*unpopular opinion:* Princess Diaries 2 was always my childhood favorite one! i just thought it was so fun, the parade with the children (the Kelly Clarkson anthem) & the princesses slumber party (+Karaoke time with the Queen and Raven-Symone!!!) were such iconic moments!! Also, the first enemies to lovers we shall never forget! 😂

- The screenplay for the film was written by Shonda Rimes before her success with Grey's Anatomy and her other TV shows. - This was filmed before Chris Pine was even being considered for James T. Kirk in Star Trek. At the time, Pine was just an up and coming young leading man type who was making his theatrical film debut. - The joke with Lily coming out of Mia's closet was rather apropos...in real life, Heather Matarazzo who plays Lily came out as lesbian shortly before the film was made. - There are real life brother and sister playing roles in the film...Prince Jacques was played by Spencer Brelin and the orphan girl Carolina that Mia makes a princess for a day at the parade is Abigail Breslin. - The one scene that gets me every time I see this is the song "Your Crowning Glory" during Mia's party. Julie Andrews had undergone surgery to have growth removed from her vocal chords, and unfortunately, the surgery was not as successful as she hoped. In fact, she was told that she would never sing again. Which is why in the song, Julie does sing-speak of the lyrics because her famous soprano singing voice was silenced. When the song was being filmed, everyone had a hard time keeping their eyes dry. What everyone thought would never happen, happened...Julie sang again. - The Member of Parliament, who is short, stuck between the twin brothers arguing over the Summer Palace is played by Paul Williams, and his charcter's name is Lord Harmony. Paul is an actor, but he's better known as a singer and songwriter. He wrote such songs as "The Rainbow Connection", "Rainy Days and Mondays" for The Carpenters, and won the Academy Award for Best Song for "Evergreen", which he shared with Barbra Streisand from the 1976 version of A Star Is Born. As an actor he's best known for playing Little Enos Burdette in the Smokey and the Bandit films. - The choral director during the wedding scene is Kate MacCauley Hathaway, Anne's mother. - Yeah...Lord Mabrey is John Rhys Davies aka Gimli, son of Gloin in Lord of the Rings!!!

This is the movie that made me fall in love with Chris Pine! He was literally unkown at this point, this was his first movie role. Also yes, that IS Gimli and that WAS Stan Lee! During the song Julie Andrews sings at the slumber party, it was the first time she sang in public since she had throat surgery in 1997. She nailed the song on the first take, and brought tears to the eyes of everyone present. Also, Hannah Schneider, who played the girl dancing with her and Raven-Symoné (from Disney's That's So Raven) is Julie Andrews's granddaughter. Julie Andrews performed her own stunt in the mattress-surfing scene. Along with Kathleen Marshall, director Garry Marshall's daughter, who appears again as Charlotte, Garry's entire family has a small role in the film. He has a cameo himself at the end playing the bass drum on the left. Anne Hathaway's mother also appears as the choir director. Abigail Breslin who plays Carolina the orphan girl was in Little Miss Sunshine. Her brother Spencer Breslin also had a minor role as Prince Jacques, the kid who dances with Mia at her birthday party. Sophia Loren is in the birthday party scene, behind Raven-Symoné when she first appears wearing glasses and a gold dress. Heather Matarazzo (Lilly) came out as gay between the two Princess Diaries movies. She literally came out of the closet in her first appearance in this movie. In the beginning of the movie when Mia accidentally flings her bracelet and it is caught by a palace guard, he says "It happens all the time" just like in the first movie when Mia broke a glass at her first formal dinner. This is also the same line, spoken by the same actor, to Julia Roberts' character in Pretty Woman. The song you recognised at the parade is Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson, the movie's theme song. Man re-watching this movie just reminds me just how much fun it is. It is so criminally underrated in the critic reviews. I love how it's almost like a modern day version of Queen Elizabeth 1 AKA the Virgin Queen where Mia declares going against tradition and becoming Queen without a husband much like Elizabeth did except I guess it is implied Mia eventually marries Nicholas which I never fully understand the full context, would Mia marrying Nicholas mean his uncle got what he wanted? I hope in a way his uncle still loses. Anyway there are so many things I love about this movie. Joe and Clarisse's relationship, Lily being back, the physical comedy, the comedy in general, like I said the sort of modern day esque of Queen Elizabeth 1, Raven-Symone is in this, of course Julie Andrews singing after being believed to never being able to sing again and one other thing I always really appreciated was that they didn't go the route where Andrew turned out to be a bad guy. I liked that he was always a genuine person. Just not someone Mia truly loved. I loved that the breakup was 100% mutual and that he ended with Nicholas' ex or rather the girl he was seeing to make Mia jealous.

When you said that Chris Pine is the quintessential Prince Charming, it made me think that you need to watch "Into The Woods". Pine plays the prince who is searching for Cinderella (Anna Kendrick) in that film.

This movie was so cute and a worthy sequel to the original! If you want to see a very funny movie centered around a coming wedding, then please add 1997's "In & Out" to your list. A stellar cast and funny from start to finish! Starring Kevin Kline, Joan Cusack, Tom Selleck, Debbie Reynolds, Wilfred Brimley, Bob Newhart and Matt Dillon as the main characters. You are correct, John Rhys-Davies was indeed the evil uncle.

He passed away last November, and was the sole reason I got into acting. I have a voice acting background and there are some preconceived notions that it's not as demanding as regular acting; but the vocal training itself and perfecting the craft may take more time than any acting school. l feel like he's underrated as Batman (ditto Mark Hamill as Joker) and even non existent in the conversation. I could see Joe telling him to intervene or something similar because he didn't totally trust Pine's character. He does later, but I could see Joe ensuring that Mia is watched over and protected. "Mo" from Succession, lol. I just binged all 4 seasons in August. Great show! I took horseback riding lessons as a kid and the first time my instructor let me walk the horse while she talked to my mom at the end of the lesson and the horse just stopped for some reason. I was only 9 and just kicked but it wouldn't go. I turned around and realized it was going to the bathroom! When it was finished, it took all those kicks I gave it and took off a Ross the pasture with me clinging on for dear life! At least I didn't fall off. My instructor and my mom were relieved and proud!

It’s funny how you mentioned Indiana Jones, because he plays Indiana Jones‘s best friend, Sallah, also! #GimliForTheWin I don’t know if this is mentioned anywhere in the comments, but during the karaoke scene when Julie Andrews was singing… This was the first time she sang after having to have nodules on her voicebox removed. Prior to that, she had a five octave range and was considered one of the best singers on the planet. Once she had the surgery she almost completely lost her singing voice and was limited to just a few notes. Pretty much her full range was on display in that scene as she was, as Julie puts it, “talk singing.“ But it meant so much for the cast and crew at that time to hear her sing that even the Teamsters were in tears on the set. No joke! They talk about it in the DVD commentary. It was a really, REALLY big deal. I’m glad you liked it. I think the first one is better too, but I really enjoy this one, also. What other movie can you name that has Mary Poppins, Cat Woman, Captain Kirk, and Gimli all sharing a castle together? 😁💙💙💙

I've done many years of horse riding. The most dangerous situation I've been in wasn't a horse trying to throw me (although that happened many times; some successful, some not). It was a horse that I had never ridden before running away with me. The horse was already rushing most of the ride and I wasn't feeling comfortable, but the guide said we were fine so I let it go. We get to a spot where we get to canter, I take the lead, and the horse just decides not to listen when I'm pulling on the reins, sitting deep or even trying to turn at the end. He decided he was going home, and come hell or high water, that was happening. I couldn't even safely ditch. I lost both my stirrups, and only stayed on by grabbing a chunk of mane and holding on for dear life. Eventually the horse had to stop as the trail started going downward. I bailed as soon as it was safe, sat down and waited for the guide and the rest of the ride to catch up, and insisted on swapping horses for the rest of the way back. Lesson learned: if something is making you uncomfortable, treat it as a problem rather than an overreaction.

I never even thought that he was Gimli! When you said that I wasn't quite sure who Gimli was because I was trying to put a character to his face. The facial hair on Gimli disguises him really well.

I agree with you about Mia's first kiss. In the first movie, Mia confides to her Mom that when she gets her first kiss, she hopes that her foot pops. Mia has been kissed three times, by the second film's scene where Nicholas kisses her the first time, and they fall into the fountain. The first time, when she kissed Josh, her foot got caught in a volleyball net, and Mia didn't get her first kiss. In the second kiss, when she kisses Michael, her foot DOES pop, but it gets caught on the switch to turn the garden lights/fountains on. So, while she had a kiss, her foot still got caught, and as we learn from Mia’s diary, her romance with Michael didn't last, and they are simply good friends now. When Mia kisses her third love, Andrew, to prove to him that it was Andrew, and not Nicholas, who held Mia's heart, both Andrew and Mia admit that there is no spark of love between them. I don't think Josh, or Michael, or even Andrew, were Princess Mia's real "first kiss." Princess Mia experiences her true first kiss, when she meets her future Prince Charming, Lord Nicholas Devereaux. When Nicholas kisses Mia in the garden, her foot pops. When he kisses Mia again, after he proposes to her in the throne room, and wins the princess’s heart, Mia’s foot pops again, and this time, it doesn’t get caught on anything. I think the love that is born between Princess Mia and Lord Nicholas is her first true love…because it is the only kiss that is unhindered by anything.

A bit of fun movie trivia. Garry Marshall, a prolific American Filmmaker, Producer, Actor, etc. directed Princess Diaries (2001), Princess Diary’s 2 (2004), Runaway Bride (1999), and Pretty Woman (1990). In most of these films he has a small cameo (like how Hitchcock is in each of his films). In addition, there are MANY inside jokes and winks between all of these films originating from Pretty Woman’s success. Since a Pretty Woman sequel was never possible, Marshall “recreated” elements of the movie both with Runaway Bride (uniting the main cast with a different story line - basically making Runaway Bride for fans who loved Richard Gere and Julia Roberts together in Pretty Woman), and copying inside jokes and elements from Pretty Woman directly for both Princess Diaries movies. I prefer the first movie, because it's based on the books, which I read as a teen and loved (but they did some huge changes that I don't like though), and the second one is not based on the book series at all, it's completely unrelated. In the books, Chris Pine would probably play Michael, because that's how he is supposed to be, Mia is desperately in love with him throughout the whole series and she is writing in her diary all.the.time. Like nonstop. Hence the title. The biggest changes in the books are that: - the queen is a terrible old woman who drinks all the time and is not friendly, - Mia's dad is alive and present in her life, but he can't have more kids because of chemo and that's why he tells Mia the truth, - Michael is handsome, extremely intelligent, nerdy, funny and quite popular, - and Joe aka Lars is huge, younger and not very smart, a physical type. I suggest another of the 90's classics '13 Going on 30' with Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo. Love your reactions!
