I grew up with Benny The Jet Urquidez. I knew his whole family. Six brothers all black belts and and black belt sister who could fight just like Benny.
Benny is a true sportsman, acknowledges a great technique when he's scored on and smiles and nods his head even compliments the fighter in the end.. watch his point tournament matches too, he's a human tornado with undaunted confidence
I have to disagree with this one as far as on a different level compared to the elite mma fighters of today and I was one of them fighting in the PKA as well as the WKA. Of course, Benny and Billy would still be a world champ level today for sure but I am saying in general. Still, even today they still don't understand elite cardio and you see glycogen drained out of the arms and the legs to keep the heart working properly. It really took being an endurance distance racing cyclist (100's of 100+ mile races road and mountain) many years after my fighting days to understand fully what Bruce Lee taught about cardio. I stilled trained fighters for many years so I made them wear heart rate monitors and put them in the ring with me in light contact with no round bells just continuous to see what happened. They really had to feel what I have said above to really understand true cardio. We are talking like 20-30 min. at a time continuously. Then they had to understand that it also takes years to get truly incredible heart cardio to "go the distance." Anyway, you can see the phenomenon of what I am talking about glycogen depletion in arms+legs in fighters of old as well as still fighters of today but in the elite UFC fighters it has gotten better over the last 30+ years.
@@geu6270 benny is a beast though you cant deny that, I think he could hold his own in a ufc environment easily, look at his record it's ridiculous. You are right though todays fighters are not without skill it's just rare to see someone fight at his level you still can see it every now and then in people like anderson silva but even then benny's record man but that may just be because today's fighters in general are more skilled so getting a win loss ratio like that is so much harder to accomplish now. Also I just like his fighting style of fighting on par with someone round after round to all of a sudden become super saiyan and just destroy his opponent.
Great fight, but jackson punches great with both hands,he had too much arsenal for benny, but when it comes to heart you can't separate them.two true warriors am watching this in 2020,although it's in black and white its unmatched.those old warriors have something that cannot be duplicated or imitated.and that atmosphere wow
Billye "Jack" Jackson retired from professional kickboxing with a 22-2 record. But he was also a dominant fighter on the tournament point karate tournaments. Back when I was a teenager in the late 70's - early 80's I had the privilege of seeing him fight a few times. He was such a force o be reckoned with and everything that he threw (kicks and punches) had so much power. He was such a no mercy no non-sense fighter.
I had the privilege of seeing the fight life, Benny lost, end of story.Benny claimed the fight been promoted as an exhibition fight but I don't remember that being said. I am a HUGE fan of Benny, but he lost, it was a brutal fight, Billy was better, stronger and much more aggressive, and hurt Benny a couple of times, not to mention that damaging knock down, which was clean. That flurry that Benny threw at the end was good, but not good enough to get the decision. They should have fought again.
No, it was much more complicated. Read this: books.google.de/books?id=39sDAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA38&lpg=PA38&dq=billye+jackson+fight+record&source=bl&ots=WgP5T3xZlb&sig=ACfU3U0IyUAXAttCd8mp-4A9EBU_EaPq_Q&hl=de&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwilxZahiNfpAhVkQRUIHb-pCoEQ6AEwDXoECAgQAQ#v=onepage&q=billye%20jackson%20fight%20record&f=false
Seems like Billye's gameplan was "sidekick haymaker haymaker haymaker clinch headbutt, rinse repeat." He definitely lost his composure starting in the second round, and from most of his other fights you can tell he is used to using his natural athleticism to bully opponents. That didn't happen here, and 2nd and 3rd rounds it's visible that's he's really swinging for the fences.
Absolutely, Benny lost at 100%, he has won just the first round. In fact there is lot of champs who don't accept lost. An other one is Peter "Sugar foot" Cunningham, this one lost his title at Paris, France against "King" Richard Sylla, 1986, and he has never recognize the decision. The worst of all is that on their story on internet, they rewrote the history other way. What a shame.
@@francois2599 Apparently you have no clue. It's Billye who won two rounds at best and was rescued by the end of the final round. Just look at the final moments and Billyes facial expression. Also, read the background story. The choice of rules was entirely to make it easier for Billye and harder for Benny.
@@nimarezai5052 You don't understand what I say. For me Benny won only one 1 round, that's all. He should just close his mouth because he lost this fight. Jackson was better, largely and it's shame that now on wikipedia you read no-contest for this fight.
I didn't see Benny losing the fight. Jackson was super aggressive and threw a ton of power strikes and kicks, but he missed most of them. Benny wasn't as aggressive and didn't throw as many power shots, but he scored a lot more points.
Really? Benny has some good moments but he was beaten up. Jackson was stronger. Besides dropping Benny arguably twice, he stumbled him several times. It's obvious why a rematch never occurred.
Benny one 2 or 3 rounds at the most and never hurt Jackson. Jackson dropped him clean and hurt Benny several times. What fight were you watching? Watching with White eyes I see.
@@chadtep7571 Benny also actually lost his last fight against Tagami but it was his last fight and the referees don´t want him to lose that fight but Tagami was better. Keep in mind that Benny was 41 years old at the time while Tagami was 25.
Benny is my All Time Hero. No big deal he lost this fight. Legends like Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Mike Tyson hav all lost a few fights. Benny & Billye wd ding dong, hurt each other badly if they fought again. They were on par with each other, each will hav their day if they fought again & again. Just like Ali & Frazier. Brutal.
When it comes to technique, style insight, knowledge, heart, spirit, soul, The Jet is in a class of his own. Its called martial ARTS for a reason, look at Bennys evades, movement and timing, a true artist with heart and soul- Always smiling, humble and respectful. A lot of ufc fighters could have learned a lot from this man and his style. A true legend, right up there with Lee and Ali.
Let's not get ridiculous here...Ali is the GOAT, and Lee is in a class above EVERYONE else in terms of martial arts skills. Benny was good, but so was Billye Jackson. And in this fight, Billye was better.
Great fight!! I don't know how scoring was done back then, but I do know it's weighted heavily towards kicking and Billye didn't want low leg kicks in the fight which was not unusual in American Kickboxing matches, which is disappointing as a whole for American Kickboxing. Regardless, using common MMA scoring now a days it was a close fight. Benny won rds 1-2, 3 was a toss-up, Billye won 4-5, possible 10-8 in Rd 4 (Benny was rocked a couple of times, one being a "knockdown" because hand touched mat, I don't believe his actual butt did as alluded to by other commenters) and Benny won rds 6 and 7 and left Billye dazed. I don't know if this is true, but I read in the comments that Billye was fighting with smaller ounce gloves, if this was the case then the fight should be ruled a no-contest, it changes the whole fight dynamics & damage and should he have never been allowed as a sanctioned fight. I don't know why Benny would have turned down any future fights with Billye he seems game to fight anyone and he had Billye on the ropes in Rd 7 and was primed to be knocked out. With that said, I think the winner of the fight could have gone either way depending on scoring.
I trained with Jackson and I can tell you the claim about the gloves is HORSESHIT. Also as far as the rematch, Demetrius Havanas chased the Urquidez camp until he was tragically killed in summer 1981 and they wanted NO SMOKE!!
Urquidez perdió y supo que era un rival muy duro, por eso nunca quiso volver a pelear con Jackson, el resto de historia de los guantes y todo eso, ya son puras excusas para no dañar su récord.
I believe it! He is an incredible fighter! glad to hear he got a belt. I have to admit I dont know much about him. Most of what I know I got from Steve Armstrong, MMA Referee, Judge, and Promoter. He had this video in his archives. I'm honored to bring it to light.
@@monitor4728 yes he was and remember this was only Mr. Jacksons like 12th fight he went on to have over 30+ can you imagine a rematch Billy said Benny declined
Definitely, there had been alot of irregularities like head boot, late punch throw, unethical throws. And surely Jackson was on fire but kept missing his punches target. Benny won this fight and I wonder if the judges are counting the close body punches of Benny those are huge upper throw. Lastly there are two moment of instance that the ref should have stop to count on Jackson. My humble submission anyway
This was later ruled a no-contest because Billie refused to fight at the last minute unless they agreed to not allow low kicks, Benny’s specialty. The crowd was already there and the promoter was going to get screwed so Benny reluctantly agreed. Benny was dominating him in be final round anyway. Benny was an excellent wrestler and judo practitioner with a great core and low center of gravity. He would have beaten Billie under regular kickboxing rules (and destroyed him in an MMA fight).
Wow... I attended this fight in West Palm Beach in 1980. One of the Jet's only losses ever but he later got the fight overturned due to some irregularities. Benny "The Jet" Urquidez a legend.
lol yeah 6 years later the WKA overturned it but the state of Florida didn't lol also for those reading Bennys brother Arnold was co creator and owner of the WKA
@@omegasquad868 it aint as easy as you misportray it here. These are the facts: books.google.de/books?id=39sDAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA38&lpg=PA38&dq=billye+jackson+fight+record&source=bl&ots=WgP5T3xZlb&sig=ACfU3U0IyUAXAttCd8mp-4A9EBU_EaPq_Q&hl=de&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwilxZahiNfpAhVkQRUIHb-pCoEQ6AEwDXoECAgQAQ#v=onepage&q=billye%20jackson%20fight%20record&f=false This was rather a set-up with one side, Jackson fully prepared to fight Urquidez, who was expecting another fighter. No to mention the change of several rules to Jacksons favor and the issue with the gloves. The bell rescued Jackson. One more round and he were K.O.
Old school kickboxing with a lion heart we rarely come across nowadays, those good old days when we all did traditional karate first then transitionned to full contact... Benny was a legend, as invicible as he was, this time I also give the fight to Billye Jackson,
DynVec I don’t know how it was shot, sorry. This video comes courtesy of Steve Armstrong, MMA referee & promoter largely responsible for bringing MMA to Texas.
if would be good some information about the fight, when, where, it seems late 60s or early 70s to me....well, younger people need information like that, thanks
Awesome referee!!! I love his relaxation and how he clean up the mess when both boxers are interlaced, with some knock on the arm or he removes himself the arm hooked. Also when he's lenning on the ropes. Incredible relaxation.
well a lot of people wanted to see benny fight the thai fighters under true muay thai rules also not the modified kickboxing rules the presented the Thai fighters with right before the fight
I thought Benny won that fight. Also thought Billye was way too willing to clang heads. It almost looked intentional a few too many times. Great fight tho
On starsystemkickboxing.net/Pages/BennyUrquidez.aspx, under the urquidez v jackson fight, it reads that Jackson's management was only going to accept the fight if urquidez was prohibited from using his leg kicks and after the fight it was found that jackson wasnt using the correct gloves as specified by the promoter. No wonder urquidez looked so displeased
In August 1983 issue of Karate Illustrated magazine, Don The Dragon Wilson stated that in order to fight for the WKA in the US, the use of leg kicks could be negotiable between the contestants before signing to fight. The leg kicks were mandatory only if you wanted to fight in the Orient. Therefore, Jackson's camp's decision to fight without the leg kicks was totally acceptable according to the regulations of the WKA of those days.
Your argument doesn't make sense. Besides Urquidez's leg kicks were not that formidable weapons in those days. He was still in the developmental stage of the kicks in 1981.
A long long time ago. When Benny the Jet Urquidez, Joe Lewis, Rick Ruofos, Ron Von Clief, were the faces of American/Western real fighters. Shame on Bill Superfoot Wallace. In the 1990's at age 45 Bill Wallace fought to a draw an aging Joe Lewis. Bill then boasted that back in the days He Was The Best There Is. There were no internet to verify his claim. But people remember. Bill Wallace only win fights because of his fancy high kicks that impressed the judges who never seen such high kicks from American fighters before. But Bill Wallace isn't no good of a fighter, he is just a kicker good for movies.
I looked at both comments and Benny won .it should have a draw Benny started strong and finished strong putting the guy in the corner punching him finishing string
What a fight! I'd give it to Benny by a CLOSE split..amazing how many times they both tagged each other and no cuts..talk about a couple'a leather-faced dudes
I think benny didnt lost the fight, beginning was for benny middle of the fight jackson was dominant but last two rounds i would give to benny again. Draw would be fair
@dano your a dumbass Benny is the GOAT in kickboxing i just dont like ass kissers like yourself and you dont want to hear the truth its just that simple
