopoly on the education of noble females. Many of even the Emperors female household owed allegiance to the sisterhood. I've always imagined them in Nun like black or muted dark tones, practical and dignified but not ostentatious. Calibate not really, but holding sex as a tool but not one they relied upon (such was the mistake of the Honoured Matres).
With you they would be “nurturing” and kind. You would only see this aspect of them, and they would never show their brutal side. They would be what you need to see to get you to do what they want. Much of what we see in the books is an insider view. Most have no idea what powers they have. Only the most powerful and “in the know” realize how scary they are.
Ultimate youtube irony: using AI to (very badly) voice a video about an organization created in the wake of a jihad waged specifically to rid the universe of AI. Anyone else find it hilarious that the AI can't pronounce "Butlerian"?
I feel this video does not make it clear how truth sense works - Bene Gesserit are trained in being able to observe and examine even the most minute details. This means that when concentrating this observation on people, they can learn a lot from just watching others under various situations, and be able to identify signs of lying. This is not an unrealistic thing even IRL, as being able to analyse people's behaviour is a thing that can be done in reality. Dune just takes a real ability to an extreme. The Prana Bindu trainign is why they can control things like body temperature, heart rate, breathing, and even fertility. Through the nerve control they can control their own hormonal outputs, and thus if they can control hormones, they can control fertility and also sex of the resulting babies. The whole of the genetic engineering plan is done - quite frankly - by sending Sisters to fuck men to get pregnant. As long as the resulting child has no major faults (Count Fenring is a minor character who is an example of that - not disposed of, but raised as a useful person in society, as he became a close friend of the Emperor, and his wife was the Sister who seduced Feyd Ruatha to save his genetic material) they will either be a respectably trained young noble, or be trained as a full Sister to further the plan. The Imperial Princesses are an example of the first (the Emperor's wife was instructed to only have females, so the Kwisatz Haderach could take over the imperial throne), or Lady Jessica, who was a Sister born by a Reverent Mother and raised in the Bene Gesserit, to be given as concubine to House Atreides, so she could breed her part in the plan (she was intructed to breed a girl who was intended to be matched with Feyd Ruatha, but Jessica fell in love and defied her orders to have a boy for Leto).
If the original plan was to join an atreides daughter with a harkonnen son, wouldn't that mean that both lines only had half of the needed genetics to make the final Kwisatz Haderach? Or am i missing something?
you did a good video. From the different scenes and going over the testing that the Bene Gesserit do; how come you never said the name of the test that Paul and the other Bene Gesserit go through? The Gom Jabar? And maybe show a bit more and talk about the test? Not all of the Bene Gesserit survive it.
The more I listen the more I'm left wondering..... it seems that every sect, and every family in this story has a mission, but there's no reason why they really do it, there's no fun.... enjoyment, living for some cause isn't really worth living..... give me some hedonistic reason for what I'm doing.....
This is good lore, but the pace and pitch of the “speaker” is such that the listener becomes lulled into a stupor after a couple of minutes. Twice I needed to stop and go back because I was zoning out. But, truly, the lore is multi-layered and boggling!
The only thing I want to see is more of the dune universe like other planets I wanna see what the war and I think that would be more interesting than skipping to the end in dune messiah we can still get that just let the director of dune 1 and 2 create some original story
As far as working in the background. They worked in the background through the entire de pre-spacing, guild history of their order. They never saw it to actually be the leader they sought to be the power behind from.
"They never saw it to actually be the leader they sought to be the power behind from." MY GOD IN HEAVEN. That is the most confusing sentence ever written.
In ancient Egyptian culture The BENU bird/bene Is the heron bird It means the rebirth The jesuit order aka gesserit Bene gesserit Birth of the female order
the Bene Gesserit should look like supermodels and not how these look in the films. They could and would look as the best of there DNA would allow them.
Read the books. There are reasons they look. Some are stunning, most are fairly nondescript. It depends on what role they were bred for. To seduce, leader or other type of worker.
You totally Gor where is it sisterhoid misstep wrong. it isn’t because of Leto that they missed steps and lost their shortening. It is because Jessica gavee birth to a male, Paul, and then this QH was born two generations before he should happen. You got the honored Matre wrong too. They Are a combination of a fish speakers that the Godhead, Leto’s, female army, and the remainder of the Bene geseritt.
The new Dune 2 didn't live up to what everyone expected! AND EMPRESSES NATALIA AKA INDIRA VARMA IS ALSO IN AN AMAZING MOVIE WITH NOOMI RAPACE CALLED "CLOSE" IT'S AMAZING I WISH THERE was A PART 2
The inspiration for a political organisation who uses faith/religion as a way of acquiring temporal power was believed to have been taken from the Society of Jesus aka the Jesuit Order aka The Good Shepherds , Bene Gessrit are the more human version of what at the other extreme become the Axlotl Tanks (means by which the Bene Tleilax reproduce) Gesserit is an inflected form of the latin verb gero. from which we get the english words generate, generation. SO the Order of those who 'carry (bear/gestate) him well The development through the 50's and 60's of Liberation Theology on earth is IMO a thread we see taken up beautifully in the way that the planted myths which the Bene Gessrit Missionara Protectiva had soght to use to control the Fremen become the very way they lose that power.
Using the Bene Gesserit from the new movie is really give a de-service to them, in the miniseries they use the excuse of why Jessica produce a boy instead of a girl as a way to solve the feud between the Artreides and the Harkonnen, instad of the real reason, in the Lynch and the miniseries version, the Bene Gesserit and the Space Guild spend the whole time plotting with each other for different reasons.
She really just wanted to give her husband a son didn't she? They were actually in love (unlike a lot of other pairings made by Bene Gesserit)? It's been a LONG time since I've read the original book, and I didn't even know until fairly recently there were more than one!
@@BaldingClamydia Yeah, she go against the Bene Gesserit wishes, because they wanted to create their own super soldier, ironically, when Jessica finally had a girl, her powers were to much for her to control, and the only reason why Leto didn't marry Jessica was purely political, because it leave open to political marriage, but Herbert had an outdated view of medieval marriage, feudal marriages, a noble could have wife a dozens of concubines or lovers, even sire bastards, love was hardly in the equation, but that is minor considering his outdated Pocahontas love story, I really hated that part of the Sequels, and how Paul treated Irulan like crap, in the miniseries is more developed than that, because we actually see that Irulan is attracted to Paul and was planning something behind her father back, maybe a secret marriage with Paul, and we not known that post marriage with Paul after her father lost his throne in the books.
@Keyser94 I remember not being a big fan of him! Since he's the messiah-figure, he's so smug and sure that he's just not a fun character to read. Complex personalities/ relationships are always more interesting. I'm committed to reading the series now, thanks for all the background 😁
@@eviemanson01 What do you mean? I know the son was important for the Bene Gesserit, but she wasn't supposed to have one, so I thought it was to continue his line? (I'm not being argumentative, just curious)
The Bene Gesserit are in no way truly religious. Their ideology, if anything, is the continuation of their political and genetic agendas. The two greatest forces in the Sisterhood are adherence to the order's ways and pure amoral pragmatism, which commonly clash with each other and often lead to unintended consequences. The last two of Frank Herbert's books, Heretics and Chapterhouse, explore this in detail.
In Dreamer of Dune, Brian Herbert's 2003 biography of his father, the younger Herbert speculates that the name "Gesserit" is supposed to suggest to the reader the word "Jesuit" and thus evoke undertones of a religious order. (source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bene_Gesserit#Breeding_program)
Somebody should start a Bene Gesserit training school for truth detection , seduction , psychic abilities, and on and on. Under the guise of religion . I think if this organization was around today revenue would derive from body guard work , influence would come from marrying into the high families . This idea is untapped we need a well funded Bene Gesserit academy like a metaphysical convent with cherry picked attendees .
Get used to it, there's a lot of randomly misspoken words. Sometimes it's surprising which words they mispronounce, and it's not like many of them have an accent (to indicate English as a 2nd language), but you can usually tell what they mean anyway :D
funnily enough in that the Bene Gesserit were formed curing the Butlerian Jihad to counter the thinking machines, it seems like this was written by an AI. "Explain the Bene Gesserit to me as if I were writing it for a prep school thesis paper"
As soon as I heard the way they pronounce "reticent" I realized the narrator in this video can't read. LOOK UP WORDS YOU'VE NEVER SPOKEN BEFORE. Just the most basic preparation for video scripts.
They are the reason why Leto Atreides survived his trial by forfeiture when he was 16 yrs old. All factions of the Dune universe are intertwined to each other.
“Amazing media, obi wan kenobi” instantly doubts information and opinions in this video. Sorry but obi wan kenobi suffers from all hallmark Disney Star Wars faults
AI to voice a video about a universe where there was a jihad against AI. I couldn't even listen to a full minute. The irony was too much, and the voice too annoyingly "canned."
