Watched Godzilla just last week at the cinema, and I'm so so glad I made the time. I loved it, my 11 year old neice loved it, my 75 year old dad loved it. It goes to show that good stories translate fantastically across cultures. The bloat of hollywood is suffocating blockbuster movies. These days, I'd take a mid-budget passion project every time.
Godzilla Minus One, and Boy and the Heron, would definitely be on my list of top movies of the year, and I'm glad I went to see them in the theater (they were the only ones I saw in the theater this year). I need to go back to the beginning of the year though and see what else would be on my list. Will have to check out some of the ones you mention that I haven't seen!
Iron Claw got me so much American history wrestling it's deep. I'm English I got into WWF late 80s early 90s then dropped off with the Rock and Stone Cold. Never knew Texas Tornado had a false foot 😮😮😮
I'd have to think about numbers 2 through 5, but Godzilla Minus One easily tops my list for this year. Probably my favorite of any of the Godzilla movies, and just a great experience overall. Even my wife loved it, and she's just a Godzilla fan because of me. I've seen it 3 times in the theater, and if I can't get to it one more time before it leaves I'm hoping they come out with a great 4K disc release of it as I'll preorder it day one. In no particular order my other contenders would probably be Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, John Wick Chapter 4, Sisu, and Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse. Haven't really seen much this year since our local theater closed down. Still haven't seen Oppenheimer yet, so I might do a blind buy on a physical for that one.
I think Talk to Me was definitely better than their pick of Wick 4. Wick 4 was just a series of tedious chases and fight scenes with no emotional impact. Talk To Me was filmed with a budget probably less than Wick 4’s catering budget. I would also add indy Sci-Fi film No One Will Save You.
10:54 “Now, one thing I want you to notice about my honorable mentions, I want you to notice one thing: not one superhero movie, not one superhero film.” “Sisu” is a superhero movie. It’s just not marketed that way.
Oppenheimer is my #1 for sure, Holdovers #2 and the only two movies this year I loved, but haven't seen Godzilla, Boy and the Heron, Napoleon, Zone of Interest, Ferrari, or Iron Claw yet.
Interesting, i was on the fence about seeing Iron Claw, maybe ill try and catch it in the next few weeks, assuming it doesn't leave the theaters as things come and go so damn quick these days.
I now do a list of from the current year or first time watches. Make the year suck less. Oppenheimer (2023) Godzilla Minus One (2023) Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022) Last Train from Gun Hill (1959) Videodrome (1983) Mad God (2021) High Plains Drifter (1973) Double Indemnity (1944) Shin Kamen Rider (2023) Renfield (2023)
Guys, what is the best way to see movies when they’re nowhere within 100 miles of you? I’ve been wanting to see American Fiction for at least six months, but even with it being in wide release (lies) it will likely never be shown in my area, although I live less than two miles from a movie theater.
Chris is right, Godzilla Minus One is not only a good monster movie, it is genuinely great art. The script is near perfect, and the acting and directing are top notch. You are so drawn in to the story and the characters, I haven't experienced something like this in a movie for years and years! I got so invested, I teared up several times during the movie, totally in surprise. This is by far the best movie of 2023, and dare I say, of the past decade.
My top five of the year are: 5) Miss Shetty Mr Polishetty 4) Super Mario Bros 3) Maaveeran 2) Hi Nanna 1) Godzilla Minus One Honorable mentions: The Creator, Past Lives, Shin Kamen Rider, Equalizer 3, and Gran Turismo. For viewings, the Indian movies I've only seen twice each because they only play for a week before the theater rotates them out. Super Mario Bros 7 times in the theater (own the 4K), Godzilla Minus One 8 times currently.
Ok so Godzilla Minus One is not playing in my city I guess we’re too good for subtitles so I have to drive an hour away to see it, and I’ve really biged it up, I told my family that you guys said it was really really good so they are coming too. …I’m going to be so mad 😂 if this is not the best movie of the year. But hey low bar. I’ll let you know how it goes!
need to watch most of those movies. For me to be honest struggled to list a top 5 as really the bar was so low this year and missed alot of movies this year...Will defo watch botg your top 5 recommends At a push probably they are... 5. Why did Alan have to spoilt it with his smart a$$ remark? Alan, please look for things we ( i.e. people from different backgrounds) who love movies have in common and resist denigrating people’s competence on the basis of their immutable characteristics. I realise you probably meant it as a joke but I’m tired of the constant emphasis on race.
JW4 was too much. JW has always been over the top but this one went way beyond the top. The stair scene was ridiculous. Cartoonish. I like the other 3 but 4 didn’t do it for me.
