It's nice to know that Godzilla Minus One and Oppenheimer are his top 2 movies for the year. It's also coincidental that they're both about the ramifications of WWII without showing the actual war.
Semms that Critikal forgot that Across the Spider-Verse came out in 2023. Also there this movie titled Society Of The Snow that is far better than the Godzilla movie and Oppenheimer. Yorgos Lanthimos also made a masterpiece with Poor Things. For someone that complains so much about Hollywood, Charlie doesn't watch enough foreign movies.
I think I love what 2023 means for movies. It feels like corporate Hollywood has largely failed, while original stories and scripts, executed by talented filmmakers have thrived. This should mean good things going forward.
IMO the #1 reason why Minus One looked amazing with a low budget was its cinematography. It's hard to describe but felt like the team were confident in their shot compositions and how to best represent either quiet, sad moments vs tense action scenes. Script writers and actors also did a fantastic job.
It helps the director is also a visual effects artist to help coordinate the effects and know exactly what he wanted things to look like. Thank goodness he happens to be a great storyteller as well, because we’ve seen plenty of VFX artists who become sucky directors.
The fact that a Godzilla movie is not only considered a great movie and not a punching fest, but the best movie of 2023 just gives my Godzilla loving soul pure peace and happiness.
Not me spotting a fellow G fan Here here brother, I've recently watched high quality writing in Invincible and Attack on Titan, so I was pleasantly surprised to see our big lizard be this phenomenal in the writing! Better than any MV movie, better than Shin, and dare I say better than the OG '54 too Absolute Perfection!
@@juniorsigala5028 Yeah the original is the best but not a lot of people who've seen Minus One have watched or decided to watch the original to compare so most people say Minus One is the best godzilla movie without seeing the original ones.
Not lying, the first time I ever shed a tear in a movie theater was during Godzilla Minus One. You could hear other people sniffling too. I find it hard to imagine anyone would regret seeing this in theaters.
@@mr.cheesytoad5845 well, the game is for kiddos so he should like that, but he doesnt If not for kiddos, its for manchilds, weebs and virgins, all the same really. Going trend for any Nintendo game target audience since the 80's
Godzilla Minus One is the one movie which I can say was significantly enhanced by watching it in a theater with a good sound system. With that in mind, that experience watching it in theaters pretty easily tops any other movie watching experience I've had.
Glad to see Godzilla Minus One getting more hype in the West (on a fraction of a Hollywood production's budget), despite Universal's inferior cinematic universe. It's SO good, man! Can't recommend it enough.
Agree on Zelda. If Nintendo solely focused on software and weren't so insistent on constantly constraining themselves with underpowered hardware, can you imagine what they could achieve?
@@mhshjwnxgsjsbsgksnhssI mean you can get the gaming running in 4k 60fps with full shaders now on PC and it looks and plays absurdly well. Even at launch the game has always ran better on PC.
I'm very surprised they didn't pull a Sega and just move out of the console war in order to churn out some games that are fun to play. Imagine cross platform Super Smash, Mario Maker 3, and what kind of intense new features could be added to single player Nintendo titles with actual up to generation hardware.
Charlie wasn't alone in making Godzilla -1 his movie of the year. I've seen so many films of the year lists with -1 at the top. I think 2023 will go down as the biggest dissapointment in recent film history, but right at the end of the year just when you though it was all over, -1 turned up to save things. I felt myself welling up with tears at the end of it, the story and acting were so good, you really cared for these people. And the special effects for the money they spent were incredible, especially when Godzilla fires off his heat ray, it was like watching the death star warming up and firing in Star Wars. Easily the best most satisfying movie of the year. Thank you Japan for saving the year.
Well... Shin Godzilla is a masterpiece and even better than Minus One (imo) and the first Godzilla is a classic too. It's a consistently good franchise imo
@@kuribo04Shin’s message is harder to get across in the West as it’s politically targeted at the issues with the Japanese gov, and many feel the characters were better in Minus One, the first is still an absolute gem of a film though
I cried after every single death, and that boat scene of all of them together followed by the scene with Kevin crying about how he use to be a brother. Holy shit
I am so glad you went with Godzilla Minus One, by far my film of the year. Also small detail but I really loved how they just reused the original 1954 Godzilla roar and simply added more base to it, goes to show how well that still holds up, Shin Godzilla I liked but there were times where the reused roar sounds that had very little alteration clashed a bit for me.
Only reason why I accepted the roar from Shin was because I was taking into consideration that this iteration of Godzilla in particular is heavily radiated and emphasizes on “growth”. By doing that, it helped me with accepting Shin Godzilla’s roar. Shin Godzilla is my favorite Godzilla movie of all time, Minus One is right behind it
As somebody who works in Hollywood and has witnessed rich and lean operating conditions, your point about Godzilla is very accurate. Some sets are run and gun every second until they finish, and others you waste 3+ days filming a 10 second scene of a crowd running from birds that was fine on the first take because the director is just wasting time on purpose to procrastinate. It’s very real, but I tend to make more money when they waste time so it is what it is lol.
@@bigjalapeno7061 The most recent set I was on, the director does not direct often and this was a reunion of sorts between him and the big actor. Between the script getting re-written probably 50 times during filming, and the director having such a good time vibing on set, they legitimately would go on for hours and hours because essentially the director was having a good time with his boys and wanted to keep the good times rolling. He's the boss, and we just do as he says. Overtime is nice, but working 12-18 hour days every day for two weeks so the director can vibe it out with his boys on the Universal backlot at 3:30am every day is pretty rough.
@@bigjalapeno7061 it's pretty normal tbh. A big part of the reason Hollywood burns money is because they essentially have to pay people enough money to put up with the everyday BS. I have been on a job where I made almost $1,000 a night for around a month, and I am a peon, and one of probably 200+ regular background actors who were making that wage. Then you factor in the camera operators, the lighting specialists, stunts, assistant directors, lead actors, makeup, craft services (food people), etc. etc. and it becomes a pricey endeavor, especially when it is being bankrolled by a company like amazon film studios and they have money to burn. That is just the front end too, lest we forget about the editors and special effects. etc.
My personal GOTY for 2023 is Pikmin 4. Such a satisfying, addicting, beautiful experience! I got so hooked I played the whole series afterwards, worth it!
@@Bird_man180dynamic narrative w/ routes correlated to factions in game is such a welcome one for a gameplay oriented game. And the gameplay variety and replayability w/ the given freedom to create your own AC and the NG+
TOTK is a great example of what a sequel should be, improve. The mix genre provided by the sandbox element as a leverage towards your adventure is so well executed. I find it funny when studios call BG3 as an "anomaly" when they simply just had decent writers for dynamic narrative, player agency, and reactivity, needed to create an illusion of players freedom w/ predetermined level design, tools, and emotional capacity. shows how lazy these studios are.
I am so glad Godzilla Minus One has gotten the recognition and praise it deserves. I recently uploaded a tier list video on this channel and placed it at a big fat S tier. Glad to see the most accurate movie reviewer in history enjoys this movie
i spent a good half of minus one with tears going down my face. the film is such a gorgeous and poignant metaphor for the overcoming of CPTSD, and it didn't even need Godzilla to do it. It could have been ANY monster, and this still would have been my favorite movie of the year. the monster being godzilla was simply the icing on the cake for me, and nothing made me more giddy than hearing the classic ifukube theme take a loud and triumphant turn as the wada tsumi ships took off to take down godzilla once and for all. this movie made me feel emotions that i could never have anticipated and anyone out there who has not seen it should see it as soon as possible wherever it is showing near you.
Tears of the Kingdom is definitely my favorite game of 2023 and of all time. I absolutely loved Breath of the Wild, which is my second favorite game, and TOTK is even bigger and better.
Godzilla Minus One wasn't even made with $15M, the director was asked if they had $15M budget and he said "I wish, man." The estimated budget is closer to $13M and even that could still be off.
Respectable, I just finished Baldur's Gate 3, and I genuinely think that it could be a contender for one of the greatest games of all time. I'm not gonna write an essay here, but I'll say without spoiling, it has one of the best written twists I can think of. It has layers, makes sense, and recontextualized so much about the game. Really can't recommend it enough, if it is a type of game that you're into.
Definitely agree with you. Godzilla minus one was an absolute masterpiece in cinema beyond just any monster movie, it was one of the most emotionally impactful films I've seen. Tears of the Kingdom was also a joy to play, showing just how much can be achieved even within the limits of the Nintendo Switch platform.
My picks exactly. Killers of the Flower Moon is up there, but it’s so damn depressing, that I doubt I’ll ever see it again. Godzilla on the other hand, I’ve already watched three times. And a big hell yes to TOTK
I’m 2 hours into Alan Wake 2 and so far it is the most mindbending experience in terms of how a gameplay interacts with narrative. Anyone who played knows the second you take control of Alan Wake the whole game drops a tab of acid on you
Fun fact: The visual effects artists actually pointed out that they couldn’t get the effects done in time. But instead of making them work overtime or crunching them, director Takeshi Yamazaki just bought and brand new computer and finished all of the remaining VFX himself at home.
As someone who never played a final fantasy game b4 this year, my favorite gaming experience was FF16. It was visually incredible and the powers and customization was cool
Godzilla Minus One was easily my favourite film of 2023, and Tears of the Kingdom was solidly my favourite game - I'm honestly shocked that Charlie has the same picks as me, but it's a very welcome and validating surprise! Absolute masterpieces, they'll be occupying a large part of my mind for many, many years. Suzume was a close second in terms of movies (UK release, I know it's technically a 2022 film in Japan), and Pikmin 4 was hot on the heels of TotK for the title of best game. Great year all round, not sure how on Earth 2024 could match it for me.
@@Meagreee Mainly because based on Charlie's tastes and the general concensus I've seen from other content creators/critics, I thought these would just fall short below something else. Baldur's Gate has overtaken a lot of the conversation in gaming this year, and Oppenheimer was a lot more widely watched and lauded than Minus One. While my picks this year aren't by any means niche, it was such a good year for so many mediums that the chances of someone whose opinions you respect lining up bang on with your own is drastically reduced. Out of the many other videos like this I've watched in the past week, Charlie is somehow the first person who made the same combination choice as myself, and I just think that's kinda neat. I can think of about a dozen games and films off the top of my head that quite easily could have taken the place of either of these picks in most people's lists, it's tough to choose for most. With the amount of people recently who snub anything Nintendo just because they don't like certain business decisions made by their regional subdivisions, or who don't feel like a movie steeped in a cult genre like Godzilla can ever match up to "true" art, conversations like the ones being had here are refreshing (even if they really shouldn't feel that way given their largely glowing initial critical praise).
Honestly, godzilla minus one is one of my favorite movies of all time! It truly blew away my expectations, and I've never been so engaged in a film in recent years. Like I was on the edge of my seat throughout the whole thing. What a grand experience it was to see this film in theaters!
Ive started BG3 with my wife. One of the few games we are flat out loving playing together on console. Rewarding combat but also punishing mistakes. *Miss* *Miss* Grease trapped. Its fun experiencing this whole game with your partner.
Almost the thing I liked the most about Godzilla Minus One is they releasied you have to actaully care about the people in it to make the Godzilla scenes have an actual impact. In the Legendary Pictures one people seem to exist to drop exposition and then they move onto the monster video game cutscene.
i’ve been a Godzilla fan my whole life and i saw the movie a couple days before it came out in the early access fan event and i was upset the media had no clue about it. Since the movie did so well the media started to pick back on it and i’m so happy for it, i agree with your take.
Seeing Charlie praise his favorite movie of the year for a little under 5 minutes made my day, and I will be checking this movie out! As for the games, we truly had a great year for them!
I have to agree on Godzilla minus one. I’m kinda young so it’s my first Godzilla movie, but now I’m completely invested in watching some more. I was constantly entertained and kept on the edge of my seat, despite Godzilla not showing up every 10 seconds. The characters had proper development and depth that I can appreciate
"Killers of the flower moon" with DiCaprio was up there for me. if you liked Oppenheimer there pretty similar. The history and, the evil behind the facade of a person's "good" impressions
I feel like so many people didn't like Oppenheimer, because their attention span has been killed off, I personally think it was one of the most well made movies of the last decade (AT LEAST)
Considering how fast-paced and precisely edited Oppenheimer is, you saying that people were still put off by it due to their fucked up attention span really makes me worried for the future . . . The movie jumps from one story beat to the next without wasting any time, what more do people want? And the answer is clearly not less dialogue cause your average audience can't decipher visual storytelling nowadays without dialogue cues and explanations, which Oppenheimer does well. I thought there was too much talking, but, you can say that about most movies and shows today.
@@radusocol2613 honestly thats exactly what I was thinking, but I feel like people just need something constantly going on, some action or something to not get bored, and as you said its a movie with a lot of talking, and it IS a 3 hour movie, but in my opinion even the talking was well done.
My movie of the year is "Beau is Afraid". My game of the year is Armored Core: 6. Both are heavily slept on in my opinion but i see why people wouldnt like Beau is Afraid. Its kinda like my whole life was a build up to me watching that film but if you think about it every experience in life is a build up to the present moment so it isnt that serious 😉
Beau is Afraid was a wild ride. I need to rewatch it. I can still remember the pure chaos and uncomfortable/anxious feeling the beginning gave me. Really well done. And THE ENDING??? Good god. I just sat there in silence for several minutes.
I really loved Godzilla (2014) and i honestly haven’t even gotten wind of this new one but now i deffinitely have to watch it. I love those movies and Japan in general so thank you Charlie
Hearing Charlie talk about tears of the kingdom being game of the year just brought a smile to my face. I’ve never felt so much joy and happiness playing a game in my life, and I don’t think I ever will. I even decided to finally beat Ganondorf on Sunday, as the last thing I do in 2023. (Also so close to that 100%, my map says I’m at 99.31, wish me luck 😂)
@@HaliaxOfTheChandrian yeah he said Overall BG3 is the GOTY he agrees with it but he likes TOTK more & it's HIS GOTY do u understand what I am saying mate
Didn't like the part where he called the switch "embarrassing" 1. The Wii U exists 2. All of his other favorite platforms are just as/more weaker than the Switch (I'm not fanboying, I 100% agree that it's super weak compared to the other consoles)
FUCK YES. Godzilla is so fucking good I had never seen a single godzilla movie in my life but came out of there impacted so emotionally and it just was so DEVASTATING.
The most impactful scene for me in the Godzilla movie, was when the MC is on it's knee's just screaming after Godzilla blew everything up. You could truly feel the despair going on in that moment
My personal favorite movie from 23, was killers of the flower moon. Spectacular and unfortunately not a lot of people saw it, not compared to other things. But I strongly encourage you to watch it as well
As a Godzilla fan its an absolute wild time to be living in when one of his movies is so loved across the globe. Also loved that Ultimate showdown reference at 4:15 lol
I'm absolutely psyched to play BG3 but I can't help but wonder if ToTK got somewhat overlooked by the general population for "of the year" talk simply because it came out too early in the year.
I think it’s bc BOTW was already considered by many to be one of the greatest games ever made and a title that pushed the gaming medium forward. It was gonna be hard to do that twice with a sequel. BG3 was the new thing this year. I personally thought TOTK was the better game but I get why BG3 won
Some people can say the Oppenheimer is a prequel to goji -1 but even though I don’t agree too much, I can stand behind it and say it’s a pretty cool theory and it out be cool to see it be a different alternate universe wher they collab
"where they collab" brother, what? lmfao 😂😂 technically speaking Oppenheimer WAS a prequel to Godzilla, Oppenheimer was basically a documentary, Godzilla was the result of the events taken place in that documentary.
Glad to see some TOTK love. So many people wrote it off after the next game came out but i truly loved totk. BG3 deaerved GOTY but TOTK was amazing. And when i started to get a little tired, pikmin 4 came out, i played it, then came back to totk and finished loving it still. BoTW, I liked but not nearly as much as others. TOTK was amazing
Across the Spiderverse is the greatest animated tour de force I've ever seen. Definitely the standout movie for me this year. I very rarely go to theaters anymore, but my ass will in the seat for the sequel.
The animation was awesome and I loved the fan-service but holy shit the story is a total slog compared to the first one. The way it played out and ended really kind of pissed me off ngl.
Im so happy Godzilla was the one chosen. Im a massive Godzilla fan and I was so taken back by Minus One. I love the movies where Godzilla is just going around and wrecking shit and fighting crazy monsters, they're some of the most fun I have with movies, but this movie. Oh my god this movie changed that perspective so much and I fucking loved it. Like he said, the atomic breath in this one was so devastating. In the other Godzilla movies you're cheering when you see that blue beam come in, but in this movie, you feel this overwhelming sense of dread. What Minis One did for this franchise was amazing. It's so nice to have 2 sides of these movies, where one is a fun action movie to laugh and cheer with friends, and then you have this side of Godzilla. The side that shows how incredibly dark the movies and his impact on humanity can be.
The ending of WWII was AWFUL So am I the only one upset about how WWII ended? I mean they built Hitler up to be the big bad and just when he is about to face justice, he goes and kills himself. WTF was the point of him if FDR and Churchill were not going to fight him in an epic duel to save the world? And don't get me started on FDR! They just kill him half way through the war. Truman totally did not deserve to win the war, his character arc was not about war winning. And it certainly wasn't about destroying two cities with bullshit deus ex super weapons that came out of no where. And another thing that pissed me off is that in the last episode of the war we find out that Stalin was a bad guy the entire time! Where was this foreshadowed to us? WTF, absolute character assassination. He was all about freeing the oppressed and bringing about a new system that wasn't shackling the poor and they made him a dictator? That is bullshit! Anyways, WWII was cool but its end was absolutely trash and I would like you guys to sign a petition to have it rewritten.
Baldur's Miss is straight ass, spend the first 10 hours of the game missing all your attacks for a lukewarm storyline where you're being deceived the entire game and just roll with it and lose or roll against it and lose assuming, of course, that your save game isn't deleted completely randomly after logging off :) It really didn't deserve to be up there but this was a rough year for gaming altogether.
@@JafadesThere is the contrarian. we found them. Too be fair if you don't like CRPGs or D&D there is just a chance that it is just not your thing. and thats fine. Personally its one of my favorite games of the decade. Along with Divinity Original Sin II
As much as I adored TOTK's main narrative, I will admit that the game has a lot of "Psycho Mantis?!" moments in terms of repeated dialogue 😂but like MGS, the characters are charming enough for me to forgive that.
I’m not gonna lie, these opinions are really really respectable, and I’m sure Matt would agree with my favourite game of this year, Remnant 2. Is by no stretch a boundary breaker or innovative, but I loved remnant: from the ashes, and like tears of the kingdom, remnant 2 is just a massive improvement.
Tears of the Kingdom was the only game released this year that managed to make me cry. I laughed in the face of cannon deaths in starfield mainly because i imagined their ragdoll physics. Baulder's Gate wasn't my kind of game genre-wise. And I hate Geometry Dash so 2.2 wasn't even worth trying (which i did)
I believe everyone did for the most part, but what he is taking about is the repetitiveness, mainly in the dungeons. The dungeons are always: Ancient ancestor saying come, 5 locks, release the 5 locks, fight boss, get secret stone. For the most part the story was good, but it was repetitive.
BG3 has the best co-op of any game I've ever seen. I'm usually not a AAA game player since the only platform I usually play on is the switch, but my boyfriend convinced me to play with him, and it's been amazing. It's been so smooth and you can be doing two completely different side quests at the same time. It's really impressive.
I'll never play Baldur's Gate 3 but I voted for it just because its seemed like they earned it especially making the AAA game companies tremble saying to not expect that quality of them. Having a great multiplayer game with no in game purchases? Yeah they earned it in my book. So while I would think games like it are boring or just not for me I gave it my vote
For me id say my fave movie this year was fnaf, not really for the movie itself but for the experience of watching it in a cinema with my friends surrounded by people who were just as excited. Fave game for this year was Coral Island (i got bg3 for christmas and id put it there but seems unfair to everything else ive played this year). Its basically stardew valley but with a south east asian twist (i grew up in sea so it give alot of strong vibes for me)
Is Godzilla's 15 million dollar budget because of extensive planning and careful spending or is it because Japan overworks and underpays their effects people?
Agree with you on how incredible G Minus One is, but you should know that the film's director is also VFX supervisor who holds a key executive position at the studio that did all the VFX. That saved tremendous costs when it came to the CGI and scale. Hollywood still definitely needs to take notes with how they pulled off the entire production, but those key facts are worth noting.
I don’t care that it’s all in Japanese , it was actually so much more enjoyable with the language with the setting of the movie (Japan) and all of the suspense makes this my favourite movie 😀
Every once in a while, a game comes out that EVERYONE is playing. Everywhere you look there's clips, video essays, people are exchanging tips and strategies IRL and online, it just feels like everyone is on the same page and having a great time. Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the last one I remember because of the circumstances in the world at the time, but Tears of the Kingdom definitely hit that stride, and I'd even say Lethal Company came out of nowhere and did it too. We were eating good this year, gamers.
@@urbainleverrier1 Only Up was really just something streamers were playing that was popular to watch, it didn't have the grasp on the average person that the other games had. Every streamer was playing it, yeah, but outside of that it had no real entertainment value and it died off pretty quick.
I totally agree with everything Charlie said about how incredible the visuals of Godzilla Minus One are, ESPECIALLY with a $15M budget next to the usual $100M+ budgets. I really hope it doesn't turn out that anybody was overworked and/or underpaid while making the film.
Godzilla Minus One is a masterpiece in its own right. As Charlie stated, it transcends the giant monster/kaiju genre entirely, showing you don't need a big budget and another monster to keep people on the edge of their seat and feel genuinely emotional.
Todays fact of the day, Rhode Island was discovered in 1524 by Italian navigator Giovanni da Verrazano. The story is that he saw a similarity between this area and the Greek island of Rhodes. But the Dutch explorer Adriaen Block, there in 1635, named it Roodt Eylandt 'red island', for the color of its soil.
Honestly, even though it's the only game I played last year that was nominated, I have to argee with you Charile. Tears of the Kingdom was one of my favorites, and I felt like it deserved an award, even with last year's line up.
