Best Exercise For L3-L4 Disc Bulge, L3-L4 Disc Herniation

1. Standing Lumbar Extensions
Standing lumbar extensions are an excellent may help to mobilize the lumbar spine and relieve pressure on the disc bulge. To perform this exercise for L3-L4 disc bulge, stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and place your thumbs at the L3 spinal area, which is about 2 inches below the leve of your bottom last rib. Next, lean back as far as you can slowly with your thumbs acting as a fulrum bending point. Hold this position for 1 to 2 seconds and then return to your starting position. Repeat this exercise 10 times, ensuring that you are not straining your back or aggravating your pain pain or thigh/leg pain while doing so
2. Standing Lateral Bending
Standing lateral bending is another exercise that may help to mobilize the lumbar spine and relieve pressure on the disc bulge. To perform this exercise, stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and place your thumbs at the L3 spinal area, which is about 2 inches below the leve of your bottom last rib. Bend your torso to the right side and then to the left using your thumbs at L3 as a fulcrum bending point. Hold this position for 1 to 2 seconds and then return to your starting position. Repeat this exercise 10 times, ensuring that you are not straining your back or aggravating your pain pain or thigh/leg pain while doing so
3. Cat-Camel Mobilization
Cat-camel mobilization is an exercise that helps relieve lower back pain and stiffness and helps improve lumbopelvic coordination. To perform this exercise, kneel on your hands and knees with your hands beneath your shoulders and your knees under your hips. Begin by arching your back upwards and holding this position for a few seconds. Then, slowly drop your back down, lifting your head and looking upwards. Hold this position for a few seconds before repeating the exercise 10 times
Local back pain at L3 and numbness and tingling at the upper front thigh and groin area are the most common symptoms of L3-L4 disc bulge. You may also experience weakness in your leg muscles, difficulty walking, or difficulty maintaining your balance

I had a spinal fusion from L4 to S1, 7yrs ago. Very successful up to now. Resolved my pain. Last few weeks, symptoms have returned. Not severe, but certainly worrying. Slight sciatica in right leg (which is what I had before) and also this time, numbness/tingling in my left outer thigh. Would this be symptomatic of asd in L3-L4?

Thanks a lot,will wait for the MRI result,and follow ur 4 excersize,with health provider on L3 ,L4,to hopefully reduce the burning pain on the top of the thigh(L3 sensory nerve).

In addition to an L 3 disc bulge, I also have L 5-S 1 spondolythesis. Are any of the exercises contraindicated for that condition?

Thanks for showing these exercises!! I have been suffering for 4 and a half years I have L4 L5 slipped disc. I was told be a Surgeon that I need a bit of my disc cut off and a bit of my siatic nerve cut back. He said I would feel it Immediately in my right Leg but I would still have pain in my back. I honestly don't know how I have made it this far! So now I am trying your exercises. Any Advice would be Greatly Appreciated!! Thank you from Australia

I have L3, L4 weakness my mri came out clean. I have have tarlov cyst disease. Could have arachnoiditis. Arachnoiditis symptoms, more sciatica, or neuropathy.

I had MRI showing several bulging discs. It shows L3 L4 bulging impinging on nerve root causing a lot of pain in back/buttocks and running down inside of thigh. I'm scheduled for an injection in couple of weeks. My question is have excercises allowed a person to avoid surgery in past cases you have seen?

I thought any pose that cases you to round out the back (bending the spine forwards), like child’s pose or cat-camel, could make a disc bulge or herniation worse? Doesn’t this kind of movement increase the tendency of a disc to bulge out towards the back, like when bending over to lift something?

Urgent! Dear Dr Walter, In 2018, my mother, 63 years old now, had a bulging disc surgery for lumbar disk replacement: "The operation was performed in April,2018. L3-L4 and L4-L5 recalibration, completed by stabilization of L3-L4 spondylolisthesis (interbody arthrodesis with posterior osteosynthesis)." according to the surgeon doctor. Yesterday, she performed a CT scan and here is what it says: Results : • Significant bone demineralization. • Plate screwed in place. • Significant L3/L4 disc narrowing. • Body and posterior zygapophyseal osteoarthritis. • Global degenerative disc protrusion L3/L4 and L4/L5. Conclusion : • CT aspect in favor: Degenerative bodily and posterior zygapophyseal changes on an osteoporotic background. A global L3/L4 and L4/L5 disc protrusion, with plates screwed in place. What do you think, Dr Walter? What is the best exercise for her? other tips would be appreciated! Note that my mother is having a hard time these days especially pain sometimes acute pain in lower back down her right leg because she is going through withdrawal symptoms of stopping tramadol for two weeks now. I bought her some supplements like vitamin D3 and C, Omega 3, B complex, Magnesium glycinate, Selenium, Propolis and Royal Jelly. Many thanks, Dr Walter! Subscribed!
