Excellent presentation. Simple, direct, to the point, nothing left to the imagination. Appreciated. I'm changing out a rotting garden gate and fence post. The older one was a sturdy 7ft wooden gate. We live in an area prone to gates trying to be kicked in, resulting in part of the damage to ours. Austerity means I am having to get creative. I purchased a Wickes untreated Chelsea arched slatted gate pack with 30 x 65mm braces I now have in assembly mode. I am buying more braces for the outer edges top to bottom and fixing it to an arched iron gate for added decorative support, although adding to weight might be a concern. I have the option to hang the wooden gate and let the metal gate be the back support unhinged, or hang the metal gate and let the wooden gate be it's fixed support unhinged. I'm thinking the iron gate would have better load bearing capability. Yet not sure if the two 65 x 40mm iron 'L' brackets that come with the kit are strong enough for the added weight. The brackets will be attached to Garage brick wall, rather than the narrow post the older gate is hinged from. Would you use sleeve anchors rather than masonry screws for such a job ? The opposite latch side of the gate will have a new post at the end of a side fence, the base of which is concrete slab. I'm going to fix a base support plate for the post to slot down into then attach the post to the end of the fence line. I'm not sure what's going on under the slab so would sleeved anchors or masonry screws for that part too. Slabs being a couple of inches thick probably. There is no movement in the slabs. Any suggestions appreciated. :-)

Moosie, get a 4-inch hand grinder, use a thin abrasive metal cutting blade and with it you should be able to cut any metal flush to the cement. Use several drill sizes to drill the anchor out of the hole and reuse it if possible. I use Rockite Anchoring cement to install an anchor in a hole that is oversized for my anchor.

Hello, thanks for uploading. What would you suggest for attaching a shade sail or shade tarp to a brick wall, the non-structural brick used as cladding in modern construction. Thanks!
@MrHardware1
@MrHardware1 7 лет назад
If you think the brick is too fragile to handle the load, which could be great if it is a large sail. You could come if 5" in from the corner, there should be wood there, and get 6" x 5/16 lag bolts and attach a 2 x 4 to the wall. Then you could use a big screw-eye to attach the sail line.

Hi & great video. I need to hang a few heavy items & put up some shelves in my garage, the only thing is the blocks are hollow, what would suggest?
@MrHardware1
@MrHardware1 8 месяцев назад
I would start with 5/16 x 2 1/4“ sleeve anchors. As you tighten them up if you’re in a hollow or a weak spot the threaded center section will come out to far and you will know it didn’t get a good grab. Then you could move to the right a couple inches and try again. if you can’t move the bracket, then you can put a toggle bolt into the hollow of the block and put a machine screw in the toggle.

Thank you for this video. I am pouring an 8 in footer to insert an eyebolt used to support a listing tree. Is there an insert I can put into the wet concrete footer which I can screw an eyebolt into?
@MrHardware1
@MrHardware1 2 года назад
You can use a rod coupler w/a ‘L’ foundation bolt screwed in half way (or an eye bolt) to anchor the coupling into the cement. Then you can screw an eyebolt into the coupling. I would use an earth anchor instead of the cement, they come in various sizes to achieve greater loads, easy to screw into the ground and removable.

Mr. Hardware, how would you hang a Ledger Board for a deck on a concrete cinder-block foundation? I have seen everything from using plain sleeve anchors to filling the concrete blocks to using an epoxy anchor (which I assume is epoxy filled holes with the anchor bolts as well)
@MrHardware1
@MrHardware1 5 лет назад
Years ago I used 1/2 x 6" sleeve anchors to attach a 2 x 12 to the back of my old store when I put an addition on it. I started w/2 at the edge, then altered top and bottom of the 2 x 12 every 12" until I got to the end where I finished w/ 2 anchors. It was an old building I was adding to so some of the block was soft so a few of the sleeve anchors tightened too far, so I added another anchor nearby to make up for a questionable anchor. It is one advantage of sleeve anchors that if they tighten more than an inch they might not be very strong.

Thanks! Would you have a recommendation for securing a metal door jamb in cinder block for maximum strength/security (renovation). The block is hollow, about 3/4" or 1" I suppose, with no solid sections because the block is edge on, surrounding the jamb. Ideal would be to fill the concrete block, which may happen later, but it's 20 degrees out now and concrete will freeze. So it's tricky because there's only the thickness of the cinder block to work with. I'm thinking maybe using the shortest expansion anchor. Thanks!
@blairgilbert7606
@blairgilbert7606 8 лет назад
+nextari I would use tapcon screws with Franklins Construction adhesive. Once the construction adhesive is cured the door jamb should be solid. Use more screws for more strength, and more glue if needed.

hello, you said that the bracket(or any object) can be removed from a drive pin anchor again and again by unscrewing the nut. My question is can we do the same with a sleeve anchor?

the problem with a sleeve anchor is the stem, which has the threads, can come loose and will need to be tightened so you can attach anything to it.

Is your apt wall plaster or drywall or cement? Drywall and plaster I would suggest finding the studs and using lag bolts, no anchors required. If it is cement the lead lag shields and lag bolts are great.

Hello Mr. Hardware, do you recommend using sleeve anchors in hollow brick walls? if not, what is a good alternative?
@MrHardware1
@MrHardware1 5 лет назад
When I use sleeve anchors in a semi-solid wall I keep an eye on how long the center bolt pulls out of the anchor. If it only comes out 1/2" or so I'm good. If it comes out 1", no good. Then I use lag shields and lag bolts. Blair

Thanks pal. Im trying to put a speed bag platform into brick wall. It has Two 11 gauge steel mounts. They gave four 3 inch lag bolts so i matched up for the Lag bolts to these anchors called Titen anchors.... the brick hasn't been holding up well. I pre drill an usually 1 bolt fucks me an i gotta start from scratch. I got it once but from the vibrations knocked 1 bolt out. Very frustrated just want my hobby back
@MrHardware1
@MrHardware1 5 лет назад
I bet lag shields will solve your problem, plus you'll be able to use the old holes. A 3/8 lag bolt requires a 5/8 hole for the proper lag shield. Dont use cement screws on something that takes abuse. A plastic or lead anchor will absorb the vibration.

@MrHardware1
@MrHardware1 6 лет назад
A single paver is only as good as how it is locked down. Usually I can wiggle a paver out of my deck with out too much trouble, so one paver is not much attachment to the earth in a wind storm. I would remove the paver, get a 30" earth anchor, (go to mrhardware.com and click on the Giant Catalog and search this number, 6159776. That should hold the gazebo in a wind storm. Not one brick.

What good is the type of anchor used at 1:15? How would you mount anything onto a nut that’s sitting up against a concrete wall? What use is a nut against a concrete wall? How would you make use of a sleeve anchor inside the concrete when there is nothing but a solitary nut sitting outside the concrete wall to fasten to? How are you going to mount anything onto a sole nut sticking outside some concrete? I can’t mount a kitchen cabinet using that nut. What good is the nut sitting there if I can’t fasten anything to the nut in order to hang something on the wall? Shouldn’t there be a much longer and thicker screw protruding from the anchor so you can actually use the anchor to hang things onto?
@MrHardware1
@MrHardware1 2 года назад
The nut is on the outside of whatever you’re hanging. Whether it’s a metal plate to a driveway, or holding a cabinet to the wall, you’d be using this anchor through everything to be attached and yes the nut is exposed, but in a lot of commercial applications it works fine.

The anchor and the corresponding bolts are sized according to the project I’m trying to hang. I have made a hole in a block wall where it was only 3/4 of an inch thick which isn’t very much to purchase no matter what kind of anchor you have so I went higher to the mortar joint where I got a better hole and better purchase for my anchor. The anchor can be too long and be into the hollow , however there better be enough wall that the anchor is grabbing to do your job.
