Hi. Loving the videos. Doing a van build for my son and I. Need internet of course and looking for advice on best system for our needs. Love the Teltonika RUTX14 but think it’s overkill for us. Primarily best 4g we can get for in the sticks with no 5g of course. On a budget too but will spend additional if worth it. Think dual sim dual modem would be great. Can you suggest a router/ omnidirectional antenna solution for us? Cheers in advance.👍

Given you want dual SIMs then this tends to discount any of the consumer routers. Teletonika are my choice of professional router and they have a wide range of models with Dual Sim, the best performing 4G model is the RUTX14 but as you say it can be overkill or out of the budget for some. Note: only the RUTX12 has a dual modem as well as Dual SIM with all the others switching their single modem to the 2 different SIMS. A more budget friendly but still good performer in the Teltonika range is the RUTX11 Cat 6 Dual SIM Router which you can see here. www.solwise.co.uk/RUTX11 For Antenna I would recommend the Poynting Mimo 3 range - for the RUTX11 the 3-15 would suit the RUTX09 - you can see that here. www.solwise.co.uk/a-mimo-3-v2-15 Don't forget that if you do decide to buy from Solwise you can get 10% off with our code EXPLOREVAN Hope thats useful and happy travels!

Do you know if the Rutx11 has the same specs in terms of connecting to a fluctuating 9-30V power supply? I have a 24v system that pushes upwards of 28.5V at times and it would be a joy to connect this to the Dc supply, rather than running it through the inverter. Also, have you tried running this with the compatible dome-shaped Teltonika omni-directional antenna? Wondering if the flat adhesive mounting works well on the roof, or if I should try to make a modular, telescoping pole connection. I know you mention the Poynting, but I wonder if you tried the corresponding option from teltonika. Thanks so much for your help.

Hi, the RUTX11 has input voltage range of 9 - 50 volts. We have used the Teltonika Combi antenna in the past but as it has to mounted through the roof it’s not ideal for us as we often use the antenna on different vehicles for testing so magnetic / surface mount is better for us.

Hi, great videos. Do you know how to set up a smarty sim with a Teltonika rut240? I have updated the APN but still have no Wi-Fi connection. Do you have a video on Teltonika set up. Thank you!
@ExploreVanUK

Hi, Smarty are the sim cards we use most and we've never had a problem using them with any of the Teltonika routers. Just pop them in and its worked. Personally I would set the APN to Auto just to check. You mention WiFi but I presume you mean the Cellular connection rather than the WiFi - the APN and Sim card aren't needed for WiFi.

Hi im absolutely loving your youtube videos, I’m researching a product to suit my boat, it has mains 240v power in the marina only and 12v when at sea and the marina provides free guest Wi-Fi which is at best poor on our berth I have a Poynting A-XPOL-0001 antenna brand new which I would like to use if possible My need for internet is really just occasionally watching BBC I player, streaming radio, staying in touch with weather forecasts and social media usually only 2 of us at any one time My questions are Which router would best suit me? I understand that when away from the marina guest Wi-Fi the device would require a sim card to access internet, I watch your RU-vid with interest that the Teltonika RUTX14 has dual sims which can be from different providers and that router selects the best network and switches accordingly, I do hope I’m understanding this correctly If the local guest Wi-Fi was available would the router automatically switch and pull in the guest Wi-Fi and if there was no guest Wi-Fi it would switch to using the sim data similar to a mobile phone? Hope this makes sense I’m not very techy but would like to make an informed decision before purchase "Help"

The change from one sim to the other takes between 1-2 minutes with the RUTX14 as it only has one LTE modem, so has to disconnect from one LTE network before establishing the connection with the other one. For near instantaneous change (seconds) you would need the RUTX12 as that has 2 modems so can be simultaneously connected to 2 LTE networks. (you can see the RUTX12 here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t655M9CcYfU.html) You can also see a case study of how the RUTX12 has been used for live streaming here which might be helpful. teltonika-networks.com/industries/use-cases/water-ski-live-streaming-with-bondix-intelligence/

Can it really benefit if you attach 4 external yagi antennas?
@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK Год назад
Hi, a good quality Yagi is likely to be a big improvement in gain, but there are lots of things that can impact performance such as tower load, bands available etc. So worth trying to make sure that the signal is the issue before going down that route. Yagi are also directional so whilst good for a building it would involve having to set them up if you were moving location and wouldn't be very useful on the move. You also prioritise one tower over potentially another so if the tower you have the Yagi pointed at fails it may mean you aren;t able to connect to alternative tower. Hope that helps

I am considering buying this for my mobile service van. I mainly require the use of WiFi, to operate phone, laptop and printer. I have a 5g sim mobile data card from vodaphone. Is this modem sufficient for my day to day operations?
@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK Год назад
Hi whether it would suit you will depend on a number of factors. Take a look at my seminar that I gave on the things to consider here which may help you decide if it is right for you, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kEux1qPUC3M.html It's worth noting that the RUTX14 is 4G+ so you wouldn't get the benefit of the 5G available on your Sim when you are areas its available. If you want a single unit that would provide that I'd suggest the RUTX50.

Using 2 SIM cards, can you use both of them the same time so to double the download speed?
@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK Год назад
Not in the RUTX14 as this only has one modem which switches between the two SIM cards depending on how you have it set (eg if the signal gets weak / speeds get low) However the RUTX12 which I review here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vrIHwMsqi00.html has 2 x Cat 6 modems which can connect simultaneously and aggregate the bandwidth.

i am trying to understand something: Why aren't both SIM lighten up? I tried it each one a side and is working, each one takes it s own operator. But i presumed this is a LOAD BALANCING stuff. Load balancer settings are ON. Just that on one SIM say ONLINE and th eother say Interface Stopped. I try to find info about this, as these should be ONLINE both in the same time..to have the load balancing work. ANy idea?
@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK 11 месяцев назад
Hi - the RUTX14 only has one modem and switches between each sim depending on how you have it set, you can't have both connected at the same time. Load balancing can only be used with a WiFi connection and 1 x Cellular connection as shown in the diagram at 3:07 To be able to connect them both at the same time you need the RUTX12 which has 2 modems. This can load balance between two cellular connections - You can see our review of it here. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t655M9CcYfU.html

Anythoughts on how the Avtex Amr985 compares to this which also takes dual Sims
@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK Год назад
The Avtex AMR985 is a relabelled Teltonika RUT950 (With a bigger price tag as it has motorhome on the label 😉) it is a Cat4 router (speeds up to 150mbps) and only has 2.5Ghz WiFi. where as the much newer RUTX14 is Cat12 modem (speeds up to 600mbps) and has 2.4 and 5Ghz WiFi. It also has GPS for tracking and a faster processor. The RUT950 (we use the RUT955 which is the same but with GPS added you can see it our video here. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nF9ZZPHWdpU.html) is a good unit, but don’t pay the premium to buy it with an Avtex label on it. Great vid. Very informative. So the BIG question - RUTX12, RUTX14 or RUTX50??? :)
@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK Год назад
Thank you! Great Question - with multiple answers....... It very much depends on the depth of your pockets and where you are likely to travel and how much speed you really need. The RUTX50 (which we've not tried yet) could be a great solution if you spend time nearer to cities or towns where a good 5G signal is available. If, like us, you tend to stay away from urban environments it's probably not going to give you much benefit over the others. If speed and coverage is important to you the Dual modems on the X12 being able to connect simultaneously theoretically maximises your chances of getting a good speeds consistently, but only if you have 2 active data plans ideally on 2 different networks. The X14, giving you pretty much the best you can get out of a single data plan with its higher category modem albeit without 5G, would be a good choice if you're not going to have 2 high usage data plans running continuously. Especially as realistically anywhere you can get a 5G signal you are more than likely to get a very good 4G+ signal so its still going to perform very well in urban environments and just as well as the X50 once where 5G isn't available. (Do you really need 100+ MBPS in the few places you will get 5G?)

@@ExploreVanUK Teltonika RUTX12 has two modems, but the router does not support connecting. RUTX12 is good if you expect a reliable internet connection - if sim 1 loses range, the router will immediately switch to sim 2 (if it has range). In other dual sim routers, you have to wait a few seconds for the modem to switch over.
@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK Год назад
We tested the RUTX12 here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t655M9CcYfU.html and, unless the firmware has changed since, you can set it to “load balance” across the 2 cellular modems simultaneously rather than “fail over” as in your example. This allows the bandwidth of both cellular connections to be aggregated in to your network.

@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK 3 месяца назад
Hi, this wouldn't be an unusual situation. Your iPhone 14 has an X65 Snapdragon modem wihich is 5G capable and higher performing than the modem in the RUTX14 which is only 4G and a lower Category.. So where you have a good enough signal to get multiple bands (especially if one of them is 5G) to your phones small internal antennas it would be expected to out perform the RUTX14. However as the iPhone doesn't have external antenna connections, when in a weaker signal area and especially with the phone inside a van the RUTX14 will out perform the iPhone easily. Where you are able to connect to 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz WiFi 5Ghz is almost always going to provide a higher perfromance as it is shorter range but can carry more data than 2.4Ghz For more info on the considerations for performance on cellular internet and the things you can consider changing on the RUTX14 you can check out this seminar I gave at the Adventure Overland show. But there will definitely be qreas where you phone will outperform it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kEux1qPUC3M.html

No problem, just remember that unlike the RUTX12 which has 2 modems so the 2 Sims can both be connected at the same time, theoretically doubling your connection speed - The RUTX14 only has one modem which switches between the 2 SIMs so both cannot be connected at the same time. The benefit being it is easier to change from one network to the another.

I was reading some reviews on the RUTX14 and some have said it was horrendous around mainland Europe which I understand could be down to the sim I guess. I have two needs.... My current 5 yr old HUAWEI mifi box is not great in the vent of my Fiat Ducato self build in a low signal area so I want to improve on that and get a much better signal inside the van when in rural areas in the UK, it's not awful, I can stream Netflix/Prime/BBC most of the time but occasionally have shocking buffering for no reason, box keeps going from green to yellow and there's only one other house in our area. My other need is something that will work in mainland Europe as I travel a lot over there. I would, for example, get a sim in Spain and put it in the router. I'm not liking some reviews at places that sell this router saying how bad it performed abroad. Do you have any experience with this setup when traveling in Spain, France, Germany, Italy for example? I'm guessing I will have to take down some of my wood ceiling to install this unless it goes over the cab where I have just insulation. Could the Poynting Antenna be installed on the slope of the Fiat Ducato above the cab or should it be on a flat level surface? Any advice would be appreciated.
@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK 6 дней назад
We’ve used various Teltonika routers throughout Europe with no issues but not the RUTX14. However since they are made in Lithuania and sold throughout Europe I’d be extremely surprised if there were issues when used there. I’m not totally clear from what you have said what you are looking to do and what exactly you have at the moment. The range of Huawei devices is vast and you don’t mention if you are using an external antenna already. The RUTX14 being Cat 12 has the potential to out perform most 4G routers with the right antenna and in the right areas.

@@ExploreVanUK - Thanks for the response. My set up is a Huawei MiFi Box E5573 (I think), I put it in the vent of my van to get a better signal, I have no external antennas. I'm happy to go with the Poynting Mimo 5 in 1 or 7 in 1 with a RUTX router, I just don't know which one to go with. I have unlimited data for the UK with Vodafone for the MiFi box and would buy local Sims where I can when abroad. The placement of the Poynting Mimo 5 in 1 or 7 in 1 Antenna is what concerns me. I have a Fiat Ducato self build so not many flat areas on the van roof to put the antenna hence why I asked if it would be okay on the front slope of the van near the top as I have the easiest access for drilling due to no wood ceiling above the cab storage area, only insulation is up there so it would be the easiest place to install the antenna on the outside and drilling in from there. I'm looking to improve the setup I already have with something better which would be an outside antenna and inside router that doesn't need to be positioned in my vent because of the faraday cage effect my metal panel van conversion creates. I want increased signal strength and stability. Thanks.
@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK 4 дня назад
Hi thanks for the info that makes it easier. The Poynting Mimo will perform best Omni Directionally on a horizontal plane so I wouldnt suggest mounting it on an angle. However there are loads of mounting options with them so I'd be suprised if you can't find a suitable way to mount it on the roof. We have ours surface mounted with magnets and the cable goes through one of the existing cable entry points in the roof of our Iveco. So we didn't need to drill any new holes. It can also be surfaces mounted with adhesive, pole or rail mounted or of course through the roof if you need to. You could even run the cables in through a door or window if really wanted to avoid holes in the roof. The Choice of Antenna model comes down to your choice of Router and both really come down to your budget. If the Router has 4x4 Mimo LTE antenna connections like the RUTX14 or RUTX50 then it really is necessary to have a 4x4 Mimo antenna like the Mimo 3-17 to get the best out of it. If you go for a lower cost router that only has 2x2 Mimo antenna connections then the Mimo 3-15 would be perfect and if you are not bothered about the WiFi repeater function / GPS then the Mimo 3-12 without the external WiFi and GPS antennas would also be an option, you can just use the supplied on unit WiFi antennas. Hope that helps you choose!

Hi, you could connect a 2x2 Mimo external antenna to 2 of the antenna connections and then the supplied internal antennas to the other 2 connections. The performance would not be as good as a 4X4 Mimo (Or 2 2x2 Mimo) external antenna. I wouldn’t suggest running it without antennas connected.

In a very good signal area it’s comparable, but not much use for work as I need to use phone while also using internet, the lack of configuration on phone hotspot makes it less than ideal for anything more than a casual user. As soon as in to average to weak signal areas the external antennas on the router blow the phone hotspot away.

@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK Год назад
Your phone if pretty modern is likely to be at Cat 12 (same as the RUTX14) whereas the Router may be Cat 6 or even Cat 4 depending on the model, even if it is higher, as the router probably only has 2x2 Mimo connection to the puck antenna, it won't be able to aggregate all the signals that your phone can. So in an area with good signal and carrier aggregation, your phone is likely to outperform it. Lower-end routers with only 2x2 Mimo external antennas will only start to perform better than your phone as the signals strength drops off, as they can maintain a better connection than your phone could. You may find the router actually performs better in a reasonable signal area, without the external antenna connected and if put outside as it may have more internal antennas.
