I want a horror movie where the marketing team does everything they can to hide that it's a horror movie until release and then people go in and get traumatized
I remain resolute in my belief that the best horror movies do exactly that - not advertise themselves as horror movies. That's not to say they advertise a completely different tone or subject matter, mind you. They set the audience up for drama, they're honest about that. But they don't let on that it's "horror" drama until the audience is already in their seat and thoroughly invested. Think about Jurassic Park. It's a movie about dinosaurs being resurrected, the wonders of future technology! And half the movie involves characters being eaten alive, or nearly eaten, by rampaging dinosaurs. Characters being hunted, trapped, brutalized by these animals. We see very few of these deaths directly, but the implied violence is absolutely horrific. Jurassic Park is a horror movie, through and through.
Having your memory erased on purpose and then forgetting why you had your memory erased so you go and try to remember everything is actually a really hilarious premise
@@monowired But in Amnesia, Daniel did not go and try to remember everything. He went back into the castle to kill someone per instruction from his former self. Only then did he find clues along the way and remember, no?
the one with the evil woman was dope imo too... the second one...that creepy house... her possession of the dad... she reminded me of my grandmother when i was a kid...
Horror has come to a point where the true horror lies in being forced to see the movie in the first place. Edit: The amount of bots in Charlie’s comment section could probably make a better horror movie than whatever this is.
To play devil's advocate, I kind of like that the theme of this movie was about after you successfully make it through trauma, how do you move on from trauma. And the main idea is you can't just forget it ever happened, because if you do, you aren't mentally ready for when life inevitably brings struggles again. It's message is to not forget, to confront it and learn from it, and that you can get through it with someone (your family).
@@kingj6677probably just the angle. He showed the full room at one point. And theres a decentchunk of empty floor space behind the desk where the card cabinet is.
“Quality Blind” is the perfect way of describing why fifty shades and twilight remain more memorable to me than any other film series I’ve ever watched. Something about irredeemable garbage just hits different.
Both those two are also female gaze for young adults and teen/tweens respectively, which is pretty rare to see so I appreciate it for that. Never seen Twilight but watching Fifty Shades in my twenties even though it sucks still has an upside for me in watching a protagonist who I can relate too, pretty normal cute girl nothing too crazy no Mary Sue without personality who is a god just because no girl power for the sake of girl power etc. Just chillin and getting uhh roped
One of the biggest issues with this film was screen time for past characters. I believe specs and tucker deserved a little bit more instead of just appearing on a RU-vid clip. Carl should have been involved in helping josh gain back his memory (since he was the one that took it away from him) instead of renai just doing it on the couch Elise could have helped josh or dalton in the further and even face off against the red faced demon (which I believe had been teased throughout the series) And yeah i expected more screen time for the red faced demon as well.
I already watched the film on Netflix, and i was not engaged for the entire film and i think that it is not good and completely forget about it and move on.
I saw this movie in theatres with my boyfriend and his mom, who have both been fans of the franchise for a long time. Maybe it was just the energy of being in a theatre full of fans, but I liked it. I definitely think they were overly milking the franchise, but it’s not nearly as bad a case as others, like the Conjuring 3.
I agree in a full theatre it was worth the money at least. The last Conjuring movie that came out was doo doo! I would have been pissed if I paid for that. The red door had too many jump scares for sure but there was some good creepiness in the there. It’s a dumb/fun horror to watch on a Sunday night. There’s so much crap horror that a relatively ok horror movie nowadays is ridiculed like it’s the worst thing ever. Charlie’s too good for us now lol.
I think this one being direct sequel to 2nd movie is the final movie in this franchise, or at least the story of this family. I think they should make a new franchise or IP at this point.
I think this is why we're seeing studios like a24 rise in popularity. Less budgeted horrors, but producing entertaining and thought provoking horrors. We're past the age of cheap jump scares carrying 'scary movies'.
Theyre distributors and producers , they dont make the movies They just pay the people who can If the movie fails it doesnt matter cause they pay little money for movies with daring ideas If it succeeds then good , they just made good investment Theres reason why you dont hear about their bad movies like aderall diaries , slice or mojave.
Movies like Nope and Barbarian work because they are surprising but also different at the same time. It's not just jump scares, it's the atmosphere and the let-up to the scary moments that occur
Nope was disappointing.. Wasn't scary, thought it was more boring than scary. And just don't get the hype from it. And Barbarian was bizarrely cringy more than scary...
My favorite horror movies are when the threat is super unknown and intimidating. Part of why I like The Thing and Alien so much is because the survivors feel really competent and they do the most reasonable or logical things in their situations, but are simply unaware of just how outmatched they really are
Those series are definitely in my top 5. Sigourney weaver was my first crush as a kid. Add in the first 2 predator movies. For some reason those 3 series/sets of films take place in the same universe to me.
Making the characters competent actually makes the threat that much more intimidating. We see MacReedy systematically piece together how the Thing monsters behave, with the soldering iron blood test being a very clever idea for identification. In Alien, Ripley frequently makes intelligent decisions and once she takes command of the crew, the survivors actually listen to her orders. And Predator goes out of it's way to show that Arnold and his men are all badass soldiers, making their one by one deaths at the hands of the Predator midway through the film that much more significant. That's why these classic monster movies not only have their iconic monsters but also iconic heroes.
@@Maverick341534 so true! The one on one stand off on the tree a Even though we don't get to see it, the set up was so badass! Plus I ain't got time to bleed was a great line earlier when they were fighting in the compound
I actually loved the first one. I remember going into it thinking it was gonna be a boring, mainstream ghost movie, and actually being pretty blown away by it
Honestly surprised at how much Charlie disliked this one. It’s hardly the best horror ever & has its faults but I was surprised at how much I began to care about the father son dynamic & really enjoyed some of the execution. There’s worse ways to kill a couple of hours
yeah i think the problem is that horror people dont like it because its barely a horror movie and no one dies. its a pretty decent story of a father and son working through their problems together with a horror back drop. For me it really resonated as a story of a father and son finally breaking the addiction/abuse cycle.
@@saleplains that makes a lot of sense. I guess people will see it as good or bad depending on what kind of horror you’re going in for. Can’t say I went in expecting to be scared or disturbed, I just wanted some good character work and fun jumps every now and again which i’d say this delivered on
The last horror film to actually scare me was Hereditary, they nailed everything. The "blurry scary thing in the background" trope with the mother in the corner and in the attic, the shock horror of mutilation, the suspense chase.
@@thebloodmoonking8890it means your taste is more B horror jump scare type and not detailed slow burn tension horror films. I always wonder how and where tastes for things like movies start to develop. Quite interesting!
Horror as a film genre is just so damn fascinating to me because I agree, 90% of the time it's pure gargabe and about 5% of the time it's okay, but that last 5% of actually good horror films are genuinely some of the best films ever made, it's so strange
I’m middle aged and haven’t had a gaming system since Gameboy. Charlie’s one of my favorite RU-vidrs. Pretty much watch at least one of his clips every day and I don’t think I’ve seen any of his gaming-related content.
He mentioned the same with video games for about 5 seconds which considers it the title of gaming worthy, of course the best 5 seconds of game talk of all time almost, at least that day
I will forever say it The Conjuring is the most greatest horror movie of all time it didn’t just rely off jump scares the story was amazing and it had that weird uneasy feeling the whole movie
One time I watched insidious 2, which is technically the 3rd in terms of time progression, so the only thing that made sense was how much I liked the interior of the house the family lived in
I'm gonna need a horror movie where the demon or spirit straight up kills the first chance they get and the main characters actively need protection throughout the movie to not get bodied the first second. i hate when the entity just wastes time
I remember watching The Red Door earlier this month. When I saw the opening credits with all the drawings of past moments from the previous Insidious movies and saying "It's like they're trying to remind us of better movies." Like "Hey, remember this scary part from the first movie? I bet you wish you were watching that now, huh."
This movie wasn’t terrible for me cause three girls in the front got kicked out for being loud, and some country hick behind me jumped out of his seat to chase them, yelling “imma give you the whoopin yo daddy never gave you”
I use to do this thing where me and my cousin would sleep over and try finding the worst little budget horror movies and see how bad it is all night 😭😭
From a artistic and technical standpoint I feel that horror is the hardest genre to create a well rounded movie/series. It really depends on so much like social norms what we find scary as a culture and what we accept as something out of the ordinary or mundane. I bet you make a movie about a mass shooter 50 years ago and it would shock people to their core. Now it would be written off as gimmicky or in bad taste.
As a fan of horror, I genuinely liked this last insidious. There were jump scares that I was not prepared for. Considering I’m always prepared and can basically guess when they’re going to happen, there were parts of this movie that I could not guess how it was gonna go and that made it fun. I like that they brought back all the original characters. I genuinely liked the storyline of this movie…so I really can’t agree with anything this man said about this movie lol
The biggest jump scare to me is the title; red door. This has to be something socialist. A comedian who makes terrible jokes while dying who then comes back and continues to make terrible jokes is even scarier than socialism.
Seems like another real aspect of horrors getting worse is that we are desensitized to seeing a victim get slashed for the 40th time no matter how different the slash is
The only exemption I can think of is the Terrifier movies, especially the second. Super brutal, gory, a good time with friends. Most slashers are just awful recently, though.
@@RickyBobby-dz9jdits not being a sell out to do ads. He said it was an ad, he told you it was a sponsor and he never mentions it outside of the advert. Besides you probably couldn't even fathom how much money he got from that intense of a sponsorship. Gotta understand these big personalities got big bills to pay.
I really wish we got to see Lipstick-Face Demon more. They only showed him in like 5 scenes and each scene was 3 seconds of him doing a silly face and gesture just like the first movie had.
I remember seeing the ad campaigns in youtube trying to hype it up by having an irl red door and spooking people who open it. Even without knowing anything about the series I knew it was gonna be dead on arrival.
13:36 Ever since I learned that Tiny Tim was a respectable and nice person, I don't have it in me to think the songs he sang are creepy anymore (which I dont think i even thought they were creepy, just unusual??) the high notes are genuinely respectable and the talent is amazing.
@@I_couldnt_use_ram_as_my_handlehe used to make his fans put their phones in yonder bags before they came into his dressing room, we all know what that means.
@@DogmenHardcastleCan't seem to find any reliable sources with this information. The only "news" outlet I could find covering this was the National Enquirer, which is a joke of a tabloid rag mag. Edit: Okay, just verified that Victoria Mae Budinger _was_ 17 when they married, so that much is true. Yikes 😬. Still can't find anything about any other pedophilia/sa allegations though
The last horror movie I truly enjoyed was sinister. It did not have cheap jumpscares, the story kept you intrigued. What stood out to me the most tho is the fact the for most of the movie, the threat is barely seen, but the very few times it is barely seen, it gives you chills. What you don’t see is very powerful, and horror movies nowadays lack that.
@@EveTheRaviolo it really is, the vhs videos always send chills down my spine. I was like 11 when I came out. I still think there hasn’t been many other good horror movies since.
For those feeling burnt out on cliche/poorly acted horror movies…Bone Tomahawk (2015) also featuring Patrick Wilson is a great example of true horror and suspense that I wish had more praise
it genuinely sucks that Tiny Tim’s music is used for horror, I love his songs. he did what he loved and now it’s being twisted by garbage horror movies/games
The first two insidious films were decent. I don't even think his song was used in the third or fourth film. Keep in mind that this is Patrick Wilson's directorial debut so he's bound to make some mistakes.
To be honest, I think this has been happening for a long time now. Every paranormal activity after the second one, and that's being generous, had entered that territory. There's honestly only been a handful of American horror films in the last ten years that pass the smell check and only a couple of those were by all definitions, good. Horror lost its way a long time ago but, arguably at least in the West I don't know if there ever truly was a tried and true method for success in that regard. The standards by which what people found truly a horror experience varied wildly even back in the day and quite a few sharks were jumped after one movie or another found a new way to make things scary, spooky, or actually horrifying and too often their sequels lose all the good will and meaning behind what made them good.
I remember going to see one of the Insidious movies with a friend and her family, and we started laughing our asses off during this one scene and people were looking at us like we were the weird ones. I miss those times.
The art of horror and scaring people is becoming a lost art nowadays. I think a big thing that horror nowadays needs to rely less on cheap jump scares. They need to implement ways to overstimulate our senses and play with them to make us feel scared, feel unprepared for the scary. Make us feel like we are in the situation ourselves and full on creep and scare us this way, fancy camera movement and editing as well can help this but a good storyline as well can help make it make sense and keep the tension and the feeling of being on the edge while watching the movie. Just a shame that a lot of “scary” movies are just shock movies
@@starbucktargaryen473 the indie scene knows what’s up, the recent evil dead rise in my opinion was great to creep you out and make you feel uncomfortable and even scared whoever I do think moments of overstimulation would make it much more scary. I want to do a video about the current state of horror today and how it’s not even in the conversation when it comes to movies anymore besides discussing the classics
I'm a horror fanatic and I swear Charlies Intro sentence is exactly why Horror is the best genre. You either get quality movies like Alien or you get B tier trash like Wickerman. And then you have stuff like Color out of space which sits right between. Honestly no matter what gets released in the horror genre it's always gold. Either comedy or horror. Also Horror as a genre is a lot more creative and original imo. There is a lot of copy pasted trash but there is so much new fun and controversial stuff being used in artistic ways that make horror one of the most varied and special genre. Anyway off to watch Martyr have fun!
Martyrs? The 2008 one? It's been 2 hours so I hope I'm not spoiling anything. I feel like it was a ridiculous movie and not the scariest horror movie. Wasn't terrible but some movies really drag out the rough stuff and in this movie, it comes across like torture porn or something I just don't get. At a certain point, the shock wears off and they keep piling it on and I wanted the movie to move on out of boredom rather than disgust or fear or anything, it just got ridiculous. Except for that decent chunk of the movie, pretty good. Maybe I just prefer a different kind of horror, but at least people weren't lying when they said it was a rough movie. Won't be watching it again.
I’m mad the Insidious franchise just won’t acknowledge the cliffhanger that happened at the end of the second movie. We got prequels and other continuations instead of what did Elise see behind that girl 😭
I saw this in the cinema and honestly the crowd was so fun (screaming at the jumpscares and laughing when there were dumb scenes etc.) that I didn’t mind the quality of the movie at all
The original insidious came out when I was in 7th grade and remains the scariest movie I’ve ever seen. I can watch now without any real problems but sometimes I’m reminded of the two second dream scene where you see the demon in the corner pointing at the kid and I’m freaked out by dark corners for the next night or two
I saw this last night too and I actually enjoyed it, but mostly because I almost peed my pants at the first big jump scare - the theater had the sound up SO loud that the effects were more scary than the movie
It really wasn't that bad at all. I enjoyed it too. The jumpscares had me on the verge of a heart attack but other than that I thought it was a pretty sweet end to the series. I just wish that Specs and Tucker had more screen time :(
I’ve been excited for this movie for like over a year… I’ve always loved the insidious series since the first one came out. I loved the red door and my boyfriend was getting pissed eventually THATS how happy and excited I was. I was devastated when I saw the title and thumbnail lmao
I think I understand "quality blindness" perfectly, because I also get a kick out of cheap and terrible stuff. I love Dollar Tree toys, free games and movies, etc.
horror films make me lol in general, the first insidious where the red faced demon was in his home sewing with needle hands while through the window played in the background had me laughing for minutes😂
This is why I don’t like watching/reading movie reviews anymore. The movie wasn’t bad at all and yes it wasn’t great but it was better than a lot of other crap horror out there. It was a fun creepy ending to the franchise. If you’re interested in something than watch it for yourself. Charlie’s bagging on Insidious 5, like no shit it’s not gonna be a masterpiece. He’s becoming too godly for us all. Trust me there is way worse shit to be watching.
The highlight for me was when Josh's ex-wife tells him about the year that had been hypnotized away, Josh gets all indignant going "you kept this from me?" How in the world is that your question when you now know that not only do ghosts exist and you can communicate with the dead, but for your entire life you were stalked by a ghost that also appears in your childhood photos?
