How does Ixyil's chapter relate to the rest of the story? I can't see how Lei and Xhana's actions would cause a star to burn for ten years and then disappear.

The new 'star' they could see on the ground was really the retro burn the engines were making to slow down from 0.9c. The shot that the watcher took to elimonate the invaders made that new 'star' disapear in a flash.

@@Leapyean Maybe I'm just overthinking it but coming in a .9 c would make for a hell of a blueshift that would be impossible to miss. I would think that a seemingly brand new star closing in on them would kind of clue them in that it was not a star. Kind of like picking up the proverbial Bumblebee going mach 2 is not going to make one think "damn, that is a fast bee" you will think "Uh, oh. We got a stealth out there."

@@Snipergoat1 if you saw it crossing the sky then yes 0.9c would be the fastes star out there, but the story says it was a retro burn so from the ground it would just be a point source that slowly got brighter. They also said it was a long way away and would need to be as a deceleration burn for 10 years means it was on the breaks across 90 lightyears and was still a long way away. Yes it would be blue shifted, but as stars cycle through their life they get reder and no one has watched a star birth in real time they could start off very 'blue'. Remember "It is never aliens, until it is aliens."

@@Leapyean Blue-shifted is not just "looks blue". All the spectral lines are shifted towards the blue side. You would notice that as soon as you take a spectrum. You're telling us in 10 years, they didn't take one spectrum? No way.

For that matter, if they're looking at the engine, then I suspect the composition (and thus the lines) would be significantly different from a star.
